Four swimmers go downstate The boys' varsity swim team finished its season with a 4-5 record. It placed third in the Titan Invitational and sent four swimmers to state compe- tition. Mike Ryan, Scott Urice, Rob Stonis, and Steve Mino- gue all qualified in the district meet for the medley relay. Ryan and Urice also qualified individually in the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard breaststroke respectively. In addition, two Glenbrook South records were broken this year. Ryan broke the 100-yard backstroke record with a time of 56.3, and Urice, the breast- stroke record with a time of l:03.3. Head coach Bill Stetson commented, The boys really began to work this year. We started out weak in the begin- ning only having a few upper- classmen, but with the help of our freshmen and sophomores their combined effort really pulled the team through. Mr. Jack Simms coached the JV swimmers and Mr. Don Allen coached the freshmen. Tankers top year with conference titles Coach cites 'total team effort' as biggest factor in success Both girls' swim teams wound up winners, taking their respective conference cham- pionships. Highlights for the varsity team included its astounding victory, 136-36, against Maine East and a qualifying berth in the 1981 state meet in the 400- freestyle relay. The relay team included Eloise Nestler, Stacy Aschenbrenner, Katie Foote, and Anne Corley. Varsity girls placed first in the Glenbrook North Relays, the Titan Relays, and the con- ference meet. A seventh place finish in the New Trier Trevian relays and a fourth place in dis- tricts were also achieved. Robin Hill placed first in the 500-freestyle. Second place finishes included the team of Heidi Asad, Val Colis, As- chenbrenner, and Corley in the 200-medley relay, Nancy Schmitz in the diving competi- tion, Foote in the 500-freestyle and Foote, Hill, Denise Koenig, and Karen Ryan in the 400-free relay. The junior varsity team also had a very successful year, Head Coach Bill Stet- son stated. Ending its season with an 1 1- 1 record, the junior varsity team also captured their con- ference title. Stetson comment- ed, Their first place finish was done by a total team effort. As far as diving was con- cerned, the girls acquired a new coach, Miss Nancy Law- son. Lawson said she was pleased with the team and thought they had an excellent season. The three varsity divers, Nancy Schmitz, Cindy Allen, and Denise Day came in 2nd, 5th, and 6th respectively in conference. Coach Lawson commented, Losing Nancy will be tough, but with all the freshmen re- turning, the outlook is good. .l ..- Junior Cindy Allen makes sure she clears the board as she executes her dive.
