Rennard in grateful appreciation for the contribution he has made to the welfare of the class and school. As class sponsor he has faced many difficult problems, but with the experience gained from sponsoring eight other senior classes, he has always found a solution and carried our class through to a successful conclusion. Mr. Rennard, a native of Phoenixville received both his B.S. and M.S. from Penn State. I-le came to Glen-Nor after many years of teaching experience at North Coven- try High School. In four years he has served Glen-Nor as head of the science department, he has made many a science prob- lem clear to his classes. As attendance director he has convinced many a tardy student of the need for punctu- ality. Mr. Rennard states: You as seniors, have reached one of your goals in your struggle through life. You have possibilities of doing great things-pro- vided you put forth the effort-Which I know that you are capable of putting forth. You reap, in later years, what you sow in early life. You have gained knowledge, during the years at Glen- Nor, put that knowledge to an excellent use after you leave. lf 1 ng..- A07 fwlniifafwi aw n W N v Li. T--' , , . It would cost us too much and look cheap besides. With these and hundreds of other similar arguments, the problems of the l949 Chieftain were slowly worked out. Under the capable supervision of Mr. Wert and the talent and experience of our editor, Harry Oakes, the staff's dream of the biggest and best yearbook in Glen- Nor's history came true. This was quite a feat, too, as last years annual won first prize in the Columbia University Scholastic Press Contest and second prize in the University of Minnesota Scholastic Press Contest. But this year the book was enlarged to 80 full pages, all the freshman, sophomores, and juniors were giveri individual pictures, and many other improvements were made over last year's Chieftain. However, to get first class year books is a lot more work than most people realize. The job was started last year when Miss Isabel Creagmile signed the contract for the Campus Publish- ing Company to publish the book and chose the staff. This year Mr. Wert was made Chieftain sponsor and he and the staff set right in on getting the yearbook ready. First, the theme had to be chosen and after the circus theme was adopted, the general plan had to be drawn up to determine where each section should be and how long it should be. Then the staff got a master copy from the Campus Publishing Company and laid out everything just as it would be, laying out spaces for photographs, write-ups, and sketches. Next Wick Studios was hired to take pictures, the staff photographers started taking snapshots, and work was started on the write-ups and drawing. After all of these were in, there was still the job of checking and typing the articles and sending everything to press, carefully. marked to show how it was to be. The actual publishing was only half the job. We also had to get about 52.150 to pay for it. The subscription drive, started off with a bang by an assembly program, was one of the main ways in which this was accomplished. The drive was very successful this year and paid off with over 300 subscriptions. Also the ads and patrons in the back of the book helped to offset the publishing cost. The ads were a new feature this year and contributed several hun- dred dollars. I-lowever, probably the greatest money-getter of all was the assessments paid by the classes and organizations of the school for their write-ups and pictures in the Chieftain. After all the work of publishing and paying for the Chieftain. the staff was still agreed that the fine yearbook we produced was well worth all the trouble. ROBERT GALLAGER Auf! The council consists ot representa- tives elected trom each ot the homerooms, plus a president and vice-president elected in the big spring elections. With the able leadership of the sponsor, Miss Iones, and the president, Fred Sebelist, the council conducts many polls to find the wishes of the student body. Then the proper cornmittes look into these wishes and finally the council acts upon them. One of the most important comrnittes is the monitors. These are responsible tor keeping the traffic moving smoothly in the halls, This year- the monitors are also trying to take overthe cafeteria at lunch time instead ot re- quiring a teacher to supervise. Another committee manages the charity drives. This year, instead of having a separate drive tor each charity, there was ia big l'five-in- one drive and the proceeds were split be- tween the tive major charities. Other committees take charge of the juke box and awarding attendance, neatness, and citizenship banners. They also have charge of the point system awards in the spring. The student council is a fine example of democracy in the making. ,.... ...Nm , Y .-,:., ,L f Q ,, uf Q, f .we A 46 .GJD . aa.: 'K 1. l Q , 4 ',q1 A.jihg.wx 1 ,-' J'a'gJ'f'm! , fr 5 , gf f..,.,1 ,, ' F. Last fall in the Cultural Olym- pics' band competition, this practice paid off with four awards, the highest possible honor. At all the iootball games and parades the band also shows its excellence with a beau- tiful display of majorettes, color guards, acro- bats, and band, all performing at once. lt also plays indoors at all the assembly programs and in both the Ianuary concert with the Elks band and the large combined spring concert, where the fine music always draws a large crowd. The band is now putting on a drive for new uniforms to further improve itself. Much of the credit for the band is due to the very popular and accommodating director, Mr. Marlin O'Neal, who does a wonderful job taking charge of all the music in the school. 53 8.7 ,'-3' Q9 Q' 1 SENIOR GLEE CLUB First Row: I. Having completed a successful season, losing two games, both by 2-l scores, and winning six, the brilliant hockey stars of 1948 hung up their tunics for another year, Under the capable coaching of Mrs. Betty Palmer, the hockeyists, with the brilliant playing of Ethel White, who during the season was a. dread to our opponents with six goals, along with Dot Orr, our fullback captain, and Doris Mellon, stellar halfback, gave our foes of nearby communities some- thing to remember. Our little sophomore goalie, Marian Rowdon, should inspire the underclassmen, for she, along with Nancy Richards, will be letter winners of the '48 season. But lets not forget our other seniors, who have laid down their sticks by winning their last game. These include lessie Bishop, our persistent fullback, Margaret Aird, the gal who gave the opposing centers plenty of trouble, Doris Hutchins and Carol Teetsel, inners with beautiful stickwork, and small but mighty Shirley Doyle, who was a passing sensation for her fellow varsity members. Row Two: Mr. Knoll. R. Block. The '48-'49 basketball season was somewhat of a disappointment to the student body of Glen-Nor, for the lndians went through the season winning but one game. Some of the outstanding players on the squad were: Russ Bamberger, forward, who, although handicapped by a bad ankle, was always a scoring threat to the opposition. There were also Don Bonsall and Bill Bevan, alternating forwards, who along with dumping in two pointers played a rugged floor game. The center position was held down by lengthy Leighton Whittaker who by sinking those fading one handed shots was always near the top in the scoring column. Scrappy would be the appropriate adjective to describe little Dick Brock who was not noticed by the spectators until the latter part of the season when he began sinking baskets right and left. Veteran guard, Skip Knoll, was the key man E. Mandle. L. Wit-aker. E. Onimus. D. Bonsall. A. Porter- iield. R. Iarvis. in the setup for it was Skip who attempted to get his teammates to work together. Skip had a rather poor scoring season although occa- sionally he managed to get free of his guard and set up a shot. Among the reserves who usually go un- noticed for their efforts were Andy McLaren, fleet little guard, easy Ed Mandl, who was understudy to Leighton Whittaker, and was known for his tricky passes, Eddie Onimus, who as only a sophomore, gained much experience as a forward on the varsity. Mr. Knoll is looking forward to a more suc- cessful season next year. He hopes that his players have gained basketball knowledge and experience by this season. Because the Chieftain must go to press we will not be able to publish the results of the Kiwanis tournament where Glen-Nor plays Ridley Park. Kneeling: I. Colborq. I. Reynolda. K. Brunton, C. It is interesting to note that a large percentage of the losses were by very close margins, three of them were lost by one point, Mr. Hirst picked a fast, sharp shooting team to repre- sent'Glen-Nor. Among these were Charley Ellis, who was always a main factor in the point getting department, and Louie Llewellyn, little, but mighty handy to have on the team. Those boys were the forwards. George Iurosky held down the center slot and his height greatly aided the Indians. The guards were Iim Veacock and Iohn Reynolds. It was these boys that held down the oppositions' high scorers. Consisting mostly of juniors, these females need only experience to become an A-1 team. Returning this year are three previous letter winners with plenty of zip. All three constitute this season's shooting gallery: these include Elaine Hardenbergh, our tall- est player who this year switched from her guarding post to a sharp shooting forward, Ioan Hitchner, a little girl with plenty on the ball, and a dead-eye at the basket, and senior Dot Orr, whose floor work is superior, and her aiming ability far above average. Nancy Richards, a sophomore plays very well and thrills the spectators with her cor- ner set shots. On the defensive side, Iessie Bishop, our jolly, but speedy guard, Claire White, a brilliant shot-blocking artist, and Ginnie Eisenbrey whose earnest playing brings her many hard blows from the floor, but usually ends up with the possession for Glen-Nor, excelled in every second of their defensive 32 minutes. Having lost thus far all our games, most of which we gave the other team plenty to worry about, the squad pushes forth more effort, having learned a new set of plays which are bound to work, and the will of every girl on the squad to win. But let's not forget our I. V.'s who have put forth magnificent exhibitions in all their Competitions. On the shooting side of the black line we find Ethel White, a most sin- cere player, Marian Rowdon, who is going to excell in her later years at Glen-Nor, and Pat King whose vim is upheld all 32 playing minutes. The guards, Carol Dyson, Sue Ienkins, Shirley Glenn, Carol Teetsel, and Dos l-lutchins, control the backboard, block shots, and play their heart out to send the ball to the hustling forwards to chalk up two points.
