It was the first high school in the Glendale district and it succeeded the one-room school in the back room of a small frame building. Since 1912 the GHS campus has grown to its present day proportions. During the past fifty years the voices of many different students and teachers have echoed through the halls of Glen- dale High. This summer, after fifty years of service, the old walls of the main building will be torn down. The face of the campus has been changed by the erection of new buildings. Glendale High students have come . . . and gone . . . taking with them the fruits of knowledge so carefully bestowed up- on them by the most worthy Glendale High School faculty. Each student who passes through the front door of Glen- dale High School into his future takes with him very special memories . . . memories the 1962 Cardinal staff has endeavored to capture in this edition of your yearbook. x np 'r , Wr- yw ec -. Hall, Mr. Pat Taylor, Mr. Arthur Sine, Clerk, Dr. Joseph P. Voorhees, President, and standing, Mr. Don Sanderson who took Mr. Tayl0r's place on the board in January. THE STUDENTS and staff of Glendale High School can take justifiable pride in the fine traditions that have been established and maintained during the half-century of Glen- dale High,s existence. During this period the facilities and curriculum have been greatly expanded to provide for increased enroll- ments and the diverse educational needs of students. Standards of scholarship and citizen- ship have remained high. The success of Glen- dale High graduates in professional and busi- ness fields reflects the effectiveness of their schooling. The continued cooperative efforts of students, parents, and the staff will help to ensure years of success in the future. MR. MELVIN ZINSER District Superintendent THIS PUBLICATION of the 1962 Cardinal Yearbook marks the fiftieth anniversary of the foundation of Glendale High School. This year also marks a milestone in the history of Glendale High School in that the last remnant of the original school will be replaced with a new structure. We hope that this new structure will uwitnessw and symbolize for the next fifty years the growth, loyalty, and learning that the "old School witnessedi' and symbolized for the first half century. MR. WE SENIORS, Clendale's contribution to the world,s knowledge, can remember the time, in the dim remote past. when we Walked . . . or ran . .'. humbly through the halls . . . bewildered by the maze of rooms . . . awed by the towering upperclassmen, and trying to dodge same, Then, suddenly we were sophomores, no longer cowering first-year students. We were seasoned veterans of academic achievement. We had advanced far enough to shoulder some responsibilities, so we elected four of our best as class officers. Many projects followed . . .collections for the Valley of the Sun School.. . the Sophomore Sock Hop . . . burning the midnight oil completing our themes for geography, and another year passed into oblivion. Then came summer vacation, two months of freedom which passed too quickly. We became upperclassmen, although juniors, and we busily engaged ourselves with earning money for the Junior-Senior Prom . . . passing history . . . heckling the freshmen . . . and working in the concession stand. We all began to Wonder what we planned to do senior year and after. And then we didnlt have to wonder any longer, because it was here. The mails became crammed as seniors sent for and received college catalogs, made choices and filed applications. The midnight oil began to burn again as we studied for college boards and entrance exams. But there are still the things they do to keep the animals quiet . . . Senior Day at the colleges . . . senior class dances . . . the Christmas and Sweetheart Formals . . . the Prom . . . Ditch Day . . . the all night party . . . and then it's over. We practice for Baccalaureate and Commencement . . . receive our diplomas . . and off into the world we go. AVE, GLENDALIA, MORITURI TE SALUTAMUS!! 26 GUADALUPE N. Old enough to go to the Prom . . . young enough to have no worries about college fwell, almost nonej. But there was a lot of work to do this year. History and the term paper . . . completing college entrance requirements . . . earning money for the Junior-Senior Prom . . . taking ITED tests that left us feeling wrung out . . . clubs . . . athletics . . . homework . . . Homework . . . HOMEWORK! I I For some there was anxiety as ,various honor clubs and citizenas organizations made choices on who was to be accepted this year. There was Boys' State, Girls' State, and Anytown to try for, and always there was the ambition to improve our class standing. And sometimes you sit back and dream of being a senior . . . having the privilege of looking on while someone else organizes the Prom. But don't concentrate on it too much, class, because before we know it, we will be seniors . . . and the junior year is too good to miss. 56 Linda Adams Gordon Allen Nancy Allen Joe Alvarez John Anderson Ken Anderson Marie Anfinson Bob Archuleta Margaret Arnold Jackie Athey Toni Atmore Margaret Aviles Fred Babcock Ed Baboa Lynda Bailey Betty Ballesteroz Don Banke Dewain Barber Steve Barnard Ginger Barry Juniors 5 M.. klir . 3.31. . . rg QR P 5 h X h. .A S 1, h F S , K SKK. FRESHMAN! To the upperclassmen a title filled with memories. It is a year filled with wonder . . . ul wonder where my next class isw . . . "I wonder how they expect us to get this homework donew . . . But then, the wondering fand wanderingi ceases and you get into the swing of things. You learn new cheers and shout your throat raw at the pep rallies and ball games. Comes Thanksgiving . . . and Home- coming . . . and everybody tries to out do each other making floats to welcome the old grads. The boys get their first taste of a formal . 4 . either at the Christmas Formal or the Sweetheart Dance . . . depending upon how bold they are. Semester exams and you wonder again . . . 'LHow did those seniors ever last so long?" But inevitably the frosh rally and make it through the worst forms of brain-washing that the teachers can devise. Then it's downhill, and we prepare to be SOPHOMORES. 84 Jay Abrams Cindy Adams Paul Aguilar Ray Alcaraz Michael Alford Dianne Allen Larry Allred Cirilo Almanza Frances Anaya Jim Anderson Linda Anderson Nancy Anderson Simon Anderson Judy Angotti Margie Aragon Nays .1g X - "fc J, 1 4-'is " 'f -1-fr S-, K X Q ' is ,Q IU' 'e lgfx ei Lt Ig t , K i if ff, . if TV t. . x . ,- 41- . Although our cindermen weren't the best ,as a team this year, prospects look pretty fair for the coming season. David Storm shows ,em how. THE 1961-62 basket team had little to no experience when the season started. Only Dave Storm and Charles Elliott had varsity experience. Vern Cantrell, senior captain, became the outstanding player as the season progressed. THE SEASON'S record of 7 wins-13 losses, was no indication of the great improvement made through- out the season. In the season's finale, the starting lineup consisted of one senior, three juniors and one sophomore. GHS will have seven hoopster lettermen returning next year. I62 Glendale ,,,.,,,,...,,.,.....
