Video activities rule Games, TV dominate recreation It was a video year, subscrip- tion and cable TV, and video games were issues of the times. Both subscription and cable TV were private television sys- tems. With cable TV, the pic- ture was transmitted through underground cables to form a clearer, more stable image. There were a number of com- mercial cable TV companies such as Home Box Office CHBOJ, in addition to private companies like Cablenet, a Canadian based company that negotiated a contract with Glenview and a number of oth- er North Shore communities for a cable network. Video games became a pas- time in homes and game rooms alike. According to Mr. Larry Horwitz, assistant manager of The Name is Games, a local game room, the most popular game was Pac-man, in which a round pac-man was to eat as many dots, blobs and fruits as he could. In fact, it was so popular nationwide that a song, Pac- man Fever was written. Also popular were De- fender, Centipede, and Tem- pest. The Village of Glenview, however did not want to have to deal with the problems that are sometimes involved with game rooms, so an ordinance was passed in January. It stat- llilllli- Computer enthusiasts gather in the new Apple computer lab after school to play video games, one of the com- puters' many functions. 246fCable TV 8L Video Games ed that there could be no game rooms within the boundaries of Glenview, and the only coin- operated machines allowed in the village would be in estab- lishments whose primary func- tion is one other than games, and those places were limited to eight machines. Other com- munities, most notably Chica- go, have discussed prohibiting minors under l8 from playing. In regards to this, Horwitz said, I think it's wrong. The kids that come in know that they're going to throw away three or four dollars. It should be allowed at any age. Dave Rosenston, junior, ex- plained his feelings, I think it fthe rulingj is wrong.
