World opens doors to Glenview students March was a time when peo- ple began looking ahead. Under- classmen registered for classes for the '82-'83 school year, ju- niors took the SAT test, and many activities began end of the yearn contests. Foreign language teachers went to an international studies conference sponsored by the University of Illinois. For the first time South had an official international studies program within the foreign language cur- riculum. Spanish 473 students learned about current world events - in Spanish. They were subjected to modern terminol- ogy they would not have other- wise learned, and they were able to view world events in a new perspective. The project began slowly when Mr. Albert Turner, instructional supervisor and teacher of Spanish 473, realized that the students at South were very uneducated in this aspect. I wanted to find ways to teach these kids what is going on. It was an experimentj' he ex- plained. Did it work? Ask a stu- dent, replied Turner. Yes. We have all become more aware of what is going on in politics, foreign affairs, and domestic affairs,'i explained class member Harriet Spears. Another addition to the For- eign Language Department was second year Russian, so that stu- dents who began learning Rus- sian when it was introduced could continue. March Curriculumf203
