Text from Pages 1 - 108 of the 1950 volume:

pan m PUBLISHED BY •fils urillOii CU) j5 LILEjJ miUJ6H iiliflOOi lit fmisiumiD The pages of the PROFILE unfold as an album, meant to evoke pleasant memories for its readers. Much in this book will be reminiscent of the first half of the 1900’s — the cars we drive, the songs we sing, the way we wear our hair. For the parents and friends of the Class of 1950, this album should bring to mind their own unforgetable school days; for underclassmen, it should preview much of the joy they can look foreward to in their own senior year; for the seniors themselves, it should be a living reminder of all that high school meant to them. We now stand at the half century mark — fifty years characterized by the most accelerated progress the world has ever seen. In this era of surging advancement, Glen Cove High School has been no exception. Modern buildings, new equipment, and improved methods are but a few of the many evidences of educational progress in our school. With these thoughts in mind, imagine the great possibilities for education in our public schools during the next half century! The school will become the all-important hub of the huge wheel of advancement. The school, whether the most up-to-date building or merely a little red school house, will be the inspiration for noble achievements yet to come. Against this background of phenomenal progress, we give you the 1950 PROFILE, a pleasant mixture of past, present and future. 4 Dsuj rrjM] w. We, the Class of 1950, humbly dedicate this issue of the Profile” to the memory of our late Superintendent, Mr. Eugene J. Gribbin, who passed away on January 10, 1950, after thirty-three years of devoted service to the Glen Cove Schools. This man of great character, determination and courage had the faculty of transmitting these qualities to those whom he taught in the classroom and coached on the playing field. The driving spirit which characterized his gridiron work, was equaled only by his supervision and leadership of our entire school system. His friendly manner and unselfish ways earned him the love and respect of all who knew him. With Mr. Gribbin’s passing, the Class of 1950 lost a beloved leader, and the world, a fine person. But his memory will linger, for in him was found all that typifies the best in Glen Cove High School. 5 1949 FOOTBALL DINNER Walter R. Smith Superintendent J. Our skirts may have been a little shorter, our school curriculum a little more advanced, but the excitement of entering high school has not dimmed with the years. The thrill of becoming recognized around school, the exciting adventure of making new friends, are experiences we shared with our parents and grandparents. Their Junior Prom was no less thrilling to them then our own successful one was in our eyes. In short, life’s best years, now as fifty years ago, are our school years. Seniors in 1900 and seniors in 1950 worked and played in much the same way to make high school a truly wonderful experience. Thus, in our album, we picture classes of 1950 — a distinctive product of the twentieth century. XTIVITUv As we leaf further through our album, memories of exciting activities come flooding back. For Grandma, it may be the recollection of a graceful waltz, while Mother may remember a snappy Charleston and we think fondly of our Cinderella Senior Ball and Saturday night dances in the gym. As the old-timers re-live vaudeville and minstrel shows, our album is full of pictures recalling the Senior Play, Masquer’s dramatic productions, and various club skits. The 1950 Glee Club is our challenge to the Barber-Shop Quartets of yester-year; our band would put famed Alexander’s Ragtime to shame. The class of 1950 is proud of the activities in which they participated, and they cherish many unforgettable memories of the fun these activities offered. Grandma, think of the decorous fun of your youth; Mother, wistfully recall your days as a flapper, as you see pictured activities in Glen Cove High — 1950 Style. Mflii sail SENIOR BALL COMMITTEE Friday, December 2, 1949, was a big day for Glen Cove High School. Throughout the day, boys were seen running through the halls in blue jeans; hammers and string in their hands; and girls were found running around with their hair up in kerchiefs; crepe paper in hand. This describes the daylight scene. With the setting of the final scene, there came a complete transformation. The gymnasium had been turned into a palace ballroom; all of royalty were there. Handsome, gallant dukes and barons escorted their gay ladies through an evening of fun and excitement. The dim lights reflected on the swirling skirts until the magic moment, when everything became still, and Priscilla Smith was crowned Cinderella” with Fred Broccolo as a handsome ' Prince Charming. This was a night-of-nights to be long remembered by all who were there. w Bottom to top: Chairmen: J. Donaldson and C. Capobianco, C. Germain, C. Maxwell, J. Czarnecki, B. Wansor, J. Katz, B. Maybe that is why everyone in the audience lived and loved every scene. To add to its realism, the play seemed perfectly cast, and thanks to Miss Cahill’s capable direction and Miss Keenan and the backstage crew, this real-life dramatization was a complete success. The Alpha Society, under the direction of Miss McNamara, is comprised of those students who, we believe, will be leaders of tomorrow. However, they also contribute their share of making school functions a success; and are rewarded for their efforts by the annual Alpha dinner. Maintaining a high average and participating in school affairs is a full-time job. Every student works toward the Alpha Society as his goal in school. With the aid of Glen Cove High School’s highly esteemed Alpha Society, the wheels of progress cannot help but push ahead. m iJBMfly fiuiD Books have played an important part in the progress of the past fifty years, for they carry a realm of knowledge far and wide. Our library has an abundant supply of books, which are kept in order by the Library Club, a group of about fifty students who work under the supervision of our librarian, Miss DuBois. The members of this club devote much of their spare time toward keeping the library functioning efficiently. They offer such services as checking in new books and magazines, doing desk work, and shellacking books. Several members of the club are always on hand to offer assistance to anyone who may need it. Due to the efforts of Miss DuBois and her Library Club, we have found the library one of the most pleasant places in the school. Officers: President, N. Bern; Vice-President, P. Barker; Secretary, K. Masquers gives students splendid opportunities to take part in all phases of theatrical productions. In the fall, those desiring membership in this society must recite before the members of the club and the club's sponsor, Miss Cahill. The Thespian Society of Glen Cove, which is Troupe No. 41 of the National Thespian Society, is composed of experienced members of Masquers who have earned ten points or more based on actual participation in any phase of play production. Our Spanish Department helps promote friendship between the two continents. It is composed of two clubs. The Tertulia Es-panola combines business with pleasure in presenting assembly programs and short plays for its meetings and by playing Spanish vocabulary games. On Columbus Day, this club occasionally takes a trip to New York and visits the Hispania Society Museum and Library and the Metropolitan Museum where they study Spanish art and literature. A Christmas party is an annual event of both clubs in joint session. In the beginners’ club, or Trovadores, students learn folk songs of South America and popular carols. This club holds an annual meeting dedicated to Pan American Day, representing the Organization of American States as it actually functions. It demonstrates Inter-Americanism and hemispheric solidarity. 53 i r ilrlT $JcTaL Officers: President, T. Domagala; Vice-President, V. Anderson; Secretary. M. Bernstein; Treasurer, N, Blake: Sponsor. Through the French Club, it is possible to learn more about them, especially the French. This organization holds meetings and gives numerous parties. It presented a play which was given at assembly for the enjoyment of the whole school. Another activity enjoyed by the French Club is the yearly trip to New York to see an opera. The French Club accomplishes much and has fun doing it. j)m fiiUB Although Latin is known as a dead language, we all realize that the great benefits derived from the Latin language will never die. We can readily observe this even in the middle of the twentieth century by first noticing the vast number of students participating in the Latin Club’s activities. Under the supervision of Miss K. Murphy, the Club members often find time to enjoy ancient Roman festivities, such as the Roman Banquet, at which time the Club members dress in Roman clothes, enjoy Roman food, and engage in Roman entertainment. In 1930, the first club was established with a membership of twenty. Now at the turn of the half centry, there is a combined membership of one hundred ten, under the sponsorship of Miss Van Eman and Mrs. Rabinowitz. The club is divided into two groups — one consisting of Freshmen and Sophomores, the other Junior and Seniors. Their varied program of activities includes field trips, business meetings and two evening social meetings. During the current year, the club presented an amusing assembly program, dramatizing the duties of a secretary. Officers: President, W. Cresser; Vice-President, M. Sofield; Secretary, H. In Glen Cove High School, we consider photography so important that a club has been formed to teach developing techniques to shutter-bug” fans. Mr. Ghede directs the members and supervises many of their projects. Samples of their work appear on many pages of this album. 57 mmi fiiuB Officers: President, M. Goodman; Vice-President, R. They were certainly not as interesting and as active as our classes are. In order to become a member of the Biology Club, a student is expected to maintain an average of 85 per cent throughout the year, and he is also required to complete a project by the end of the second semester. The club participates in field trips, projects, and laboratory experiments. This year one of the projects was the collection and pressing of leaves. On February 11, the club held a very successful and interesting dinner-dance. They planned a box supper at which box lunches were raffled off. Every year the members of the club make it a point to visit the Brookhaven Laboratory, the Genetics Laboratory, and the Museum of Natural History. Throughout the year they also go on numerous field trips. 58 Movies have come a long way since the early flickers. They have progressed to such importance in recent years, that they have become a supplement to text-book teaching in schools. For this reason, our Visual Education Squad was born. Its purpose is to train students to repair and operate the school’s projection equipment. Visual Education members aid in various teaching programs by showing entertaining films dealing with numerous school subjects. What a delightful, modern way to learn! Directors: R. Murray, G. Petchok. 59 BAND Music in the last 50 years at Glen Cove High School has been one of its outstanding assets. This year our sixty-piece band, under the brilliant direction of George Scott, has progressed throughout the year to become a truly great organization. During the Fall season our band, flashing the red and green, marched onto the football field at the games, playing stirring marches and greatly increasing the spirit and enthusiasm of our rooters. In winter the musicians presented many concerts to the public as well as to the school. These concerts were composed chiefly of pieces which were favorites of the past few years. The main event of the Spring season was the Memorial Day Parade, when our band led the Senior class majestically through our city. A wonderful climax for the successful year of the Band was its trip to Jones Beach. The Orchestra, which is a select group of students from the Band, played at assemblies, dances, the Senior Play, and Commencement Exercises. In its midst the Band has an exclusive and much-admired group of girls, the drum majorettes, headed by high-stepping Edith Post. Many of our Band members will attain great success in the field of music. We will congratulate them as they progress up the ladder just as we have congratulated them for their fine work during the year of 1950. MAJORETTES Standing, left to right: J. Marcus, M. Samoske, D. No half-century album would be complete without reference to the modern evolution of music; just as no album picturing Glen Cove High School would be complete without mention of-the Glee Club. Although our Glee Club has not accompanied music’s transition all the way from the waltz to swing, jazz, the blues and finally to be-bop, they do present to us, the best songs that live from each musical era. Under the able direction of Mrs. Gilmore, the Glee Club's entertaining programs feature the finest in music, most capably presented. 62 £PDRT$ One look at the sports pages of our album, and it is evident that sports are vitally important in Glen Cove High. Our atheletic program has been constantly increasing since the turn of the century so that today, Glen Cove teams are recognized in almost every field of inter-scholastic competition. Our undefeated 1949 football team is reminiscent of three others in Glen Cove’s history — those of 1931, 1932, and 1943. However, anyone who watched the team in action saw the clock turned back to their own days of passing or kicking a football, or cheering a team to victory. A wistful gleam is bound to appear in the eyes of past heroes of the basketball court, the soccer field or the baseball diamond as they view the successful 1950 teams wearing the red and green colors. The 1949 Championship Football team of Glen Cove High School had an excellent record of eight wins and no ties. This is the fourth team during the first half of the twentieth century which has had a perfect season. The team was outstanding on both its offensive and defensive plays, not only because every man displayed such fine spirit and teamwork, but also because it was coached splendidly by Ziggy” Nedwick and Joseph Lamas. George Spellman and Co-Captain Lou” Britt, Glen Cove’s Touchdown Twins,” were the sparks of the team. The hard blocking of All-American” Richard Fanning and the co-operation of James Jones, Eddie” Orski and Jit” Stemkow-ski completed the Cover’s” backfield. The forward wall consisted of John Zimmerman, Ward Gypson, Co-Captain Big John” Bertone, Ken” Danis, Rock” Britt, John Farnan, Ron” Coleman, Alex Jones, Carl Muller, and Tony” Szymanski. The team resumed its traditional gridiron battle with Hempstead this year. This game was climaxed with the presentation of the Chapman Memorial Bell to the victorious Glen Cove eleven.” The bell will be awarded to the winning team each year for the next fifty years. The team could not have been what it was without the diligence of the coaches, the second eleven, and the managers, Davis Ross, Morris Cantor, and Norman Wilson. 68 «JS “OTONE A„.Scbola i‘ T«U‘ ,OHN WMMERMAN All.Scb°l ““ Gm All.b etr°P0 ''tatt A S boUuic EnJ SCORES Glen Cove 19 Baldwin 6 Glen Cove 44 Chaminade 19 Glen Cove 37 Lawrence 0 Glen Cove 37 Mineola 0 Glen Cove 12 Curtis 0 Glen Cove 31 Great Neck 0 Glen Cove 45 Port Washington 13 Glen Cove 33 Hempstead 20 RONALD COLEMAN OjV KENNETH DANIS H«H. The games were characterized by good sportsmanship and an abundance of school spirit. Rawlings Walton, who showed great ability in his allround playing was high scorer for Glen Cove this year and also achieved Nassau County All-Scholastic honors. Other outstanding players of the year were the Captain, Vincent Frigeria, and team members — Teddy” Baade, Donald Kinnear, Larry” O’Rourke, Paul Morris, and Sheldon Smolokoff. This team, which showed much promise for future years, is composed of members of the Freshman and Sophomore classes. They had competition equal to that of the Varsity team and were able to win an average of 50% of their games. The two teams were under the expert guidance of Mr. Bongiorno and Mr. Newton, who coached the Varsity and Junior teams, respectively. Many thanks are due also to Ronald Coleman, head manager, and Chick” Bachelor, assistant manager, for their constant assistance and devotion to the teams. First row, left to right: R. Nevesky, D. Anderson, E. Mrozek, H. Peckman, W. Standinger, Honorary Captain; H. Repeta, R. Stewart, W. Anderson. Second row, left to right: L. Oporto, J. Childs, R. Cassaro, F. Albergo, R. Smith, V. Mellisa, W. Kinnear. Third row, left to right: H. Sudholz, E. Minsky, P. DiGuardia, M. Wiedhammer, J. Podwol, J. Doran, F. Martinez, K. Seaman, J. C. Maiden, Coach; H. Newton, Coach. The twentieth century cannot claim to have given use to the old-time game of soccer, but the sport is a distinctive new member of Glen Cove’s athletic program. Since Glen Cove has not had a soccer team since 1947, most of the players were new to the game. From the very first match, however, they all played like veterans. By the end of the season, and thanks to the able coaching of Mr. Maiden and Mr. Newton, the squad has produced a host of valuable players, three of whom made All Scholastic: Donald Anderson, Stephen Kolakovsky and Henry Rcpeta. These scenes may revive memories for past soccer stars, who would surely be proud of the skill and fine sportsmanship displayed by the 1949-50 team. It is still a proud moment when a boy receives his letter — pride increased by the prestige the green G carries. That is why membership in the Lettermen’s Club is so coveted, being open only to boys who have earned their award. This exclusive club is sponsored by Mr. George Kuhn. The Senior members receive white sweaters on which to sport their letter, — the MG” they wear so proudly. OFFICERS Left to right: M. Wesley, Vice President; J. Bertone, President; J. Spellman, Secretary. Not pictured: J. Zimmerman, Treasurer; Mr. Kuhn, Sponsor. umn mm lumrr The annual Senior Sports Night, combining the gymnastic talents of both the Senior girls and boys, provided one of the last opportunities to see the Class of 1950 in action. The colorful entrance of the Red and Green teams was followed by such competitive sports as Basketball and Volleyball. Tumbling and Apparatus work, plus the amusing relays, truly showed the talents of the class. Following a custom that began long before the start of this century, several boys and girls waltzed to a reminiscent melody. Then, keeping up with current modes, they danced the rhumba to the strains of a Latin American tune. Thus another memorable evening will long stand out in the minds of both the audience and the participants. 1 74 Clsxjf. Cru A. Biiii mi ujfjij mmv§ bouiljiib unm Center: Captain Sigrid Carlsen. How shocked the public would have been in 1900 to see twelve young damsels leaping about in colorful uniforms. Times have changed! Today our cheerleaders are a welcome and necessary part of every football and basketball game. Unending hours of practice have resulted in precision that is indeed a delight to see. These peppy girls can well be applauded for the lively school spirit found at the games. 76 Kneeling left to right: C. Salvato, R. Johnson, E. Petro-ski, C. Zollo, P. Zylko, P. Werner, J. Masone, B.
