' -1... svi!95 4k Intramurals provide athletes Mmrerewe with competitive opportunities Because there were no tryouts, intramural basketball at Glenbrook South gave all students an opportunity to play basketball. Interested students were divided up. There were 160 participants in all. Competition was within the school only, in a round robin format. Players divided into two leagues, the A league and the B league. The winner of the A league played the winner of the B's. I'm surprised at the level of competition. There are a lot of very good players. The club gives students who enjoy bas- ketball the opportunity to play if they don't make the team, 2l4fIntramural Basketball, Powerlifting stated adviser Mr. Nick Har- kovich. Powerlifting, in its second year at South, was a series of competitive Weightlifting meets. Forty boys took part in powerlifting. Lifters had com- petitions against other schools for rank, and competitions within school as well. As a team, we were one of the top AAU High School teams, stated adviser Mr. Howard Jenewein. The three main areas of competition included bench press, full squat, and dead lift. The totals of all three lifts de- termined winners. This being only our second year, I feel that this club is coming along very well. The re- sults ofthe club on its members are very beneficial, especially if they're involved in sports, to keep them in shapef' com- mented Jenewein. GBS turns out 20 years' worth of champs Throughout a season, an athlete or team strives for a berth in the state meet. Much training and dedication is nec- essary for one to achieve this goal. Since it would be impossible to acknowledge all the state qualifiers, district and confer- ence placers, and all-confer- ence achievers in the history of GBS, Etruscan has listed the state champions and all-state individuals. The state champi- ons were determined by first place finishes in sports that have individual placers, and the all-state individuals were determined by persons selected for this award on team sports. GBS has been the home of many excellent athletes for many years, but only 14 of them have ever won state awards in the last 20 years. They are as follows: Ted Bohn, Football-1964 Mike Reeves, Basketball-1964 Bruce Erb, Football-1965 Mark Taylor, Football-1969 Bob Darden, Gymnastics QHigh Barsl-1971 Tom 0'Donnell, Gymnastics tRingsl-1971 Tim Cysewski, Wrestling- 1972 Mark Hurlburt, Football-1975 Mike Bergman, Gymnastics tSide Horsel-1978 Ed Cramer, Football-1978 Marla Pearlstein, Gymnastic Waultl-1979 Shaun Hoffmeyer, Gymnastics QAII-Around 1981 Dan Ivankovich, Basketbal 1981 Gene Shin, Wrestling-1982 Varsity wrestler Gene Shin pins a New Trier opponent. ln a much more significant match a few weeks later to determine the state chamionship, Shin went on to capture the 185-lb. class title.
