FOREWORD As we reflect back on our final year in Glen Cove High School, we think not only of our school and social life, but also of events on a national and international level. Although the effects of these occurrences were not always apparent, their impact is felt today. Our Senior Year has been a year of challenge and change ... a year that has raised many questions which will require deeper thought, and probing on our part. Glen Cove became a spot of national interest when Premier Nikita Khrushchev arrived with his entourage to week-end at Killenworth, the Russian Estate on Dosoris Lane. Cries of Cuba si, Yanqui no! coincided with Khrushchev's emphatic table pounding in the United Nations Assembly. Thirteen new African nations gained their freedom and a voice in world affairs; riots and economic instability plagued the Congo, unprepared to cope with the problems of independence. The South wrestled with the Supreme Court's decision on integration in public schools. Vice President Nixon and Senator Kennedy became opponents in a series of much publicized public debates, with the presidency hanging in the balance. Here, then, is a record of our Senior Year ...

Walt Whitman, Leaves of Grass We, the class of 1961, dedicate our yearbook to Mrs. Kathryn Smith who has endeavored, throughout her years of teaching at Glen Cove High School, to bring to us the beauty of the English language and of English literature. Although she has been unable to continue teaching during this year, because of an unfortunate accident, we wish to express our gratitude for her many years of service and her unselfish devotion to her students.
