I hese editors are trained to run the paper and to assume full responsibility in the spring. The TATT LER is self-supporting and hence, students sell advertising space to help pay for the paper. I he sale of advertising, the writing and editing of articles, and the circulation and distribution of TAT TLER all combine to give many students a good idea of the workings of a modern newspaper. T his “TATI LER Training’’ has borne fruit on many college, weekly, and daily newspapers. The Library Club helps to fill that need. The members devote at least one period a week to the library, putting books away on the shelves, doing desk work, and offering assistance to other students when it is needed. The club bolds two social functions during the year. One is the annual party at which new members are initiated into the club. The other, a faculty-student tea is held in conjunction with the Home Economics Club. At the tea there is opportunity for the students and faculty to meet each other informally. LIBRARY CLUB Officers: D. Golcr. Vice-President; P. Renaldo, Secretary; D. Nicholson. President; C. Trolla, Treasurer. ALPHA SOCIETY T. Miller. President; W. Hodman. Vice-President; R. Di kic. Secretary. Alpha Society Loretta McNamara. Advisor. There are two main requirements for membership in the Alpha Society — high scholastic standing, and participation in extra-curricular activities. The two highlights of the ‘ Alpha year are the Alpha Assembly in September and the Alpha Dinner given for Alpha members by the faculty and the Board of Education. This year the officers are: Ted Miller. President: Bill Hedman. Vice-President; and Roberta Dickie, Secretary. 1 o be a member of Alpha is truly a great honor for which all students should strive. [49] Masquers and The Masquers are kept constantly on the go. In December of each year they present a full length play which is eagerlv awaited by a large portion of Glen Cove. This year s presentation, I he Show-off. was a rollicking comedy about the twenties. Later in the year, the Masquers take a trip into the city to see a Broadway plav. Membership in Masquers includes not only would-be actors and actresses, but also those interested in costume design, makeup, and stage crew. Members who have earned ten credits are eligible to join the National Thespians, 1 roupe 41. [50] Thespians Latin Club A valuable insight to Roman civilization and culture is gained through membership in the Latin Club — an organization which is both interesting and informative. It is comprised of Latin students who have shown themselves to be outstanding in classwork, and have maintained at least an 85% average. Sponsored by Mrs. Shenton, the club holds an annual Roman Banquet. 1 he members, dressed in togas, eat Roman food, play Roman games, and in general re-create the Roman way ol life — even if ordy for one evening. 1 his year, they also presented a play. Death of a Roman. Unlike most clubs, they do not have a President. Instead, they are truly Romans and elect two consuls as their major oflicials and have also Quaestors, Aediles, Praetors, 1 ribunes and Pro-consuls. Spanish Club One of tlie highlights of the year is the annual Spanis h-French Club Christmas party. Both clubs provide entertainment for the evening. I he Spanish Club s contribution is the breaking of the pinata, an old custom in Spain. In the past year, the Spanish Club was visited by a representative of the Latin-American Institute who spoke on ‘The Opportunities in the Linguistic Field. T he Club offers an opportunity to those interested to learn some ol the colorful history and customs of Spain. French Club Le Cercle Francais Members of the French Club all agree that theirs is one of the more pleasant ways of learning about life in a foreign country. The French Club belongs to the Franco-American Association and receives slides, films and various displays showing some facets of French life and countryside. The Parisian Prom' is put on by the French students annually and has grown to be one of the school s most popular events. 1 hen, each year the members try to do something a little different in the way of a club trip. Last year they included a dinner at a small French restaurant noted for its Callic charm. This year the advanced students attended a performance of Le Comedie Francais. Due to the huge popularity of the French Club, it has been subdivided into a Senior French Club and a Junior French Club. Membership is open to all who take French; French I students, however, must maintain an average of 85% to remain in the club. JUNIOR COMMERCIAL CLUB Commercial Clubs All commercial students are eligible to join either the Junior or Senior Commercial Club. The Junior Club is sponsored by Mr. MacDonald and is open to freshmen and sophomores. Miss Van Eman sponsors the Senior group which is for juniors and seniors. During the year the members enjoy field trips to local business establishments and also have guest speakers. SENIOR COMMERCIAL CLUB Biology Club Each year the Biology Club holds an old-fashioned ’ box supper. 1 he gaily wrapped boxes usually contain fried chicken and chocolate layer cake. After the last crumb has been eaten, the tables are pushed back and an impromptu dance is held. In the spring, the club goes on a field trip to nearby woods to collect specimens. Sometime in May, they crawl out of their field clothes, don their best, and go to New York to visit the Museum of National History and see a play. Members of the club are Biology students who have maintained the average of 85%. [56] Home Economics Club The Home Economics Club, under the direction of Mrs. CoIIigan, is a comparatively new organization in Glen Cove High School. In order to become a member, a girl must maintain an average of 85% or better in Home Economics. 1 he purpose of its meetings is to provide its members with a social hour combined with discussions on subjects of interest related to Home Economics. During the year, the club goes on several field trips and sponsors a cake sale. Also included in its many activities is an annual trip to New York to see a Broadway play. I he informal meetings are held once a week at which time the members either participate in tournaments or just play among themselves. Also, some members enter the finals in the Inter-Scholastic Chess League ol Nassau County and many other contests which are held throughout the school year. I he Photography Club usually meets twice a month during the ninth period. Attendance is required at every meeting. Under the sponsorship ol Mr. Gehde. stimulating discussions concerning the improvement ol camera technique and film development are held for the benefit ol the members. The members are encouraged to enter national photographic contests sponsored by such companies as Eastman Kodak. I he interest stimulated by these contests may in the near future lead to a prize winning photograph. Photography Club Visual Education Squad In addition to the usual textbooks, the students of Glen Cove High receive an assist with their learning through the efforts of the Audio Visual Squad. Most of us agree that motion pictures make learning a lit tie easier and more delightful. We are grateful to Miss Dosch and her squad lor their help in imparting to us a better understanding of difficult topics. There are no specific requirements for membership and new members are trained each year. The Band is one of the most valuable organizations to a school and Glen Cove is no exception. 1 he Band lends color to our assemblies, football games, and local parades. Glee Club Under the direction of Mrs. Gilmore, the chorus has been a very-popular activity this past year. 1 he Christmas program, which is the musical highpoint of the year, was one of the most successful ever presented. The Chorus has a selection of activities for the enjoyment of its members. T hese include a party and a vearlv trip. The Choraleers are a select group within the Glee Club. I hey went into the tournament with high hopes, but after a ten game winning streak, lost to Lynnbrook in the first game ol the tournament. With good school spirit and wonderful team work, our team brought pride to itself and to Glen Cove High School. [69] Baseball The cry “Batter-up!”; the sound of a bat coming into solid contact with a ball; the deep roar of excitement that rises from the crowd — all these can mean only one thing. Baseball season is here again. The warm weather of this spring was the signal for Mr. Mould and Mr. Donald to start holding conferences and pep-talks with the usual fine results. The entire team benefited by the return of a few “old veterans — Frank Racanelli, Greg Corozzo, Bill Mathieson and Tom Poole. The boys on the team certainly deserve all the praise they received this year. Every member exhibited fine sportsmanship and was a credit to the school.
