Past catches up with present Yesterdayis accomplishments tum new high school into creditable institution In 1962 Glenbrook Southis first students walked through its doorsg twenty years later, students still filed through South's doors, but they weren't walking into the same school. In a span of two decades, progress had done a remodeling job. Those attending GBS in its early years had to contend with drilling, hammering, the smell of turpentine, and leaky ceilings, but a little suffering back then made it possible for Glenbrook South to develop into a quality high school institution. Standards were upped, new buildings were added, and other improvements were constantly underway that Alumni Dean Menegas, Joe Daab, Steve Levitan, and Ed Dingman sing a tune from Grease in South's last 50's day assembly in 1978. Although 50's day does not receive as much hype now as it used to, students still dress up for the event. 1 it S two decades later changed the face of South. When 1 came here I wanted to make Glenbrook South a great school. I wanted to make excellence a byword for every aspect of the school-and it is! explained Dr. William Schreiner, who has been principal of GBS ever since he came here in 1967. Like any institution, Glenbrook South has had its good and bad times. The school may not have been at the overall high point it had been at the previous year, or vice versa, but, if anybody could judge what has been the most prosperous time in South's history, one ofthe few qualified to do so would be Schreiner, who said, g'Basically, the best time for GBS is now. If this were an upbeat time in society, it would be reflected more in the students, but it's not. But still, in terms of what we're achieveing, I would have to say this is the best time. In 1972 two seniors study in the senior lounge, decorat- ed in support of the peace movement, which, at the time, was gradually coming to an end. Way back in 1963, students were doing The Leg at the Winter Dance. The traditional affair died out for awhile but was brought hack in 1981 by the Student Council. 20th Anniversaryfl7

U GBS g returns to t er. x - ,life From August 1-27 Glenbrook South stu- dents dragged themselves back to GBS in order to prepare for the school year. This meant buying books, getting schedules, and taking pictures. This was obviously registra- tion time for all of GBS. For some it was the last time going through the registration rou- tine, and for others it was the first time. For those who were going through registra- tion at GBS for the first time it was a feeling of a whole new beginning. Freshman Joanne Nicolas stated, I was really excited but a little bit scared about coming to South. It's like starting all over again. During registration, students saw many of their friends they hadn't seen all summer. It was a time for students to get reacquainted before school begins. Many students worked for the bookstore during registration. The students were reliable, responsible, bright, young adults and I was happy to have had them helping me, commented bookstore manager Phyllis Anderson. It was only a week after registration that school got underway. The first day of school was hectic for many students. The new com- puter system had difficulty printing student schedules. Because of the malfunctioning, some students ended up in the wrong classes. Students spent much of the day just trying to figure out where they were supposed to be. As time moved on, however, students along with faculty got back into the swing of the daily school routine.
