I ?W7f •4 PROFILE 1960 is the record of a school year Not a sermon or an evaluation. Years from now When we view these events with wisdom and maturity We may judge their effect. Our present humor may seem sophomorish And our pressing concerns trivial in retrospect; However, these experiences, this formative period of our lives Will have shaped our beliefs and goals markedly. We, the class of '60, graduated in a peaceful, prosperous era Overshadowed by the need for great cold war expenditures. Science and technology had moved to the fore And educational emphasis was shifting to follow these changes. Marvelous advances seemed imminent. Here, then, is our year at Glen Cove High School. . . . 4 Looking Back on 1960 We Remember: Our Faculty............................................................. 6 Our Classmates......................................................... 14 The Social Season.......................................................28 Jhe Seniors............................................................ 36 Our Activities......................................................... 68 Sports ................................................................ 84 CECELIA OSHESKE ROBERT ZUCCALA Co-Editors-in-Chief ROSALIND COLEMAN Associate Editor BARBARA COHEN Literary Editor EILEEN FLEMING Adviser ROBERT BECK CARMI BEE SUSAN BENEDICT GEOFFREY BRAUN HEATHER BURN LESLIE DOHERTY SHELLEY FARKAS LUCY FINN JOHN GILLEN PRISCILLA GREER KAREN HINCK LOIS HONEYMAN RICHARD KONOPASEK EUGENE KUNIT RONNIE KURTZ BARRY UPTON CAROLE MARKS ROBERT MARTINEZ ALAN MAURER ROBERT NASH REGINA NEILL JEAN NUGENT PAUL OSHESKE STEVE SALEMSON JOHN VENGROSKI JAMES WALZER 5 The Administration and the Faculty In a day when American education was subject to much criticism and controversy, we thank an interested School Board for their efforts to elevate the standards of our school system. A new and highly qualified Superintendent, Dr. Robert M. O'Kane, came to Glen Cove in September, 1959. He, Principal J. Cameron Maiden and Assistant Principal Carlton Bentley worked to improve the standards in Glen Cove High School. 6 HARRY BARTEAU ROBERT BASS GRACE BOTTITTO ELIZABETH BROWN ARTHUR BROWN RICHARD BROWNE JAMES BUTZ Looks like a ten-yard lossl Coaches Butz and Donald seem slightly apprehensive about the outcome of the football game with Hicks-vi lie. ARTHUR DEXTER LOUISE KEENAN VERA KEENEY HOPE KINGMAN RUTH KLEIN JOHN LAMBERSON MARILYN LAMBERSON Mr. Guernsey, who had had a distinguished career in the field of education, died after serving only a few months as a Latin teacher here. Glen Cove High School suffered a double loss this year. Mr. Miller died after being truant officer for more than forty years. He was remembered for his unflagging interest in the school and its activities. 9 JOHN LIGGERO RODERICK MacDONALD WILLIAM MULVIHILL ROSALIE MEOLA ANASTASIA MULLIN HENRY NEWTON FLORENCE OLIANSKY RUTH PERVIN Master chemists R. Some basketball fans watch the birdie rather than the game. 27 Majorette and football hero, Phyllis Smith and Walle Johanson were king and queen of the Prom. W. Shurbert, W. Squire, W. Kehoe, and K. Bergstrom chat between dances at the Junior Prom. The Social Season meant more than plays, parties and drives; the lunchroom gossip, the remarks passed while tugging books out of jammed lockers, philosophical discussions in Room 208, the private jokes of the prankish (FEZ and Horace Hastenfelter) all contributed to our developing understanding of personality and manners. The Junior Prom was the first of the important events of the year. The Social 28 Season I wonder what they put in the punch ' thinks a slightly dazed V. Rice. C. Albanese and H. Skwer dance to the music of the Stardusters. The Majorettes gather with Dr. O'Kane and Mr. Maiden to inaugurate their campaign to raise money for the Band trip. In the background a decorated drape tops the barrel into which contributions were tossed. 30 Cheerleaders and Majorettes were school celebrities, their activities spotlighted at games and assemblies. The Varsity Club and Varsity wins contributed to school spirit and fun. G. Gascon volunteers a nickel to vote in the Homecoming Queen Contest, while P. Hesse and A. Coppodona supervise. Proceeds went to the Band. Dorothy Buonincontri, the charming winner. 31 Successful players and fans gather at the Village Green after the Senior Class Victory Dance. Rapt basketball fans watch an attempted foul shot at the Mineola-Glen Cove game. Games, clubs and dances caused us to play, sing and shout in unison. Goodnaturedly warbling Frfcre Jaques, French Club initiates ore ushered into the club. Big G. Kunit and his partner M. Botwinick receive two other winners: J. Magagnos and partner, J. Dauphinee tickets to a new movie as a dancing contest prize while o°d D. Ackerly look on. The climax of the Social Season was, of course, the Senior Ball. Parents donated time and effort to transform the Neighborhood House into a nightclub. Jerry Festa, Joyce Vernillo, Mr. Palmiotto and the floor show from the Golden Slipper provided some of the entertainment while a four A.M. breakfast closed the festivities. S. Hoffman, S. Glassman, R. Brunner and partner pose with J. Vernillo who proved an enjoyable source of entertainment. 33 Cast Mrs. Stanley ............................ The club ended the year with a trip to New York to the theater and a lively meal at a French restaurant. Latin Club One of the privileges of being a member of the Latin Club was owning a slave (an unworthy freshman) for a week. These useful objects were auctioned off by senior members at initiations. At the Latin Club Banquet, the year's most important activity, toga-garbed members enjoyed Roman style feasting and entertainment. Club projects and discussions further imbued members with Roman culture. SPANISH CLUB ROW Is M. Dotil, T. Crivelli, L. Bosilo, S. Alterman, G. Abbondondolo, C. Werther, M. Glassman, A. Wessberg. Spanish Club Library Club Spanish students experimented with conversing in another language at their meetings. Their activities included a cake sale, pizza parties at Miss Meola's house, and a trip to New York to see a show and visit a Spanish restaurant. The girls of the Library Club helped many a befuddled scholar through the labyrinth of card catalogues and the Dewey Decimal System. They had fun, too, in holding their annual club tea, trip, and initiation ceremonies. The latter was less appreciated by the initiates than the initiators. 71 (1) MAJORETTES R. to L. J. Tanaka, S. When the Band members heard the thrilling news that they were invited to participate in the National Cherry Blossom Festival at Washington, D.C., they went to work immediately to raise money for the trip. They serenaded the city, held cake sales and dances, presented a concert, went from door to door selling boosters, and otherwise labored for the necessary green carpet to Washington. As usual, they provided colorful halftime entertainment at home football games, marched in local parades, and played a program at Jones' Beach on their annual outing. In the midst of this seething activity the Band found time to sharpen its technical ability in playing and marching. HONOR SOCIETY ROW 1: S. Maccorone, E. Brottenberg, J. Reynolds, A. Bencher, C. Glen Cove's National Honor Society chapter required members to have an 85 average, no mark below 65, and a record of extra-curricular activity. They received gold pins and membership cards in recognition of their high scholastic achievement. Acting as guides on Open House Night and presenting a freshman orientation assembly were their contributions to the school. The Student Advisory Council, composed of class officers and representatives of school organizations, met to discuss school problems and proposals. It served as a compromising agent between the radical suggestions of the students and the conservative thinking of the administration. Under their sponsorship the highly popular faculty-fathers basketball game was presented. N. H. S. S. A. C. S.A.C. ROW 1: M. Reukauf, D. Atkinson, E. Kunit, S. Maccorone, P. Krasko, N. Gow. ROW 2: G. Commercial Club By visiting business offices, hearing lectures by working secretaries, and practicing typing and shorthand, the girls of the Commercial Club formed a clear idea of the tasks their future careers would involve. They also held demonstrations for underclassmen and planned a trip to New York, rushing off in a flurry of shorthand notebooks and carbon paper. Chorus With an outstanding Christmas performance highlighting its assemblies, the Chorus proved to be a most harmonious part of the school's extra-curricular program. They sent a delegation to sing carols for the Kiwanis Club and rounded out the year by putting on a talent show with the Band. 75 Sell, sell, sell! intones business manager G. Grossman, as he exhorts his staff to sell more ads for PROFILE. Profile Putting the PROFILE together is a big job, as these PROFILE members can tell you. They are: A. Maurer, J. Rabkin, C. Osheske, G. Grossman, and G. Braun. Dared we hope? Could the impossible have happened? Yes, it was June, and there were stacks of black-covered books, our very own PROFILE. After a year of work and worry, the yearbook staff was somewhat amazed to find it had created a finished product. In spite of procrastination, policy disputes, and disappointments, the deadlines had been met, the photographs taken and captioned, and a coherent and orderly book created. No parents of a newborn child could have been more pleased and relieved than were we, the staff. Editors: J. Reynolds, B. Stock, J. Lerner, and V. Rodin. Tattler Our school's Boswell, otherwise known as Tattler, did its usual fine job of informing and amusing the student body. Jane Lerner and Vicki Radin, editors, and Miss Heisman, the new faculty advisor, established an editorial policy of agitation for a new school building. Along with the regular monthly issues, the paper published a Christmas supplement and a Senior Bulletin in June. The staff gained valuable journa-P. Graf, v. Rodin, B. The girls contributed these and other skills to the Library Club tea for the faculty. Style and quality of furniture, dressmaking and cooking were themes for various meetings. Confining its functions solely to charitable works, the Junior Red Cross remained a relatively quiet organization. It held an annual drive, sent a chest overseas, and filled Christmas stockings for hospital patients. JR. RED CROSS ROW 1: B. Mitchell, J. Goldberg H. Dalidowicz, K. Dakin, R. Wes-sels, S. Brown, J. This year, The Mad Woman of Chaillot was presented. The school's biggest club, nearly 200 strong, is also the wealthiest. Regular activities include a trip to New York to see a Broadway show. This year a masked ball was held for the first time and proved highly popular. The proceeds were donated to the Band's Washington trip. A Varsity Club This year, the Varsity Club, under the leadership of President Geoffrey Braun, Vice President Peter Hesse, and Secretary-Treasurer Bill Stack, was very active. Its first major activity was the promotion of a Homecoming Day football game against Port Washington and the Election of a Queen for this event. During the Basketball season the members worked very hard selling programs, Pepsi-Cola and keeping spectators off the court. In the spring, the club planned a trip to Rye Beach. Members increased their knowledge of practical science by hearing guest speakers, seeing films, and visiting industrial plants. Each person submitted a project, the best of which were entered in local competitions. Biology Club Visual aids, guest speakers, field trips and projects gave possible aspirants to the biomedical fields a more detailed picture of the area than the regular biology syllabus provides. Since many of Glen Cove's games were lost by only one or two runs, much of the team's good play did not show in the standings. Golf Team This year the golf team failed to win the league championship. This was unusual because Glen Cove Golf teams in the past have been only championship teams. Three seniors who were assets to the team were: Zeke Borum, Robin Morgan, and Howie Reynolds. As the season progressed, two juniors. Art Cag-giano and Lou Farrell also proved to be very important to the squad. Richard Mason — Up next! Who me? B. Stack, J. Francis, R. Nash, A. Wolinsky, T. Soccer Glen Cove's Varsity soccer squad showed that experience is not the most important asset a team may have. With just four of last year's squad returning, the boys proved that a little determination and hard work can accomplish a lot. They finished in third place, an improvement over last year's team, which finished fourth. The J.V. squad fought determinedly in every game, although they lacked a good won-lost record. The track meet between Glen Cove and Hicksville. Now, smile for the camera, boys! Track Last spring, the spiked shoe set, Glen Cove's track team, under Mr. Butz, could be seen making endless circles around the track, throwing the discus and shot put, and jumping both vertically and horizontally in preparation for the coming season. These practice sessions paid off in an improved won-lost record of three wins and three losses. Ray was nimble, Ray was quick, Ray jumped over the candle stick, only in this case, Ray Smith jumped over a hurdle to help Glen Cove win on important track meet. 90 G. Tanaka, J. Baade, M. Sacks. Girls’ Bowling Boys’ Bowling This year's bowling team under the tutelage of Mr. Coratti rolled its way to a winning season this year. The home matches were held at Kusky's Bowling Alleys and the sound of all the pins going down was not an uncommon one when our boys were at the line. In an exciting finale, the Varsity team shipped Plainview 69 to 62 and thus tied for the League Championship with a league record of 8 wins and 2 losses.
