lubs offer students academic challenges Three clubs had academic focuses. The Science Club had speakers and field trips relating to various aspects of science, the tutors tutored underprivi- leged children in Chicago, and the Math Club held math con- tests. The Science Club met peri- odically on Thursdays after school. They had speakers on such things as owls, snakes, and China's technology. They also made use of local places, like the Glenview Animal Hos- pital and the Glenview Naval Air Base. We do anything that is interesting and science related, explained vice-presi- dent Alison Van Egeren. The Uptown Tutoring Pro- ject involved busing GBS stu- dents to Onward House, a set- tlement house in Chicago. The high school students would each tutor one child in first, second, or third grade in read- ing, math and other basic ac- tivities. On special occasions, the tutors brought their stu- dents small gifts. South collect- ed over 13,000 cans of food for Onward House during the Christmas season, and in the spring, the tutors had a walk-a- thon, with the proceeds going to Onward House. The Math Club sponsored 10 after-school national math contests. Top participants went to regional finals at Lake For- est College on March 27. The results there decided whether or not South would complete in state finals, but at the time of publication, the contest had not been held.
