As the hive is the center of activity for bees so has Glen Cove High School been the center of our lives. Here we have progressed along the path that leads from adolescence to adulthood. Like the bees we have had our workers, drones, and Queens. Through the co-operation of all we have built up a host of memories to cherish throughout life, and we have gained the most valuable possession on earth, an education. To remind us of our teachers, classes, dances, clubs, sports, and all our other undertakings we will have the esteemed object of every senior, the pictorial review of our high school years, the PROFILE. In contrast to the bee hive which is closed to outsiders, the doors of our school stand open for all who wish to enter and learn. Within are the tools used to build a happy life, knowledge and friendship. We, who have had access to these powers, wish to show here what we have achieved with them. DEDICATION We the Class of 1954, humbly dedicate our year book, the PROFILE, to the memory of Mr. George M. Kuhn, who passed away on June 4, 1953 after twenty-five years of faithful service to our school. Great character, courage and infinite patience typified this man. Mr. Kuhn was respected by all who knew him, and with his passing the Class of 1954 lost a beloved friend and leader. 5 Walter R. Smith Superintendent J. Ronny and Ruth being crowned king and queen. 41 Swi n 'SaCC On December 18, the class of 1954 held its Senior Ball. The theme of this terrific dance was Winter Rhapsody. The gym was so bee-utifully decorated that it was hard to recognize. Standing in the center of the gym was a bright red sleigh with pine boughs and snow around it. On the walls hung beautiful murals and boosters in the form of snow flakes, stars, and snowmen. The outstanding event of the evening was the picking of our king, Ronnie Doran and queen, Ruth Hart-meyer. The red sleigh served as a throne. Everyone who attended this gala ball agrees it was the best one, and certainly a tribute to the Senior Class and the hard working committee. Dancing under the stars. King and Queen reward each other. 42 43 When do we start, Mr. Herman?” Scenes From the Variety Show Nancy Jane Evans and Diana Gypson, Sue Rosenberg, and Bob Shaddock. ANNIE GET YOUR GUN The Senior play is one of the most outstanding occasions of High School Life. Once again the cast members of the Class of 1954 spent long hours in practice and preparations for the presentation of ANNIE GET YOUR GUN. The play centered around a hillbilly called Annie who lived in Darke County, Ohio. Annie met and fell in love with Frank Butler, who was the best sharp shooter in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. Annie proved to be a better marksman than Frank but found it to her advantage to lose with her guns in order to win with Frank. Mention must be made of the fine directing of Mr. Bentley and the excellent music composed by Paul Singer. The Senior Class can well be proud of this production which proved to be a sensational success. The PROFILE Staff consists of six different di- visions. They include the literary, advertising, art, photography, transcription, and circulation staffs. With the wonderful assistance of Miss Hogg, the Class of 1954 edited a yearbook that will be the treasured possession of every senior. LITERARY STAFF First row, left to right: R. Siemin-ski, F. Under the able supervision of their Queen Bee, Miss Quilty, the busy bees on the TATTLER staffs work hard to publish a paper well worth reading. The TATTLER is an activity to which many people may belong. The literary staff reports on news and sports and are also given a chance to prove their originality by writing feature columns. The art staff draws cartoons, and a student photographer covers the picture taking. The advertising staff manages to secure ads from local merchants to help finance the paper. The girls of the Secretarial Practice Course get a bit more practice by typing TATTLER copy, and many others participate in the circulation of the paper. First row, 'left to right: S. Florsheim, D. CIRCULATION STAFF TRANSCRIPTION STAFF For the benefit of high school camera fans, Glen Cove High boasts a Photography Club, which is open to all students interested in photography. Under the sponsorship of Mr. Gehde, the club usually meets two ninth periods a month. Regular attendance is required. The club is dedicated to the purpose of advancing and improving many camera techniques. Through practical demonstration and discussion, the members learn about such things as developing and printing. This year, the club is also sponsoring a contest among the members, the object of which is to select the best photo which is entered. Photography Club in Action. Bees hibernate in the winter but not the Glen Cove High School Masquers. Between presenting plays for assemblies and their annual evening production, they are kept busy all year round. Students who are interested in the theater, .whether it be acting or technical work, may try out for Masquers. A member who has obtained ten credits through participation in the club's activities becomes a member of the National Thespian Society, Troupe 41. Each year the Masquers go to New York to see a Broadway play; the whole club anxiously looks forward to that occasion. This year's evening performance was the production of Harvey.” As a result of the expert direction of Mr. Carlton H. Bentley, sponsor of the Masquers Society, the play was a great success. Why, the Visual Education Squad, of course. Under the able leadership of Queen Dosch, the students of Glen Cove High School have the advantage of the modern method of education —learning through motion pictures as well as textbooks. The members of the Visual Education Squad are taught to operate and repair the school’s projection equipment in order to bring the best possible showing of pictures. One need not have an extensive knowledge of motion picture projectors in order to become a member. New members are taught a fundamental knowledge of the projector each year in order to replace the graduating members. Films make learning easier. 'P'imcA (?lu The French Club is a veritable hive of activity this year. Miss Reichert, the sponsor, made many plans, both social and cultural. One of the most exciting was the spring dance the club held, which took the form of a scene in Paris. The club also dined at a French restaurant. Another interesting fact about the club is that all the meetings are conducted in French. Though this sometimes leads to confusion, the members enjoy it, since it helps to improve accents and vocabulary. It is very evident that members of the Library Club help to make our library a pleasure to enter, as can be seen by many students in the library reading or doing reference work. The Library Club holds two social functions, namely the annual initiation party- and the faculty tea, which everyone eagerly awaits. At the tea, many new books of interest to the students and faculty, are exhibited. This is also an opportune time for students and faculty to meet each other in an informal manner. Members Entertain Faculty at Tea. HfiAa Society The Alpha Society is made up of the outstanding students of Glen Cove High School. They are chosen for both their scholastic ability and for their participation in school activities. With the help of Miss McNamara, faculty advisor of Alpha, the organization sponsors three important events during the year. They are the orientation assembly, the annual dinner in June and the initiation party. Alpha members indeed are busy bees. Membership in the Alpha Society is a coveted award. It is a symbol of hard work and good citizenship. With a little added effort many more people could share the honor of being Alpha members. @lci Looking through the portals of 117 during the ninth period, one may find a group of students who comprise the Spanish Club. Under the supervision of Miss Reichert, these students play Spanish games, sing Spanish songs, take part in Spanish plays and keep themselves busy as Spanish bees (abejas espanolas). Each year this club has a Christmas party, and this year its members also took a trip to New York City to See a Spanish movie and dine in a Spanish restaurant. The activities of this club are both entertaining and educational. Fun and frolic at the Commercial Club Christmas party. The Commercial Club is associated with the commercial students of Glen Cove High. It is divided into the Junior and Senior groups. The Juniors consist of Freshmen and Sophmores sponsored by Mr. MacDonald. The Seniors consist of Juniors and Seniors sponsored by Miss Van Fman. During the school year, the club enjoys trips to local business concerns, and social events. They also discuss many business topics at their meetings. To be a member of the club a student must have an average of 80% or more. The club holds an annual box supper and goes on field trips to gather specimens for use in the laboratory. Each club member must complete a project by the end of the year. Many of these are exhibited at the Science Congress at Adelphi College. •datm Under the able direction of Miss Murphy, a great number of students participate in the Latin Club's activities. Among these is the Roman Banquet which is enjoyed immensely. At this banquet, the students of this modern civilization are taken back to ancient Rome via clothes, food, and entertainment. Another activity of the Latin Club is to send huge boxes of clothing to Korea for its poverty-stricken, war-torn inhabitants, totalling 52 pounds this year. Surely it’s quite clear that the Latin Club is a hardworking organization which gives its life-giving honey to those in need of it. @lu One of the most enjoyable activities in Glen Cove High School is the Chess Club, which is under the capable supervision of Miss Keeney. The Chess Club affords many hours of diversion for those students who possess the will power to conquer the strategic game of chess. During the meetings, students join in either playing chess or in watching the game in progress which aids the students to interpret the game better. A bright spot in the football picture was Vincent Madden, a very promising Frosh. 'I'his year Glen Cove High displayed its best basketball team record since the 1942-43 season. The team, while losing only eight games out of eighteen starts, remained a constant threat to opposing ball clubs. I he season was highlighted by twro wins over Parmingdale, NSAL eastern division championship, and one decision from Mineola, the North Shore champions. The team closed the season with five wins and five losses holding down fourth place in league play. I he major difference this year was the improvement in teamwork. The boys functioned more smoothly together than in past seasons. William MacLeod, the captain, received honorable mention in All-Scholastic voting. The starting five usually consisted of Will MacLeod, Joe Kleckowski, Joe Panetta, Stan Zabielski, and Red Schiotz. They were aided by Dick Nelson, Bert Dunlap, Adrian Hersey, Ron Thorsen, John Lapid, and Gus Abbondondola. The boys on the team give most credit to their coach Duncan Donald. The marked improvement in school spirit was also a great aid to the team’s success. Dedicating the plaque in memory of Mr. Kuhn. Under the leadership of Miss Schmitz and Mrs. Famigletti, the girls learn good sportsmanship and the ability to work with other people. These are most important for good citizenship. This year the teams’ only regret is that they didn’t make more bee lines for the basket. They all heartily agree that the friends made through their games will long be remembered. 'PUy t On May 7, 1954 the Senior Class presented their annual Senior Sports night. Many Seniors spent their ninth periods buzzing in the gym in preparation for this important event. The boys and girls displayed their skill in many gymnastic talents which they had acquired during their four years of high school. The Red and Green teams competed against each other in such events as volleyball, basketball, and some humorous and obstacle relay races. Both boys and girls showed excellent form in calisthenics, tumbling, and apparatus work. A highlight on the program was a tug-of-war between the boys. Last but not least, was an exhibition of ballroom dancing which included a tango and a rhumba. Coming Through the Rye.
