SMITH — a man who devotedly served the Glen Cove School System for 27 years, came to Glen Cove High School in 1932 as a science teacher. His whole manner and method of teaching soon earned him the title of Prof Smith1' — a name affectionately coined by his chemistry and physics students. Turning to the path of educational administration, Mr. Smith occupied princi-palships in the junior and senior high schools, and in 1950, was named Superintendent of Schools. Although we tend to think of Mr. Smith as the man who closes the school on snowy days, all of us must be aware of his role in the shaping and administering of school policies. The class of 1959 fondly expresses its good wishes to Mr. Smith for his many years of service to the field of education; regretfully it bids him farewell, and happily it wishes him God-speed. The School Roster Mr. J. C. Maiden, Jr., principal, and Mr. C. H. Bentley assistant principal, at work. We take our school schedules for granted! The school calendar is a proclamation out of nowhere! The planning of assemblies, assignment of rooms, ordering of equipment are automatic occurrences—or so we think! This seemingly easy stuff IS administration and is what the administrators do. Hats off to the Board of Education and the executors, Messrs. Maiden and Bentley, for helping to make the machine work. BOARD OF EDUCATION—Front Row, left to right: Mr. J. Stack. Mrs. R. It cooks and serves delicious lunches at the lowest prices in town— G. C. rations. Division Three has the responsibility of maintaining the good health of the student body. Its sick bay is carefully tended to guard and ward off any unwelcome invaders. Division Four has permanent orders to keep the area in tip-top shape well oiled, well cleaned, and functioning. Its efforts have enabled our school to pass inspection every time. We salute this meritorious Corps. OFFICE STAFF—Left to right: Miss Varrlchlo. Mrs. Ivers, Mrs. Jensen. Mrs. Trousdell. The Diamond Led by their coach, Mr. Lamberson, and by their All Scholastic pitcher, Harry Rapelje, Glen Cove's Baseball teams set out upon another season of diamond antics. Their season, although not blessed with a winning record, was considered successful. This was because we held victories over St. Mary's, Great Neck, Garden City, and Port Washington, all old time rivals. The Covers spirit and fine sense of fair play, gave our school a fine reputation for sportsmanship and athletic ability throughout Nassau County. We can look forward to successful teams in the future because our J. Vees showed the fighting spirit and winning ability which is typical of Glen Cove High School Baseball teams. W. At the season's start, there were great expectations, in view of the previous championship performance. This year, however, due to the loss of vital manpower, our relay team fell short. Borum lets go from the floor as Wheatley opponents fail to frustrate a set shot. Glen Cove had to drink a bitter brew this season. However, some of the bitterness of defeat was erased when the Covers beat old rivals, Great Neck and Port Washington. It was a tight race for most of the season, but suddenly the bottom fell out from under the Covers. Though they lost several games by either one or two points, league standings, unfortunately, are not determined by the quality of the play, but the quantity of wins. 30 VARSITY BASKETBALL 1958-1959—Front Row, left to right: W. Pep rallies, led by the cheerleaders, serve to bolster school spirit. Not only do we have cheerleaders, but also a high stepping chorus line. Even Glen Cove High School wasn't safe from the Hula Hoop craze as the chorus line, directed by Mrs. Verando, a former Rockette, displayed their antics at half-time. As such, it represents the elite of our sports world. The white-sweatered athletes are seen at basketball games, making sure that half-time doesn't mean a stampede. Cheering for a victory can make a spectator mighty thirsty, so, the men with the big G came to the rescue by dispensing soda at home games. Photography Club A. Margolis. A. Rhodes, end B. Winters intellectualizing a trifle after lunch. The auditorium—a long view. The photography club has character. Its members roam the by-ways and nooks and crannies of Glen Cove High School in search of human interest material. Seen below are some examples of the skill of these technicians. Jr. Red Cross Give to help others is the motto of this organization. The entire student body chalked up a 100% enrollment in the Junior Red Cross, which sent a check for $103.32 to the county treasurer. In January, the Children s Book Drive brightened the hopes of young convalescents at Community and St. Francis Cardiac Hospitals and, in the spring, a chest was shipped overseas with school supplies and toys for children in disaster areas. Thus does the Junior Red Cross give evidence of being one of the school's most worthwhile organizations. Before order Is called at the faculty meeting, the teachers chat a little. J. Le magnifique” Parisian Prom transformed the gym into a setting from the Land of Joan of Arc, while an eating spree at an authentic French restaurant ended the Gallic activities for the year. Amby Grossman and Carole Rose, vice-president and president, of the French Club, discuss plans prior to the start of a meeting. Very little changed except for the fact of membership in the National Honor Society. Indeed, service to the school and student body is still the aim of our mental athletes. For example, on Parent’s Night, many a bewildered parent was directed through the halls by a guide from the National Honor Society, while at the Freshman Assembly, new students were oriented regarding the extra-curricular program of our school. Membership in the National Honor Society is an incentive to scholastic achievement for those who work hard. Vice President Amby Grossman distributes the tri-colour pins to French I members, P. Stutz, J. Tanaka, W. Squire. K. Harris, and P. Greer at an orientation meeting. El cerculo espanol is the little niche where Iberian culture is preserved. Some colorful products of this culture were displayed, by the club, in the library. At the Christmas party where every senor and senorita had a swing” at the seasonal pmato, one could almost feel the vibrant atmosphere heavy with Spanish folkways. Spanish Club Fellowship and good cheer abound as members of the Club exchange the greetings of ' Feliz Navidadas. Sylvia Maccarone and Bonnie Reinhard are not wondering if the cake tastes good. They're thinking of the receipts for the Spanish Club. Latin Club I’ve just been bid 20 drachmas for this healthy, industrious slave. On Rome's birthday, April 21, the Roman banquet was concluded by auctioning off Latin I students as slaves. Saturnalia, otherwise known as Christmas, was celebrated with a party. But all was not gaiety where these Romans were concerned. Two medals, of silver and bronze, were awarded this year to the duo showing excellence in Latin.
