Receiving instructions from her supervisor, Barb Robinson learns to operate a l f'It's a lot more than just fundraising' Basic Four computer as part of her DCE job at MDA Scientific Laboratories. f American Field Service, to most people, meant traveling from country to country, state to state, or city to city. But to AFS students, it was a way to learn different lifestyles and customs around the world. When I was an exchange student in Argentina this sum- mer, I learned the lifestyles of a much poorer country than the U.S., and I also learned to judge people not by their face, but by what their personality was, commented Marie Wik- strom, co-president of AFS. Daphna Steier also acted as co- president. AFS provided a way for stu- dents from different countries to experience school at Glen- 54 AFS DCE, WGBS brook South. But in order to do this, they had to raise money to support this activity. They held two candy sales, which earned them approximately S1,500, and several bake sales in addi- tion. But it's more than just fun- draising. The main purpose of AFS is to promote the cultural exchange of ideas and customs and to teach high school stu- dents from other countries to understand each other and to work together,'i said junior Lori Holst. DCE, Diversified Cooperat- ive Education, helped students learn about the employment in- dustry and oriented them as to what the different jobs have to offer. With approximately 100 stu- dents, the DCE program helped students acquire jobs in fields of dentistry, computer programming, drafting, print- ing, restaurant hostessing, and many other areas. In 15 years' time, many bu- sinesses have learned about our program and have sent letters requesting part time help, ex- plained Dr. John Reimer, coor- dinator of the program. Another organization that aided the student body was WGBS, South's radio station. The club broadcast informa- tion, such as the Daily Bulle- tin, as well as music in the mornings, during lunch mods, and after school. For the fi time, the club was able broadcast from the Stud: Activities Office with the ass tance of a 100-watt speaker each cafeteria, a tuner, turn ble, cassette, equalizer, and power amp. Not only c WGBS aid students and fac ty, but it also provided bros casting experience to cl members. UI plan to be a diskjockeyl adio broadcaster in college a hopefully as a career, and l ing on WGBS has given me 4 perience in this field, co mented senior Joe Vagh president of WGBS.
