The purpose of the program is to assist stu- dents in gaining and develop- ing leadership skills which can be used later in life, explained Miss .Ian Fuller, PE leader su- pervisor. In the spring, senior leaders had the opportunity to use their skills at Winkelman Ele- mentary School. For six weeks they assist-instructed students in grades kindergarten through sixth during their gym classes. Fuller commented, Two springs ago we had our pilot project with four specially se- lected students. The staff and students were very impressed with the program and the stu- dents from GBSY, Other than spring teaching, the senior leaders put on an an- nual Christmas breakfast for the PE staff. The program has been very beneficial to students. They have developed positive atti- tudes towards this as they learn a lot about themselves and oth- ersf' concluded Fuller. A new dimension was added to boys' cross country. This new dimension was freshmen cross country cheerleaders. Mr. Hector Carabez, the freshman B squad cheer- leaders' sponsor, explained, The A squad cheered at A football games and soccer, and the B squad had only B football to cheer at. Mr. Pasquini, boys' cross country coach, men- tioned that he would appreci- ate cheerleaders and we, Mr. Smith and I, wanted to give girls more events. The 16-girl squad proved successful on both accounts. The response I got from the girls was very positive, and the reaction I got from Mr. Pas- quini was that the cheerleaders really helped them, comment- ed Carabez. Under the direction of a co- presidency, Terese Sullivan and Danielle Theriault, the Girls' Letter Club was formed to give female athletes the op- portunity to support each oth- er. This happened in several ways, first, the girls attended each others' games, tourna- ments, etc., and second, they organized special activities in- volving the whole school, or just the girls in the club. Two of the club's major ac- tivities were the Christmas stocking sale and the Turna- bout dance. The Letter Club also featured the most valuable athletes from each girls' sport on a bulletin board in the lock- er room area. The group this year, due to leadership and all of the offi- cers, was enthusied and willing to take responsibilities, com- mented Fuller, who also spon- sored the Letter Club. l CROSS COUNTRY CHEER- LEADERS-ROW l: Tani Roper, Kristi Loehrer, Ann Johnson, Lisa Silvermang ROW 2: Caryn Ziperstein, Kelli Moll, Vickie VanZant, Katie Andrews, Val Bianchi, Sue Shim, Mr. Hector Carabez-tSponsorJg ROW 3: Amy Anderson, Lisa Carlson, Julie Popiolek, Stacie Abraham, Sandy Ashcroft, Alisse Mawrence, Niki Koutsoukos.
