Task takes English teachers usually teach students English, or, in some cases, they may teach other English teachers, but few have ever taught Chinese Eng- lish teachers the English lan- guage, as Ms. Karen Kuehner did in her sabbatical to China during the '80-'81 school year. Kuehner is back at GBS and returned to her position as head of the English Depart- ment. Kuehner had been invited by the Chinese government to 1i -ii. During her sabbatical to China, Kuehner tried to visit as many land- marks as she could, including The Great Wall of China. supervisor teach in China. At the time she went, the country was not very Americanized. ln China, it's considered rude to ask a question, and my students wouldn't ask me any- thing, explained Kuehner. In order to solve this prob- lem, Kuehner tried to produce an informal atmosphere in her classroom, The chinese are very for- mal on the outside. I used hu- mor to loosen them up,', said Kuehner. Kuehner taught English to students in Shanghai for ap- proximately 19 weeks. In many ways their pro- gress was phenomenal. They OVCTSBEIS all worked extremely hard and developed more Americanized vocabularies, commented Kuehner. Kuehner did not have much trouble adapting to Chinese li- festyle, since the government had furnished her with her own private living quarters. As Kuehner reflected back on her trip to China she com- mented, I had a marvelous time. I traveled around to as many parts of the country as I could. I met many people which helped me gain insight into their lifestyles. Now I am able to compare and contrast China's beliefs with our own. 5 vii .4 J si s.wa. tg: 'gf- as ' x e i ssst .ct f E,-T ,J t 'I Mr. Robert Schoenwetter: History of World Civiliza- tion, U.S. History Mrs. Claire Shannon: Eng- lish 163, 363 Mr. Craig Shaw: Algebra, Calculus, Geomtry Mr. Robert Simmons: Col- lege Counselor Mr. Jack Simms: Senior, Junior, Sophomore Physical Education Ms. Jan Smith: Junior, Sophomore Physical Educa- tion Mr. Terry Smothers: American Literature, Eng- lish 173, Freshman Home- room, Grammar Review, Intermediate Composition Mr. Dan Sonnenberg: Freshman Physical Educa- tion Mrs. Ann Stamas: Office Practice, Typing Mr. Donn Start: Business, Consumer Ed, Typing Mr. Rod Steffey: Biology 163, 283 Mr. William Stetson: Sen- ior Physical Education, Swimming stafff 1 si
