Tough act to follow adds extra incentive for debaters For many years the Glen- brook South debate team has been ranked as one of the best in the country. The team at- tempted to carry out this tradi- tion following the example of Mark Koulogeorge and Jeff Wortman, in the National Fo- rensic League Debate Cham- pionship in June of 1981, where the team took the na- tional championship. The top varsity team for the 1981-82 year, composed of Matt Pritsker and Scott Durchslag, participated, along During debate class, Scott Durchslag practices his speech on implementing desegregation in schools. ---.....,,,, with the rest of the debate team, in such prestigous events, as the Harvard, Red- lands, Emory, and Georgetown tournaments. The debaters considered their invitations to these tournaments to be a great honor, since only the highest ranked teams compete. As debator Matt Whipple said, Just to be asked to come to certain tournaments is con- sidered an honor. At the Georgetown invitational only twelve teams from across the country were invitedli' The Debate and Forensics teams were of roughly 35 mem- bers. Head coach Mr. Ted Belch described the team as, HA young and inexperienced team on the national level, but they have worked hard and done extremely well. We have good prospects for the state championship on the novice, JV, and varsity levelsf' The Cinema Club not only showed movies, according to Mr. Bill Utley, sponsor of the group. We're a group of twen- ty people who meet every Wednesday and go on field trips to various film festivals and conferences. This year marked Utley's sixth year as head of the Cine- ma Club. The club sponsored such films as For Your Eyes Only 9 to S , Breaker Mor- ant , and Time Bandits. The Oracle was produced 15 times during the year, and Calliope came out in December and May, Both publications gave stu- dents opportunities to get their literary work published. Last year, the Oracle won the George H. Gallup award, an award given to a select few high school newspapers nation- ally for journalistic excellence. 62 Cal mpc Ji: Oracle Therefore, the staff had a tough act to follow. I knew that we had most of our good reporters returning this year, stated editor-in- chief Scott Bloom, so this year, we decided to stress good layout design for a cleaner, more readable paper. Four of the editors went to a convention in Kansas City in the fall, and three of them, Bloom, David Roth and Adam Freedman, placed in various competitions there. 'These awards are richly de- served because they were hard earnedf' explained journalism adviser Mr. Ted Heiser. These students, as well as oth- ers involved in the publications programs, have always strived to do the best job they could. Calliope, on the other hand, published student-produced literature and art in its bian- nual issues. During its meet- ings the staff discussed and evaluated any artistic material voluntarily submitted by stu- dents. Calliope met not only as an extracurricular activity but also as a class, so all interei students could participate. J student staff made all editc decisions. ' ln recent years Calliope featured many award-wini poems and drawings. Acco ing to Mr. David Mull sponsor, We always try publish the best material we ceive, regardless of class other factors.
