Great is the English speech. Walt Whitman, Leaves of Grass We, the class of 1961, dedicate our yearbook to Mrs. Kathryn Smith who has endeavored, throughout her years of teaching at Glen Cove High School, to bring to us the beauty of the English language and of English literature. Although she has been unable to continue teaching during this year, because of an unfortunate accident, we wish to express our gratitude for her many years of service and her unselfish devotion to her students. FOREWORD As we reflect back on our final year in Glen Cove High School, we think not only of our school and social life, but also of events on a national and international level. Although the effects of these occurrences were not always apparent, their impact is felt today. Our Senior Year has been a year of challenge and change ... a year that has raised many questions which will require deeper thought, and probing on our part. Glen Cove became a spot of national interest when Premier Nikita Khrushchev arrived with his entourage to week-end at Killenworth, the Russian Estate on Dosoris Lane. Cries of Cuba si, Yanqui no! coincided with Khrushchev's emphatic table pounding in the United Nations Assembly. Thirteen new African nations gained their freedom and a voice in world affairs; riots and economic instability plagued the Congo, unprepared to cope with the problems of independence. The South wrestled with the Supreme Court's decision on integration in public schools. Vice President Nixon and Senator Kennedy became opponents in a series of much publicized public debates, with the presidency hanging in the balance. Here, then, is a record of our Senior Year ... It needs a large group of indispensables who perform the many tasks that keep a school running smoothly. These people behind the scenes make up the office, guidance, medical, cafeteria, and custodial staffs. The office staff handles all of the clerical work which includes absentees lists, student records, and of course detention passes. Coping with interview schedules and college transcripts keeps the guidance staff busy. The medical staff is responsible for the health and well being of Glen Cove High students and their patience with the strange maladies they are confronted with day after day is endless. Nurses Brown and Klein administer to Bob Nash. 12 Julius Putola, head custodian, checks school equipment to make sure that it is in good working condition. The cafeteria staff takes charge of filling the stomachs of hundreds of students, tired and hungry after a four and a half hour stretch of classes. They always serve a delicious lunch at the lowest prices in town. If you have ever tried to wrestle with an obstinate locker or tried to sharpen your pencil in a pencil sharpener spewing shavings, then you realize the value of our custodial staff. They keep the school and all the equipment in good working condition. 8TAFFS Cafeteria Staff: left to right: R. Putala, R. Nelson, I. Smith, W. Dowling, not pictured, F. Hancock. VARSITY FOOTBALL Again this year the Glen Cove High School Varsity team, coached by Mr. Donald and Mr. Butz, won the N.S.A.L. Division Two championship. The Covers, led by co-captains Bob Kormoski, Pete Mickens, and Joel Sandler, and with the able help of speedy Oscar Steadman, rolled up an impressive undefeated record with one tie. The high point of the season was reached on October 29th when the Covers met a strong Clarke High School team, and, in a tight battle, won, 19—7. The victory gave the team the League Championship for the second year in a row. When the season came to a close, the Covers had increased their unbeaten streak to fourteen games, and hopes were high in anticipation of another outstanding squad next year. FOOTBALL The Junior Varsity Football team, had a fair record this year, winning two games and losing three with two ties. The squad gained valuable experience, however, and this should be of great use in our quest for another varsity league championship. Head Coach was Mr. Dexter, assisted by Mr. DiChiara. Whoa there! BASEBALL After many seasons at the bottom of the heap, the Cove Varsity Baseball Team triumphed by winning first place in Division II of the North Shore Athletic Association. With fine pitching, led by Bill Kehoe, Nick Jensen, and Bill Shurbet, adept fielding, and excellent teamwork, they reversed their 2—13 record of last year with a 13—2 performance. One of the highlights of the season was a no-hit performance by Bill Kehoe. W. Johanson calmly trots in after a home run. Coach Donald gives The Big Five some advice on what plays will win the game. BASKETBALL R. Dubcki Dubic leaps into the air as he tries to sink the ball. Unbelievable! That is the only word which comes to mind when one thinks of the phenomenal comeback which characterized the Varsity Basketball Team's record this season. Coached by Mr. Donald, the team lost seven out of its first ten games. However, from that point on it showed great improvement, finally becoming a participant in the exciting Nassau County Playoffs. True to its seasonal record for being a late starter. the Glen Cove Basketball Team came from behind to snatch a two-point victory from Baldwin High School. The game, the most exciting of the season, was climaxed as Karl Kampe sank the winning layup. The victory, showing the determination and drive of our team, gave us the opportunity to play in the quarter finals of the Nassau County Playoffs. CR0S8 -COUNTRY FIRST ROW, left to right; Mr. Williams (Coach), Joe Dempsey, Henry Parsons, Victor Fuches, Eugene Swier. SECOND ROW: Steve Kaufman, Jeff McCall, Allan Sandler, Jay Kaplan, (not pictured — Ira Sadoff). This year Glen Cove High initiated a new sport into its interscholastic schedule. Cross Country. This sport entails a run of not more than two and one half miles through the surrounding area. Although the squad had a poor season, the sport is likely to be a regular addition to the school's sports schedule in the years to come. This year's team was coached by Mr. Williams, a member of the Junior High faculty. WRE8TLING Press him, take him down, these were the cries which resounded throughout the Deasy School gym this winter as the new Varsity Wrestling Squad practiced. The team, coached by Mr. Harvey Jes-sum, got much needed experience for next year, especially since the team contained so many underclassmen. One of the finest wrestlers on the squad was John McCaully, who achieved a nearly perfect record in his matches against formidable opponents. Mike Berger and Phil Lofton: Practice makes perfect. John McCaully takes Peter Blatt for a two in one ride. R. Beck watches as P. Graf stretches for an overhand slam. TENNIS This year the tennis team showed improvement over last year's team. Its record was not too impressive due to the fact that the team lost many close decisions. Led by Stuart Kaufman, Jim Wal-zer. Bob Nash, and Bruce Goldberg, it won several matches. Coach Barteau is looking forward to a good season next year. GOLF Golf teams in the past at Glen Cove High have been noted for their excellence. Last year was no exception. Lou Farrell, Ben Sorecenski, Stu Kaufman, Bill Dwyer, and Sal Moccia led the team to an impressive record and second place in its division. The team placed third in the Nassau-SufFolk Championships at the end of the season. In this tournament, Stu Kaufman was among the leaders of the two-day event with an aggregate score of 161. With seasoned veterans like Sorecenski, Kaufman, Dwyer, and Moccia returning this year, the team is headed for a league championship. Above: B. Goldberg — Here I come, readv or not. The jumpers, runners, and throwers pooled their power and, with the aid of Coach Butz, wound up with a record of five wins and two losses, boosting them to second place in the division. The season's climax occurred when Pete Mickens came in second in the hurdles at the Intersectional at West Point. Varsity Track Team: Left to Right: KNEELING: R. Marrone, M. Coleman, D. Kunit, L. Although the team was behind at the beginning of the season, it surged ahead to become a close contender for the League Championship. On October 25 they lost their chance for the championship by tying with Great Neck South, which had met and defeated them earlier in the season. The team is to be commended for its excellent record, a record unequaled by a Glen Cove Soccer team for thirteen years. Sal Moccia, Captain of the Soccer team, tries to evade his defensive man. PROFILE Strange sounds emerged from deep within the confines of Room 208 as Profile Editors chortled over their latest captions, stealthily hid milk containers and sandwich wrappers from the eyes of Mr. Bentley, and knocked frantically on the door which can be opened only from the outside. Aside from Profile work, our editors became experts at foul-shooting into the wastebasket, blank verse and the pros and cons of beatniks. The Profile staff even witnessed the abduction of the unabridged dictionary from the library by several prankish seniors. Yes, Profile has the low-down on the seniors and after a year of hard work we're only too glad to say WE'VE HAD IT!! Now you've got it and we hope you like itl Someday we really must get organized. BAND AND CHORUS This year the band added something new to its ranks — a student leader. Linda McCleary was chosen to lead the band as an experimental drum major. She did an excellent job, and it is expected that this new position will be continued. The band took part in many school activities this year. These included playing at the football games, the Memorial Day Parade, and at the annual Jones Beach Concert. Glen Cove High School was also represented by the band at the Long Island Fair, an exhibition of musical skills, in which a number of Long Island schools participated. Chorus With everyone running in and out to his various club meetings during the period reserved for chorus this year, the quality of their performance seemed doubtful. However, the doubt was needless. Mr. Wortley and Mrs. Young did an exceptional job in overcoming the circumstances and preparing the chorus for the annual Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and Spring Concert programs. This year the chorus added much to the Christmas spirit by singing through the halls of our high school and caroling for the patients at the Community Hospital at Glen Cove. The Majorettes, led by Terry De Araujo and Margo Gengarelly, and under the direction of Mrs. Joan Verrando, perform with the Covettes at football games and at the Spring Concert at Jones Beach. The girls put in many long hours of practice after school to perfect their twirling and dance routines, and judging from the results, we can assure you that it is well worth their effort. The Covettes are the ambitious and spirited girls that do precision dancing during the half-time at our home football games. Under the direction of Joan Verrando, a former Rockette, the group romped through a Circus Show this year, amusing and delighting game spectators. Continuation of their hard work and practice should produce more good half-time shows next year. Under the leadership of their President, Lou Visslailli, Vice President, Bob Kormoski, Secretary-Treasurer, Jim Morgan, and Faculty Advisor, Mr. Di-Menna, the boys have carried out many successful activities. They help out at basketball games by selling programs, tickets, and Pepsi-Colas, and controlling spectators. Leaders' Club is the girls answer to the Varsity Club. It is composed of girls selected because of their athletic keenness as well as their ability to get along with others and to lead a group. The girls demonstrated gymnastics on Parents Night and also co-sponsored a Square Dance with the Varsity Club. The Varsity Club dispenses refreshment during half-time at a basketball game. FRENCH CLUB The French Club set as its goal this year a better understanding of France and the French people. Under the guidance of Mrs. Baslaw and Mr. Snyder, both newcomers to our French Department, the members of the club have come a long way toward this goal. As part of their varied program, meetings were conducted in French and the club attended performances of Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme and La Co-medie Franjaise. Not only did les Sieves de franjais publish their own newspaper En Garde, they also performed in a French play, and ambitiously presented a series of moneymaking projects in hopes of sending a deserving French student to Paris during the summer. An enriched and more enjoyable French course was the reward for their efforts. SPANIGH CLUB OIS! The Spanish Club, under its new supervisor, Mrs. Szulman, succeeded in bringing a touch of colorful Spain to Glen Cove High. Included in the club's activities were the annual cake sale, a dance — Spanish style, of course — and freshman initiations. To end the year right, the sefiors and senoritas took a trip into New York City for a Spanish show and dinner at a Spanish restaurant. There are backseat drivers even in France, as Steve Salem-son and Barbara Lewis prove in a short skit presented in French at one of the French Club meetings. French Newspaper (French 4 students). In the tradition of Virgil, Cicero, and Caesar, the Latin Club met once a month this year to relive the days of old. Freshmen plebes were initiated, ancient games were played, and Roman songs were sung. The climax of the year was the annual Roman Banquet. The Roman populace arrived dressed for the occasion. Slaves were sold at exorbitant prices, entertainment was provided, and members of the S.P.Q.R. had a wonderful time feasting on chicken, grapes, and wine fit for the gods (grape juice). And after you're through polishing my sandals . . Allen Sandler chains Jane Goldberg, who has been sold into bondage for a week, at the Latin Club Slave Auction. 39 COMMERCIAL CLUB Commerciot Club: Left to Right: Mr. Hornosh, M. Thompson, M. Wolzok, B. Ogelsby, M. Robivic, G. Becker, J. Walker. Hail to our future Business Leaders. This year our Commercial Club, under the leadership of Mr. Harnash, jumped up another step and became charter members of the National F.B.L.A., Future Business Leaders of America. This year the club also became a stockholder, with stock in May's Department store. The club is a hard-working group that consists of both boys and girls working together on different projects that will give them experience for future business careers. Their biggest project is the Commercial Digest, published quarterly, which features a business student of the month. A very active group, the club has among other things visited St. Johns University where they attended two classes in the commercial field. HOMEMAKING CLUB Do you remember that wonderful aroma that filled the halls 'round Thanksgiving time? The girls of the Homemaking Club, skilled in the domestic arts, concocted a delicious Thanksgiving Dinner in honor of the Senior faculty members. Under the guidance of Miss Vieau, a recent addition to the faculty, the Homemaking Club has become one of the busiest in the school. When Mr. Kennedy was elected President, the girls in the Homemaking Club weren't surprised. At their November Cake Sale they polled the contented customers, and came up with their own Gallup survey. At Christmas time they presented lovely table cloths, made by the members of the club, to both Mr. Maiden and Mr. Bentley. Our future Homemakers are certainly off to a good start. FUTURE TEACHERS An apple for the teacher — a future teacher. The members of the Future Teachers' Club gain valuable experience by assisting as cadet teachers in the schools of the Glen Cove school system. The contribution of money to the Nephrosis and Multiple Sclerosis funds has become one of its most important annual projects. Another traditional activity is the candlelight initiation ceremony. This year the members also attended conventions given by the Long Island Future Educators and the Future Teachers' Association. FUTURE TEACHERS CLUB: Left to Right: B. Buckhout, M. Rondeau, V. FUTURE NUR9E8 Looking back on its five years of service to our school, the Future Nurses Club can well be proud of its accomplishments. Their activities included a tea held at the home of one of its members, talks from prominent people in the nursing profession, and informative films. Most important, the club gives girls who are planning to enter some form of nurse's training a chance to find out about the programs offered by various schools. The club helps the girls become well acquainted with the exciting and satisfying field of nursing which they are preparing to enter. 41 LIBRARY CLUB Where is the card catalog? What is the Dewey Decimal System? Just ask any member of the Library Club and they are sure to know. The Library Club consists of girls who help locate books, stamp date due cards, rearrange books on the shelves and in other ways assist the librarians. They have fun, too, while holding their annual club tea, trip, and initiation ceremonies. President Valerie Hagerman conducts the Library Club meet, ing, which takes place in the logical locale — The Library. Library Club initiations are the downfall of many an unsuspecting soul. Left to Right: G. Trepess; C. Sukman; C. Smith; R. Ryavec; L. Lee. INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS CLUB The International Relations Club, under the guidance of Mr. Barteau, has come a long way since it was formed last year. The purpose of the club is to stimulate the students' interest in current events in conjunction with international affairs. This is accomplished through debates, lectures, and trips. This year a debate was held concerning the controversial topic, resolved: That the United States should intervene in Cuba. Also planned this year was a very successful visit to the United Nations General Assembly. International Relations Club: Left to Right: H. Hoffman; L. McMorris; C. Donahue, E. Parry, B. Salvesen, M. Sielder, J. Kaplan, P. Schwind, G. Forbes. 42 JR.-9ENI0R 9CIENCE CLUB For those interested in science, the Junior-Senior Science Club serves a two-fold purpose. First, it provides a way for students to visit industry and obtain firsthand information about possible future careers. Secondly, the club provides a method for further advancement in the scientific fields that interest the student. The club is fortunate because of the many top scientists who visit the meetings. The knowledge gained from the club will surely, in the future, profit the member and help him to attain his goal in life. Mr. Bass demonstrates a principle of Science to eager members of the General Science Club. Jr. Sr. Science Club: Left to Right: Mr. Schwartzapfel; M. Crowder; Mr. Gluck; M. Robinson; C. Castelli; H. BIOLOGY CLUB Above and beyond the standard curriculum of tenth grade science — that was the goal and the achievement of the Biology Club. The members were required to have an eighty average and the will to work. At the club meetings Biology was brought from the textbook to the lab. Experimentation and the scientific approach were emphasized. The club through its interesting and stimulating program seeks to encourage its members to follow the four year science sequence offered in Glen Cove. Each of Bio members was required to work on a project worthy of entering in a science fair. Mr. Browne, the faculty advisor, deserves a great deal of credit for his part in making the Biology so educational. 43 THE SUBURBANITE Soviet Premier Khrushchev chats with Ghana President Kwame Nkru-mah September 25, 1960 while newsmen and Soviet aides listen at the entrance to Soviet estate in Glen Cove. Not only was it the largest Frosh class in the history of Glen Cove High School; it was the first Freshman class to have two fund-raising projects instead of the usual one. The Class held its annual dance in March and combatting a split-session schedule sold Wind-breakers to upperclassmen they rarely saw. To climax their activities a Class Picnic was held and Mr. DiChiara and his Freshmen celebrated a successful year. 107 P.M. Fresh.: FRONT ROW, left to right: D. Foies, D. Dolkos, D. Curtis, M. WONDERLAND BY NIGHT This year the dates of the Senior Ball and the Junior Prom were switched. To complete the changeover the Seniors sponsored the Junior Prom and the Senior Ball was sponsored by the Juniors. Confused? So were we — at first. The change was made so that the Seniors could hold their last dance in June, the customary time for the Junior Prom, and still be able to use the profit usually made by a Senior sponsored dance for the Senior Trip. Seniors and Juniors alike were enthusiastic about the switch. It promises to encourage inter-class co-operation, and perhaps to become a Glen Cove tradition. Mr. Barteau and friend guard the money box. No matter what we do, it still looks like a gym. PROFILE PRESENTS . . . THE CLASS OF 1961 The Senior Class of 1961 had a good year. While they were sorry to lose their president. Bob Lightfoot, who moved to Washington, D.C., early this year, they accomplished much under the capable leadership of their new president, Peggy Gorman. Dotty Buonincontri, as secretary of the class, kept the minutes at all the class meetings, while Marge Schwarz, treasurer of the class, did a very efficient job of managing the financial matters. It was the hard work of these officers, plus that of the enthusiastic members of the Senior Class, which made possible a very successful senior year for the Class of '61. This year's Senior Class started off with a big magazine drive, in which all members of the class participated. Seniors who sold magazines had a lot of fun winning prizes and earning money for their class. Part of this money was used to finance the Junior Prom, which was a gala ball given by the seniors, in honor of their successors: the Class of '62. Another well-remembered project of the Class of '61 was the senior play. This year the Senior Class presented The Remarkable Incident at Carson Corners. Members of the class, aided by a very patient and hard-working Mr. Lamberson, pooled their various theatrical talents and skills. The final result was a very enjoyable production, received enthusiastically by fellow students and friends. All in all, the Class of '61 had a very memorable and wonderful year. Long will they remember the happy times they had, and the teachers and friends who helped to make their years at Glen Cove High School such cheerful ones.
