Members of both societies from the Class of '82 were initiated in March of the previous school year and became the '81-'82 group members. To be in Cum Laude, stu- dents must have attained at least a 4.3 academic grade point average at the end of five semesters. While NHS also re- quired academic qualifica- tions, participation in extra- curricular activities was also a factor. This year's NHS group was the first to have been inducted un- der these qualifications. This system makes students meet a set standard. Before we made this system, students had to compete against their class- mates to get in, explained Mr. David Smith, who is partly re- sponsible for coordinating NHS, Now students in NHS are more well-rounded. Senior Janet Lucas, a 1982 NHS initiate, felt 'alt means that you worked a little harder than necessarry. lt's not really an honor society, it's an activ- ity society because it's pretty easy to make the 3.0 require- mentf' Another honorary society open only to yearbook and newspaper staff members, Quill 8: Scroll, recognized those who contributed superior journalism work to their re- spective staffs. The society did not really come together as a group until March, when Quill 8L Scroll's main activity, planning the an- nual publications banquet, be- gan. Otherwise members ofthe honorary were pretty much im- mersed throughout the rest of the year in the actual work in- volved to put out their own publications. It's an honor to be recog- nized for your writing, said Kristy Ashleman, and Oracle staff member in Quill 8L Scroll, My writing is important to me because l'd like to pursue a ca- reer in writing someday. lubs offer students academic challenges Three clubs had academic focuses. The Science Club had speakers and field trips relating to various aspects of science, the tutors tutored underprivi- leged children in Chicago, and the Math Club held math con- tests. The Science Club met peri- odically on Thursdays after school. They had speakers on such things as owls, snakes, and China's technology. They also made use of local places, like the Glenview Animal Hos- pital and the Glenview Naval Air Base. We do anything that is interesting and science related, explained vice-presi- dent Alison Van Egeren. The Uptown Tutoring Pro- ject involved busing GBS stu- dents to Onward House, a set- tlement house in Chicago. The high school students would each tutor one child in first, second, or third grade in read- ing, math and other basic ac- tivities. On special occasions, the tutors brought their stu- dents small gifts. South collect- ed over 13,000 cans of food for Onward House during the Christmas season, and in the spring, the tutors had a walk-a- thon, with the proceeds going to Onward House. The Math Club sponsored 10 after-school national math contests. Top participants went to regional finals at Lake For- est College on March 27. The results there decided whether or not South would complete in state finals, but at the time of publication, the contest had not been held. In 1981 South finished first in regionals and sixth in state. ,l SCIENCE CLUB-ROW 1: John Ton- kin, Heidi Appel, Rachel Graber, Doug McCarthy, Roscoe Rush, Andre Pavkovicg ROW 2: Alison Van Egeren, John Szillat, Bob Reddy, Howard Haas, Steve Cousins, Lauren Swain, Louis Pappamihiel, Francine Paradise, Tom Gronau, Sanjay Lo- gani, Jeff Kim. 58 Ma h Club, Science Club, Tutors YT I I l Z MATHLETES-ROW l: Deanna Silver, Chuck Goodsite, Jim Ertmann, B' Baum, Brett Barksdale, Mike Ziegler, Row 2: Mike Dy, Rachel Graber, Ki Reczek, Susan Siegel, Jeff Herbert, John Shannon, Kevin O'Neil, Sanjay l ganig ROW 3: Wendy Percy, Heidi Appel, Karin Stimmler, Lori Margolis, A Brennan, ROW 4: Kevin Demaret, Ira Brenner, Darryl Wilson, Steve Cousi Doug McCarthy, Peggy Fletcher, Daphna Steier, Brian Nadigg Row S: Da' Juhl, Andre Pavkovic, Tim Thoelecke, John Spehlmann, David Hanson. i
