Alma iHatrr Rahl for Glen Cove High School All hail to thee. Dear Alma Mater, We will loyal be. Ever let thy glory Shine for ages long. Three cheers for Glen Cove High Will be our song----------- Rah! Rah! Rah! GUasfi at liJ4r (lint (Slmt? i tyl} rhmil (£lrn (tar, Nrrn fxirk Slmtr 194 Z 3 JFnrpuinrii The crew members of the Class of '47 present this annual to you with the sincere desire that you become better acquainted with life aboard the Good Ship G. C. H. S. As you climb on deck you may sense the feeling of cooperation between the captain, the officers, and the crew. Listening intently you can catch phrases of a chantey as the crew prepares to cast off, .... Dear Alma Mater, we will loyal be. The words seem to reflect the spirit of the singers. Then as the sails are hoisted and the ship glides out of port, you become aware of the activity around you. Tasks are varied and many, but all are necessary for a safe, profitable and pleasant voyage. But all too soon our journey draws to a close, and rather sadly the crew prepares to disembark. Each sailor will now go his own way, perhaps seeking a position aboard another vessel, but he will never forget his fellow seamen and his happy times at Glen Cove High School. To our Captain, Mr. Eugene J. Gribbin, who has completed thirty years of faithful and friendly service to the schools and community of Glen Cove, we, the Class of 1947, dedicate this Profile . 5 EUGENE J. RICHARDSON Senior Advisor -Sseaer-V CD tr Four Years Before the Mast In the year 1943 we launched our ship on its successful four year voyage. During our first year at sea we gained our sea legs with the aid of the officers and older members of the crew. Our first year went swiftly, and we had time to participate in only a few of the activities aboard ship. We began our second year with a bangl Since new additions to the crew had been made, we had to join in acquainting them with sea life. There were new and better activities aboard ship, and we reached the half way mark before we knew it. During the third year of our voyage we prepared ourselves for our task of aiding in commanding the ship. This was to take place sooner than we realized. Our final year at sea arrived at last. Dances were held in the ballroom, competitive games were played and the ship's log was completed. Our voyage drew to a close with a note of sadness but with many happy memories. : - 10 v JERRY GALLO Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm. —Emerson. As we visit the foreign ports and try our ability at a new tongue, we find much interest has been added to our voyage by the varied activities of our language clubs. Many new sights are quickly captured by the able members of the Photography Club, so that in years to come we may recall our happy trip together. The sailors in this band had many duties with which to keep pace. At football games the band was present with its red and green regalia lending its support to the team. The next occasion for going ashore was on Halloween, when the band provided music for the children's parade. Back on board ship, a much appreciated concert was presented in February. Then in true style the band enjoyed a bus-man's holiday by traveling to Jones Beach. Thus the hearty seamen finished off another successful season! 52 Director. The Girls' Glee Club offers to its members an excellent opportunity to steer their musical ability into the proper channels. A moderate amount of musical ability, a pleasing voice, and a willingness to cooperate are the essential qualifications for membership. Each year try-outs are held to select members who will participate in the Sectional All-State Concert and the All-Nassau Programs. By its many memorable contributions of musical entertainment, the Glee Club has certainly become one of the organizations which add so much to the school year. 53 When the lookout raises the cry of Land Ho! , every member of the crew dusts off his dress blues and prepares himself for a diverting time ashore. On February 11, 1947, China was sighted off the port bow, and all hands made for shore to enjoy the Senior Ball. Decorations consisted of green crepe paper streamers, a Chinese Pagoda and many multicolored lanterns. Music was provided by the Nassau Commanders, an able group of mandolin players. After four months at sea, this affair was thoroughly enjoyed by all; and everyone came away saying but one thing— Open the Door, Chang. 54 THE ALPHA SOCIETY President_______________________________________________JERRY GALLO Vice-President______________________________________OONSUELLA PATTERSON Secretary _______________________________________________JUNE HAGSTROM Treasurer -------------------------------------—JOAN TATE Faculty Advisor____________________MISS LORETTA McNAMARA The Alpha Society requires that its members have an exceptional character, be outstanding scholastically, and be participants in our school's activities. The government of this club is much like that of the ancient Roman Republic. One of the aims of the club is to help the students realize that Latin is not an obsolete language, but one which is of great importance in the modem world. With this understanding as a background the club strives to widen the student's knowledge of Roman life and ways and to show the fact that Latin is the basis for many of our languages of today. The most memorable event of the year is the traditional Roman banquet, with members attending in costumes which represent many of the outstanding Romans of ancient times and many mythological characters. New members are introduced at a tea held in their honor, and at regular meetings movies aTe sometimes held. At otfier times Latin games are plcjyed and Latin songs are sung. Because of this many of those aboard the ship study the French language and belong to an organization known as Le Cercle Francois. Here the sailors practice speaking French, sing songs in that language, and learn much about the country in unmerous ways. When the ship is in port, the members of Le Cercle” attend French plays and operas. This year many members went to see the plays 'Cyrano de Bergerac” and Joan of Lorraine.” The opera they attended was Faust” by Gounod. Through these various activities our seamen are able to acquire a better understanding and appreciation of France. During this past year the crew members of the Biology Club made a noteworthy voyage, one which brought both learning and enjoyment. With Captain Bishop charting the way, the seamen undertook the task of constructing a map of Long Island. Accurate data for the map had been obtained (by the members of the 1945-46 club) directly from the United States Geological Survey. The map was made of balsa wood and was covered with plaster of Paris, its coloring being in accordance with the geological origin of the rock. The crew had a jolly time at the Christmas party, and fun was had by all at the beach party. The club traveled to New York where it visited the Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Science and Industry. A belated trip to see Showboat” was made by the 1945-46 members. There's no doubt about it—the Biology Club has earned a permanent place on our ship. But for their influence, the crew members would be moving in an ever increasing confusion along A and B decks, and congregating like barnacles where they can least afford to gather. Under the supervision of the executive officer, Miss DuBois, these crewmen were taught to undertake the functions of the library. Each seaman had to stand one watch a week during which time he checked in new magazines, read shelves, worked at the desk or shellacked new books. When the members of the crew of our ship have completed their daily tasks, they go out to show their skills in the field of sport with other vessels. Though our crew may not always win over their rival ships, they are always ready to give a good account of themselves as they carry the Red and Green battle-flag through all their encounters. In the fall our able-bodied seamen engage in the popular sports of football and soccer. When winter's icy blasts drive the crew below, they show their proficiency in basketball. In the spring when our ship is nearing port, the crew turns to baseball and track for recreation. When the most experienced crew men have finished their hitch, they look back with pleasure to their exploits in sports as well as in other fields of endeavor. They can well be proud of the standard they have set for our ship. SOCCER TEAM First Row. Myrtle, Shumski. Chebuske. D. McKinney—Captain. Eggers, Stalb, Johnston. During this voyage our ship adopted a new sport. For the first time in many years we turned out a soccer team. Not only did this team give a good account of itself, but it proved to be one of the best, as it tied for second place in the Nassau Soccer League. The team was coached by Mr. Maiden who did a brilliant job of whipping a bunch of inexperienced seamen into a smooth-working team. Elected captain was Dan McKinney who held the goalie post. The fullbacks included John Chebuske and John Putala, two seamen who got off some booming kicks. The halfback line consisted of Jerry Gallo, Cal Titus, and Tom Doran, all boys who showed plenty of hustle. The scoring punch was packed into the forward line which saw A1 Shumski and Ralston Stalb at the wing positions with Jack Hellyer, captain for next year, Steve Hasay, and Fred Eggers in the inside posts. A good deal of credit for the successful season should go to the second string. They were out there each night drilling the first team in scrimmages. They are often the forgotten men of sports. (Tram!” In the fall when the voyage starts, our most able-bodied seamen engage in the ever popular sport of football. Always giving a good account of itself— win, lose, or draw—our team brings continual honor to our ship. Coached very ably by Mr. Nedwick and Mr. Bon-giomo, our team had no lineup, as substitutes were very frequent during the clashes. In the backfield, and doing most of the scoring, was Buddy Spellman, a triple threat back, who for the second straight year was selected for the Nassau County All-Scholastic Team. The ball-handling in the T-formation and a good deal of the running from the single wing was done by Captain Vinnie Magliochetti. Also seeing a lot of action were Whip” McGrady, a fast, shifty back; foe Rant, a very promising player; Jimmy Capozzi, a strong defensive player; Don Johnston, a speedy passer and runner. Showing a great deal of promise were Phil Rocco, Tom Scott, Bryce McNaughton, and Lou Britt, a good passer. Handling the kicking off and placekicking was Ronnie Young, whose field goal against Lawrence beat that worthy rival. In that all-important line we had three veterans from former trips: Rolf Carlsen, a powerful tackle; Charles Dione, a fine center and backer-up; and George Marr, an alert and fast-moving end. Newcomers to the first team include Lennie Adler and Hook Martone, two boys who were in on every play, as well as Charles McKinney, John Martone, and Bill Cullum, more hard-playing linesmen. Seeing action in the forward wall were Pete Kleckowski, Rocco Caggiano, Dan Casey, Carl Karilivacz and John Kormoski. Yes, everybody is important to the team—the coaches, the boys on the first string, the substitutes, and the managers, Eric Goransen, Bones Militano, and Billy Breen. Though our ship couldn't quite match our defeats with triumphs, they showed definite improvement over former seasons. The team was coached very aptly by Mr. Bongiomo and made up for their height disadvantage with sharp passing and teamwork. The scoring was led by forward Joe Rizzo, who in addition to caging over 100 points, excelled in pass-work and defense. Other outstanding players included high scoring center Dick Schneider, playmaker Bob Curiano, sharpshooters Burt Pierce and Jimmy Capozzi and three good all-around players, Charlie Curiano, Vince Magliochetti and Ken Spy. These boys together with Pete Kleckowski, Eddie Myrtle, Sebastian Bove and Frank Christofano, proved to be a combination that was tough for anyone to beat. The Jayvee squad coached by Mr. Lamas showed some very promising future varsity material. Among those most prominent were John Kormoske, Ben Faman, A1 Venturino, Dick Ketcham and Lou Britt. The squad of managers, Oliver Auchenpaugh, Dick Pollen, Hugh Whitten, Timmy Sheehan and Buddy Williams all gave their time and energy for the benefit of the team. 73 BASEBALL When the cold blasts of winter gave way to spring, the crew came up on deck to engage in the national pastime otherwise known as the sport of baseball. Coached by Mr. McGuckin, the Red and Green baseball team was ranked as one of the better squads in the county. The pitching chores were divided between Joe Rizzo and Ken Spy, while Jimmy Capozzi handled most of the catching. The infield consisted of Hook Martone, Tommy Familletti, Lou Britt and Bob Curiano. In the outfield were Whip McGrady, Don Johnston and A1 Biscardi when Rizzo was pitching. This combination packed a strong offensive punch and really hit the ball against some of the Island's top hurling. Good pitching and fielding also helped the team throughout their games which were usually close and thrilling up to the final inning. TRACK 1947 Those of the crew who did not engage in baseball, turned to the sport of track. Year after year this sport is becoming more popular as it attracts more and more fans. This year's track team, again coached by Mr. Nedwick, went through all the meets with a pretty fair record which is doubly outstanding since they lost Joe Stance and Buddy Spellman, North Shore champs in their respective events. With a fair amount of seasoned material to work with along with the flock of new material, Mr. Nedwick had the best results in the 440, half mile and mile where Brice McNcrughton, Harold Myers and Eddie Myrtle led the parade. Doing his best to try to fill Stanco's shoes was Jerry Gallo who handled the 100 yard dash. There is neither room here nor adjectives sufficient to describe these and other trackmen who helped roll up those points for the Red and Green. 74 Ahoy, there I Let's, get out that spy glass and take a look at Glen Cove High's cheerleaders. Margaret Ritacco and Margaret Hildebrandt took the helm for the Junior girls, while the seniors were lead by Co-captains Anna Famulatte and Catherine Spy. To the tune of Anchors Aweigh the teams entered the gym in a wonderful exhibition of precision marching. The cheerleaders for the two classes led their original cheers to urge their favorite crew on to victory. Competition increased as the teams played basketball, volleyball, and relays. Grace and rhythm were exemplified in the dancing.
