Alma Mater Rah! for Glen Cove High School All hail lo thee. Dear Alina Mater, We will loyal be. Ever let thy glory Shine for ages long. Three cheers for Glen Cove High Will be our song — Rah! Rah! Rah! THE PROFILE CLASS OF 1949 m GLEN COVE HIGH SCHOOL Glen Cove, New York JUNE 1949 3 uovewovd In 1849, many young people left their comfortable homes in the East and struck out for the land of opportunity, the golden land of California. One hundred years later, a new crop of miners, the Class of 1949, is to be found prospecting in the treasure laden mining camp of G. C. H. S. for golden nuggets of knowledge. The 49'ers present this annual to you with the sincere desire that you become better acquainted with their prospecting camp, the foremen and the trail blazing prospectors. Since team work and organization are necessary, the 49'ers have developed a system in their quest for gold. The first task consists of dragging the golden bits of knowledge out of the multitudinous text books. This is followed by the sifting of the panned gold in order to separate the true facts from the superfluous information. The concentrated gold is then polished off. The work requires perseverance and skill and the 49’ers pitch in with willing hearts and able minds. The gold miners will spend the Fall, Winter and Spring seasons in the mining camp but when June comes, they will select different mountain trails leading toward the golden opportunities which are to be found in our American Democracy, today. To Miss Ruth J. Richardson, our Senior Advisor, who has untiringly guided our footsteps through new and difficult paths to the golden horizon of success in our high school career, we, the Class of 1949, dedicate this “Profile”. 5 THE BOARD OF EDUCATION Left to right: angelo j. martone, secretary; richardson pratt; ethel s. harrold, president; maurice cohen; paul g. On the desert breeze floats the choral melodies of the Glee Club accompanied by the stirring tunes of our Band. The Profile and Tattler tent are humming with activity as the news and remembrances we always will cherish are sorted and arranged. In the Masquers’ tent, a great drama is in progress, but the sound is muffled by the great babble of many tongues emerging from the language clubs. Typing our requests for new sifting pans and picks, the Commercial Club works feverishly in the dimming light, while the Library Club sorts the books that will keep us entertained as we sit before the camp-fire. Stopping momentarily to allow the Photography Club to record their cache, the Biology Club returns from its expedition of examining mountain flora and fauna. But soon the sun will sink completely in the west, and the work of the 49’ers will be done until the morrow calls for renewed efforts in their search of gold. SENIOR BALL fs|es When the dusty travelers reached Virginia City on tlteir westward trek, it was decided that the time was appropriate for a real social get-together. Therefore, on the evening of November 19, 1948 many brightly dressed couples could be seen whirling gaily about the village square to the cries of “Do-ce-do,” “Swing your partner,” and “Promenade!” Here and there, a couple leaned against the hitching rail of Klenkel's Livery Stable or rested on the bench in front of Congero's Blacksmith Shop. When it was already well past mid-night, good-nights were said, and the celebration began to break up. The pioneers got into their covered wagons and wended their way home with happy memories of a very enjoyable evening. Howdy, Partner! 46 Gala Affair 'VeO Ne When Good Friends Get Together Our Loyal Friends V- “THE LATE CHRISTOPHER BEAN ” Along about mid-winter the trail-weary miners decided to direct their special talent toward presentation of the Senior play. “The Late Christopher Bean” carried the prospectors back to the Eastern atmosphere of New England and proved to be just the type of comedy which suited them. I he discovery of some valuable, discarded canvasses and the ensuing scramble which centered around the maid, Abby, provided many real to life comic situations. The appreciative applause of the audience was reward enough for the hard working group of actors and back stage crew. THE ALPHA SOCIETY The Alpha Society, whose members are the topnotch forty-niners, are making great progress in their search for the gold of education. They are digging their stakes into the future with averages of 85 per cent or better in their scholastic work, which will continue to pay lifelong dividends. The Alpha Society under the direction of Miss McNamara, is also contributing to the social functions of our caravan. The reward for their untiring efforts during the year is the gala event of the Alpha dinner. The Alpha Society is indeed one of the most highly esteemed societies that has been organized along the trail. THE BIOLOGY CLUB The Biology Club is a great asset to the 49'ers, lor it is they who make a study of all the new plant and animal life we encounter on our trek for gold. Composed of the honor Biology students and guided by Mrs. McCullcy, the Club combines study with fun as is observed when their wagon goes on gay jaunts off the trail. This year the members drew up a new Constitution and next year’s caravan will be able to use their rules and regulations as they attempt to succeed in their search for the golden fruits of knowledge. LE CERCLE FRANCAIS Just as we are about to enter a large wagon, bearing colossal red letters which spell out “Le Cercle Fran ais”, we hear the French Club members singing La Marseillaise as they busily pack clothing boxes for France. Virginia Stafford is the brave young girl who leads the group for 1919. In the wagon we see the Club’s right hand man, Vice-President, Enrico Gallo, and the Secretary, Helen Warn-kcn. This Club is among the most hardworking groups of boys and girls and one result of their work is evidenced by the many letters received from France for their fine work in sending clothing packages to their less-fortunate kinsmen. Vj. • , EL CIRCULO ESPANOL As we travel through a mining town, we spy one wagon identified by the gay sign of the Spanish Club. Inside, under the leadership of our esteemed Spanish teacher, Mrs. Womack, the members are singing the final words to La Cuca-racha”, their theme song. This year the wagon boss is Barbara Dollar. Second in command is Ronald Coleman with Rosemary Reilly, treasurer, and Edith Post, the busy scribe who records the lively times that the Spanish Club members enjoy. COMMERCIAL CLUB All gold mine claims are recorded by the Commercial Club, under the capable direction of Miss Van Email. In order to avoid erroneous repetition, the club has been divided into two sections—one composed of Freshmen and Sophomores, the other of Juniors and Seniors. For the admission price of a mere grain of gold dust, members saw a movie which fully explained the duties of a secretary. Parties, lectures, and club trips comprise the social activities of the scribes of '49. 59 JUNIOR LATIN CLUB OFFICERS Seated, left to right: c. joiinson, Curilc Acdilc; J. doi.o-wicii, Curilc Acdile; a. siiemanski, Scribe; d. sc:uteri, Ouaeslor. Standing, left to right: b. o’mori, Pro-Consul; i.avery. Censor; m. oijckman, Consul; m. duncan, Curilc Acdilc. LATIN CLUB In every caravan there is a wagon load of boys and girls who are laying a line foundation for their life’s work by studying the Latin classics of Cicero, Caesar and Virgil, with the helpful guidance of Miss Murphy. These Latin scholars take time off from their cultural studies to entertain themselves with Roman festivities, such as the Saturnalia and the Roman Banquet which arc celebrated annually. At these times the Club members, dressed in the ancient Roman garb, partake of Roman food and engage in Roman entertainment. The Latin Club's wagon is called “Scnatus Populusque Romanus” and its constitution is modeled after that of the ancient Roman Republic. SENIOR LATIN CLUB OFFICERS Seated, left to right: j. si.owik. LIBRARY CLUB As the covered wagons roll along, the 49’ers spend much of their spare time in the library. A group of fifty students helps keep the library functioning efficiently. Under the supervision of Miss Du Bois, they gain practical experience in library work, as well as a wealth of golden knowledge from the books they read. Surely, the library is one of the gold mines found along the way. - OFFICERS Left to tight: iiei.kn WARNKKN, Vicc-Presidcni; JOHN stewart. President; Barbara ross. Secretary-Treasurer. MASQUERS AND THESPIANS During the past year the dramatic societies have done a great deal to indoctrinate the miners in an appreciation of the art of drama. When the wagon groups were organized in the Fall, those interested in presenting plays for their fellow miners competed for the honor of becoming members of the Masquers Club. The Thespian Society, Troupe 41 of the National Thespian Society, consists of the experienced members of the Masquers who have earned ten points by actual participation in any phase of play production. PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB Lurking in all corners of our mining camp, are the members of the Photography Club, ready to snap pictures of us as we participate in the numerous activities offered by the various clubs. It is they who take, develop and enlarge the snapshots of campus life. They find fun in their work, and learn the intricate mechanics of photography under the in-structorship of Mr. Ghede. GLEN COVE HIGH SCHOOL BAND As the 49'crs wind their way across the burning sands of education, they are spurred on by the stirring musif of the High School Band which is composed of those prospectors, who are interested in music, under the leadership of Mr. George Scott. The sixty-piece band made its debut when it played at the football games. Thereafter it presented several much appreciated concerts for Assemblies and finished off the season by marching with the 49'crs in the Memorial Day Parade. 65 Director—GEORGE SCOTT GLEN COVE HIGH Always present with its golden melodies is the Glee Club. Ready, at all times, to spur us on to greater goals of success in education, it heralds the coming of each season and holiday with song. Many long evenings are brightened by the choristers in gay gowns singing all types of music under the capable direction of Mrs. Gilmore. The Glee Club offers to its members an excellent opportunity to direct their musical aptitude into the right paths. SCHOOL GLEE CLUB % OFFICERS Seated, left to right: n. Bern, Mrs. marion cii.morf., m. pfr ROTTa. Standing: s. koloc.kovsky, m. wesley. The trek westward is not a continual grind of breaking camp, traveling, and then making camp again. During the summer the '49ers swam at any nearby water hole. In the fall, other wagon trains were challenged to a rough game of football, with the Red and Green coming out on top. As winter settled down we holed up in a settlement with the two squads of basketball players taking on all comers. Spring, with its warm winds, brought the stopover to an end and also started the baseball season. Besides playing other wagon trains, wagons played each other and sections played among themselves. During short stop-overs the ’49ers went bowling in the nearest towns. In the high Rocky Mountains the gold-seekers played impromptu games of hockey or held skating parties by the light of huge bonfires. As we roll down the westward side of the Rockies we know we have played hard, fought well, won sometimes and lost several times, but we are ready to face any conflict that lies ahead. LETTER- MEN’S CLUB OFFICERS l.rft to right: w. Baxter. Treasurer; mr. eeorce In our mining site, we also have many boys who, recognizing the need for strong bodies along with good minds, serve on our football, basketball, baseball and track teams. For outstanding accomplishments, the boys receive the High School G” which entitles them to become members of the highly honored Lettermen’s Club, under the sponsorship of Mr. George Kuhn. This letter is the highest athletic award given by the school. The boys meet twice monthly, and their objectives are to enjoy sports events and to raise money to buy the Senior members white sweaters on which to place their awarded G”. KAVA stot In 1818 the accidental discovery of gold ushered in the great California Gold Rush. Just 100 years later, a prospector, namely, Coach Ziggy Nedwick, discovered a wealth of football talent which he used to the best ]x ssible advantage during the football season. As that golden year rolled to a close, the football team chalked up seven wins to one loss. The team worked as a unit just as our forefathers did when they built our country. The passing combination of Britt-Kava was successfully used many times during those eight wonderful games and the cooperative spirit of Baxter, Bertone, Spellman, Segc, Larson and Oswald brought about the good sportsmanship that was so prevalent in the games. The fellows, no matter how tired, left no weak spots on either the line or the backfield. They left in their trail a blaze of golden light in which they almost attained the goal of champions. Inside, the atmosphere was jubilant anil tense as the Glen Cove fighting five gave its all in a hard battle on the basketball lloor. Although the 1948-49 basketball team did not win all the games, they achieved something as important— a spirit of unity and teamwork among the members. Rawlings Walton's all-around playing, Joe Rizzo's playmaking, Ted Baade's set shooting, Larry O'Rourke’s good jumping and Vincent Frigeria's speed combined with the skills of Bettis Richardson, Walter Rykowski, Paul Morris, Donald Peck, and Donald Kinncar made for a hard-fighting team. Team members felt that the success of the team was due in a large measure to the efforts of Mr. Bongiorno. Hugh Whitton and Ronald Coleman acted as team managers.
