Editor Constance Coles Photography Editors Dana Andersen and Paul Wotzak Art Editors Eric Roemer and Jay Johnson Business Manager Jere Farrah Advisor Miss Eileen Fleming The class of 1963 dedicates this edition of Profile to the memory of Miss Gertrude Van Eman, who was esteemed by her students and colleagues as a skillful and devoted teacher, admired as a gracious lady, and loved as a warm friend. 4 As soon as autumn of this year had come And all the joys of summer days were done, Our halls of learning opened wide their doors. Reluctantly our youth resumed their chores, Resumed them in a new and sparkling edifice. How different from the old,” we said of this, While gazing on its enameled walls And walking through its gleaming halls. For every student’s memories embraced An older, more traditional place. The buckling ceiling, the pipes all leaking Caused Mr. Maiden’s frantic speaking: “Will Mr. Putala report at once! All this gave way in several months To a lively campaign in a heated tone Which ended well for George Maccarone. Sock hops and Dress-up Days were charted, And students to school their Pepsi caps carted. Then, with Vincent Taranto, our President, Down the aisle at graduation we went. So here is recorded each foot and mile In our book called ’63 Profile. Mr. C. H. Bentley Mr. J. C. Maiden . £ing J? o (iourf Mr. Robert M. O’Kane MR. SAYLES CLARK Syracuse U. MR. With Mr. Scuteri as its advisor and under the ever helpful supervision of Mr. DiChiara, the members of the council planned many activities. One of the first was a sock hop which was held after school. The students also helped raise money, by redeeming bottle caps, for a scholarship to be given to a deserving senior. School spirit week proved to be one of the most exciting of the activities. (SEATED) H. Dalidowicz, Managing Editor; S. Weil, Literary Editor; E. Mainwaring, Editor-in-Chief. (STANDING ) P. In September we took over Room 214, as “our room.” We made our first deadline with only minor difficulties. By the second and third ones, we were sure that everything was a major catastrophe. The day we found our eyebrow pencil clogged in the sharpener was almost too much for us! We needed it desperately to mark pictures! However, with the help of a radio and a few minor distractions . . . standing on the chairs while we were serenaded by a staff member . . . doing our art work and lettering on the tables instead of the paper ... we finished at last!!! It was nerve-racking at times, but we’re glad we did it and we hope you are too! 76 ROW I — R. Goler; D. Durkin, editor-in-chief; R. Graf, editor-in-chief; L. Greene ROW 2 — S. Maurer; A. Lee; B. This year with the beautiful new choral room, and a full period rehearsal, Mr. Wortley was at last able to work with a full chorus. In February many members of the chorus visited New York for a day to see “The Sound of Music. tfltorus This year in his Freshman Chorus Mr. Wortley had a select group of students who were really interested in singing. The club set up its own government composed of the officers, the full-fledged citizens and the newly-initiated “servi.” The club took a trip to add to its knowledge of Roman life. They help make Mr. Lamberson’s difficult task a little easier by teaching new and inexperienced Masquers the “ropes” of the stage. 92 ROW 1 — E. Scott, E. Merchant, S. Athearn ROW 2 — P. Tourney, S. [ };• The entire cast of “Our Town.” 94 I thought you were the prettiest girl in the world.” This year the Masquers of Glen Cove High School presented Our Town by Thornton Wilder. It was a first for our school, as there was no scenery in the play, and some of the action took place off the stage. Everyone who had seen the play agreed that it was the best the school group had ever done. Mr. Lamberson, the director of the play, did a fine job with his cast, as he turned many inexperienced performers into polished actors. All in all, Our Town deserved all the credit it received, for it was truly a great show! “the name of this play is Our Town.” “Emily ... Did you get the third problem? ... the third!!' The Glen Cove Varsity football team opened this season with a 35—0 victory over Roslyn. The team was led by this year’s MVP Timmy Pearson, as quarterback. The following week, the Covers defeated Bethpage, 13—6. Then came the big rivalry with Port Washington. For three quarters, the teams fought in a scoreless game. Then, in the fourth quarter, a fumble was recovered by Tippy Henderson, who ran some 80 yards for the only touchdown of the afternoon. Glen Cove won, 6—0. In later games we lost to North Shore, 27—6 but went on to win over Island Trees, 19—6 and Wcstbury, 21—7. With a 4—1 record in the league, Glen Cove had to beat Man-hasset in order to tie for first place with North Shore. Although the team fought hard, it was defeated 7—0. The last game of the year was against the tough Mineola Mustangs. Glen Cove’s only touchdown was made by Captain Doug Gale and the final score was 21—7. Glen Cove ended with a 5—3 season which, as Coaches Donald and Butz pointed out, was very commendable and gave valuable experience to the Sophomore and Junior members of the squad. Because of this, next year’s team will be a tough one to stop! 100 ROW 1 — J. Mcrcadantc, T. Evell, A. Bergman, J. Burns, J. Strumph, R. Mickcns, M. Byrd, M. Murchison, C. Collins, R. Townsend, B. Jackson. ROW 2 — Coach A. Dexter, M. Stango, C. Muldoon, R. Cornell, J. Powell, B. Townsend, J. Rondeau, J. Fliesher, J. Cisco, R. Doherty, G. Grunwald, H. Fiore. Under the able leadership of coaches Dexter and DiChiara, the Jay Vec football team had a fine season. What these boys have learned this year will benefit them next year on the Varsity squad. ROW 1 — G. Maccaronc, J. Keeling, N. Moira, J. Isaac, T. Niemi, D. Niccolini. ROW 2 — A. Lane, L. Nawojchik, J. Isaac, P. Benson, A. Gallo, V. Karpinski, S. Maurer. ROW I — T. Giovanni, G. Perillo. 103 Doug Gale shows batting form which made him one of the team’s top “sluggers.” John Kirkpatrick, fine first baseman as well as hitter, was a valuable asset to the team. The 1963 baseball team had its share of wins, as many of last year’s boys came through to give G.C. a good season. Some of the second year men were Doug Gale, Johnny Kirkpatrick, Kenny Palmiotto, and Richie Wallenstein. Mr. Lamberson, the coach, said the team played well together, and caught on rapidly to what he showed them. Vardi Karpinski, preparing to catch a high pop foul, handled the team’s catching chores. ROW 1 — C. Wcrtheim, R. Rubin, B. Fishalow, S. Berens, R. Schloss, C. Carlson. ROW 2 — R. Rothstein, E. Rocmer, R. Meyer, G. Alexander, C. Osborn, L. Macklin, D. Braun. Although its record wasn’t a winning one, Glen Cove’s Varsity wrestling team, coached by Mr. Scuteri, per-formed impressively. Hindered throughout the year by injuries, many times the team had to forfeit valuable points for lack of wrestlers. Despite these handicaps, the team showed improvement over last year’s squad and ended this year’s season with a very favorable outlook for our next wrestling team. I F I ♦elm ROW I — J. Daley, S. Hunter, F. Jones, co-captain J. Mannillo, D. Sharpe. ROW 2 — Coach N. Scott, J. Lupinski, P. Wotzak, S. Greenstein, P. Brown, co-captain J. Hastings. TOP ROW — (L. to R.) — S. Stanco. 108 Playing in the beautiful gym of our new school, the Varsity basketball team had a successful season, and finished in third place against rough competition. The Covers, led by co-captains Charlie Weng and John Kirkpatrick, made up for their comparative lack of height by aggressiveness and alert play. S|X‘cial recognition should go to the fine ball handling, shooting and exciting play of Charlie Weng, as well as to the productive performances of John Kirkpatrick and Joe Gasowski. Fine performances by several juniors and sophomores also helped the Covers throughout the season. Our third place standing wasn't decided until the last league game of the season. This game was played against Manhassct on their home court, and the Glen Cove fans who came, saw the Covers edge out an exciting 51 to 47 victory. The great team effort and determination demonstrated by the Covers in this game was evident throughout the season. It all paid off by giving Glen Cove a successful season and a chance to play in the first round of the Nassau County Playoffs. Varsitv Basketball G.C.. .54—62 . . . Mineola G.C.. .66—38 . . .
