Bigger squads increase support Because of all the new girls tn Maine North and the ju- r highs, the cheerleading ads enlarged somewhat. . David Smith, director of :lent activities, decided to iw more girls to participate spirit boosting, so this was reason for increasing in nber. Having the chance to have 1 squads permitted us to er for other sports that nev- . ser Carolyn Glass and Booster v members put some extra Titan it into the Homecoming parade. er have cheerleaders,-like boys' and girls' cross country, and girls' volleyball. Since this was new to the cheerleaders, they enjoyed themselves much and had a good fall and winter sea- son, according to Mr. Hector Carabez, sponsor. Since so many freshmen tried out, it was impossible to choose only 25 girls, therefore, two squads had to be developed in order to accommodate all the girls. I enjoy being a cheerleader, the bigger squads make it even more fun to be on, comment- 4, , gf, , i Q ' 'S , , 5 wir,',.a,w. 1'-aw i,-'Q , 'it ed freshman Alisse Mawrence. Also contributing to spirit raising were Boosters and Pep Club. Prior to this year, spon- sor Mama Glass changed the i'Boosters to the Pep Club because she felt it fit the group better. Now that the number of students wanting to partici- pate in the club has increased, we now have a Boosters and a Pep Club, according to Glass. These groups usually came to- gether during athletic events but did appear occasionally at social gatherings. Students Assist Wrestlers, Swimmers The matmaids were a group of four girls who assisted at home wrestling meets. The girls' main jobs were to time the matches and keep scores. Peggy O'Hara, one of the sen- iors in the club commented, lt's very exciting to keep score, because the points are usually so close. The Glenbrook South Tim- ers' main function was to help run the swim meets. The club was mainly made up of stu- dents who had participated on the swim teams. Besides timing the swimmers, the club also filled in the Scorecards and ad- ded up the total number of points for the divers. The GBS timers were sponsored by Mr. Bill Stetson, who also coached the boys, and girls' varsity swim teams. Every Saturday morning a group of students helped in- struct public swimming classes. These students were the Glen- brook South Guards. The club was comprised of about 75 to 80 boys and girls from the Sophomore, Junior, and Senior Classes. The club members were students who have been involved in the swimming orga- nizations at GBS and liked to teach swimming skills at differ- ent levels. Mr. Bill Stetson was the sponsor.
