Gymnasts finish 9th After long hours of practice and several meets, the girls' gymnastics team, coached by Tony Calabrese, finished their season with a 22-2 record. The team also placed 9th in the state meet where senior Cathy Adams placed l0th all around, junior Julie Walker placed 8th on beam, and freshman Ste- phani Florio placed 9th on vault. The team's season was high- win conference crown, in state meet finals lighted when they won the con- ference dual championship with a combined season record of 22-2. During the conference meet and throughout the sea- son, freshmen Susan Lindgren and Stephanie Florio per- formed at the varsity level along with sophomores Denise Arrouet, Gail Manning, and Kelli Anderson. Aside from showing their talents at the conference meet, the team also demonstrated its capabilities during the Titan Invitational, which it won. One loss the team will face next year will be that of Ad- ams, the only senior gymnast. We're really going to miss Cathy next year, she'll be hard to replace. We're still looking forward to coming back next year though, commented Ca- labrese. Junior Julie Walker concentrates on her next move on the uneven bars. Two wrestlers qualify for state Progress pleases new head coachg GBN is Titan Victim Glenbrook South wrestlers finished with an overall dual meet record of 7-9 and a con- ference record of 2-3 and qualified Gene Shin and Mike Villa for the state meet. 1 was happy with the pro- gress we made this season when we defeated GBN 35- 21, commented Mr. Allen Bu- low, new head wrestling coach. GBS held a Christmas Tour- nament in which it scored 93 points and placed sixth out of 16 teams. Top finishers in this competition were seniors Mike Villa, First Place in the heavyweight division, and Gene Shin, second in the 185 pound class. Shin was defeated 5-4 by a defending state cham- pion. Other finishers were ju- nior Pete Asquini, Second in the 155 class, senior Bob Haughton, fourth in the 138 class, and Paul Cysewski, fourth in 119 class. The wrestlers also entered the Conant Tournament, which is considered to be one of the toughtest in the area. Villa, Shin, Cysewski, and Bob rl ..... Bulow said sophomores Carter Beck 11321 lbs.1, Kevin Mottlowitz 1145 lbs1, junior Pierre Mitchell 1105 lbs.1, and senior Dan Schnell 1126 lbs.1 performed well and showed good improvement. The Titans placed fourth in district competition and ad- vanced five wrestlers to the sectional meet. Shin won his weight class, Villa and Steve Wohlgemuth 11671 placed sec- ond, and Schnell and Mitchell placed third in their weight classes. Because a number of top athletes will be returning to the squad next year. Bulow expects a good season. Asouini, Mottlowitz, Beck, Mitchell, Wohlgemuth, Homer Coff- man, and Jack Downing are expected to lead next year's team. The JV team concluded its season with a dual meet record of 4-8. The key players were junior Downing 11851, sopho- mores Scott Teschky 11671, Scott Marx 11121, and Dennis Flynn'11261. The team as a whole showed a great deal of im- provement from beginning to the end of the season, com- mented Coach Ronald Harris. Jim Hargis 1981, Mike Bech- toldt 1981, Marx 11051, Flynn 11191, Teschky 11671, Wohlge- muth 11671, and Downing 11851 placed in the finals at the JV conference tournament. As for the freshmen team, they completed their season with an overall dual meet re- cord of 9-3 and 3-2 in confer- ence, which placed them sec- ond. The conference champi- ons were Steve Adams 1901 and Alan Joffrey 11261. The team worked hard and stayed together. We got off to a good start by winning six out of our first seven meets.
