Coach Larry Faulkner displays his tennis moves by demonstrating his accuracy with a lob. 2 ...N Coach pleased with team effort South's girls' varsity tennis team finished its season with a total of nine wins and five losses and a conference record of 2-3. Coach Larry Faulkner com- mented that their overall per- formance was one of the best ever. The most valuable singles player was freshman Beth Sierks. The most valuable dou- bles team consisted of Julie Walker and Cate Brown. Junior Susie Buckingham completes a forehand volley during practice. Faulkner described the play- ers as the finest team I've coached in my six years of coaching. The JV girls' team had a highly successful season of eleven wins and two losses. They were third in conference with a 3-2 record. Coach Lynn Field said, I feel they were successful because they worked hardf, The highlight of the season for the girls was when they beat Glenbrook North 7-0. The team was quite success- ful overall, which pleased Field. It meant a lot to me to see improvement and maintain such good attitudes. Three varsity team members freshman Beth Sierks, sopho- more Cate Brown and junior Julie Walker qualified for state competition. Glenbrook South was in a five-way tie for 31st place in the team standings. Sierks won her first three matches before losing to Cathy French of Deerfield, who beat her in the conference finals. Brown and Walker lost in the first round due to Walker's sprained ankle. Girls' Tennis 239

Frosh run for top honors in conference The boys' cross country teams had a rather successful season with the varsity, sopho- more, and freshmen placing fourth, second, and first re- spectively in conference. The varsity team was made up mostly of juniors. The boys finished 2nd at the Ridgewood Invitational, and came in 3rd in the Niles West Invitational. Varsity,s number one run- ner Dan Schnell improved his time almost two minutes from last year's season, Head Coach Dave Pasquini said, Dan's impact on the team was great. Jeff Phillips from Maine North, Brian Conlin, Sam Lee, and Gary Gillen also contribut- ed a lot to this year's team, said Pasquini. Sophomores had an excel- lent season, remarked Pas- quini. They ended the season with a 76-28 overall record, Steve Manella was the num- ber one sophomore runner for the better part of the season. Other lead runners were Mike Bechtoldt, Vas Russis, and Bri- an McCleary. Dave Bond and Rob O'Donnell did exception- ally well after recovering from recent injuries, explained Pas- quini. The top performance meets for the sophomores included the Ridgewood Invitational, the Titan Invitational, and the Niles West Invitational. The freshmen came out on top this season with 124 wins and no losses. John Witt was the freshman number one run- ner. Other top runners were Andy Welzel, Ricky Bush, and Greg Harper. The first fresh- men meet, which was against Maine West, was an encourag- ing win. Another key win was against Deerfield in a dual meet. Pasquini said, If they wer- en't the best freshmen runners in the state, they were darn close. Pasquini feels all three squads have the talent to be the finest if they stick together. Freshmen awaits the start ofthe con- ference meet race where they placed first.
