Sophomores South parties: 6Shout,' hula and go punk What do togas, Hawaiian shirts, and garbage bags have in common? They were all mainstays at parties thrown by GBS students. Toga parties, made popular in the movie Animal House, were noted for their excessive rowdiness, alcoholic consumption, and Roman at- tire. The song Shout, from the movie, often was heard at these parties, while those pre- sent sang along and acted hyper. According to senior John Shannon, toga parties seemed to be the most preva- lent. The Assembly Writers' Guild's toga party was so much fun. Everyone had lots of fun. It was totally rowdy!,' Punk parties too, tended to be rowdy. Those in atten- dance could be seen wearing Hefty garbage bags, leopard skins, leather, and chains, as well as multi- colored hair. Junior Marci Levin, a self-de- clared professional punker, felt that punk parties exist because punk is in. The par- ties just follow the fads. Formal parties, in contrast, required formal attire, and a more mellow atmosphere. Hawaiian parties, also preva- lent, were identified by brightly colored Hawaiian shirts, shorts, and grass skirts.
