Low senior number brmgs UC to varsity New faces, new coach boost spikers to 2nd in New leadership and player loss to graduation forced the volleyball team through many changes. Coach Debbie Saunders was added to the P.E. staff at GBS and under- took coaching the volleyball team. Also, due to the large number of graduating seniors from the team last year, more underclassmen played varsity. The team improved a great deal from last year, according to Saunders. This has been my first year coaching here, but it's been a very good year, she said. Volleyball clinics were held a week before school started and the team tryouts were the first day of school. A total of about 45 girls turned up, and the top 13 were chosen. Varsity placed 2nd in con- ference, losing only to Deer- field in the conference tourna- ment. I am very happy with the team's performance. They've shown a great deal of Donna Braun and Lynn Boyle send the hall back across the net. conference improvement from the begin- ning of the season. They played very well against all competi- tors. l'd say experience is the only thing we're lacking, stat- ed Saunders. An injury to senior Jackie Monckton set the team back until they started working to- gether. She was injured three weeks into the season, but the team soon was smooth, and working like a team unit, as Saunders put it. The most improved player was Christi Miller, along with the most valuable player, Don- na Braun. Overall, Saunders felt, I've been very pleased with the im- provement the team's made this year. South can look for- ward to a very stong volleyball program in years to come. The JV team, coached by Miss Michelle Harvey, estab- lished a 2-3 record, while the freshmen, coached by Miss Jan Smith, went 1-2.
