Commies, econom on minds of Americans A martial law crackdown in Poland, an Air Florida plane crash in Washington D.C., and a neverending battle with a stubborn economy highlighted events of the past school year. For the last couple of years, the labor union Solidarity had forced the Polish government into what seemed to be a con- tinuous string of concessions. Finally, the government tired of making concessions and as- serted its will on the people by arresting most of the leaders of the movement. The United States exper- ienced one of its worst air trag- edies ever when an Air Florida Boeing 737 crashed into a Po- tomac River bridge during an ice storm. Over 70 people were killed, High unemployment and terest rates combined to make President Reagan's recovery program less than a resounding success. Sports winners of 1981-82 were the San Francisco 49ers Los Angeles Dodgers, the Chi- cago Sting, the Clemson Ti- gers, John McEnroe, and Su- gar Ray Leonard. Among the deaths which had an impact on the masses were those of Anwar Sadat, John Belushi, William Holden, and Natalie Wood. On the local scene, a GBS junior, Adam Freedman, won a seat on the Northfield Town- ship board of school trustees. Because he was 16, and state law forbids minors from hold- ing office, he was replaced on the board by his father.
