Senior accomplishments, and to familiarize you with our theme — “How school courses adapt students for their future careers.” Students do not fully realize the importance of their school courses and activities until they reach their last year when they begin to adjust themselves to thoughts of the future. This feeling of uncertainty has been checked, however, by numerous courses which stress the need of alertness and preparedness in all things pertaining to the task which lies ahead. The build-up to the future is far from being a task since this is a pleasant combination of study and recreation. Let us observe, now, the manner in which our students prepare themselves for the years to come ... RICHARDSON Senior Advisor Given birth in 1942, the class of ’46 has swept through four glorious years of high school to this long awaited day of graduation. Time has flown and now we must take leave of these beloved halls. Still, if we had it to do over, we wouldn't change a thing. This is what we mean: Take for instance, our Freshman year: the thrill of meeting new people and doing new things: the first taste of the glamour of football season, the excitement of basketball games: the Band, Glee Club, Tattler and all the other wonderful activities we were allowed to participate in. These made us feel the delightful sensation of growing up. How quickly we became Sophomores! This was a superb year! Now some of us owned cars and we found ourselves being whizzed from game to game through an unbelievably successful football season when our team was rated the best in New York State. Need we add that we, as Sophs, gave the Freshmen our share of heckling? The next year, we moved out of the low'er halls and proudly inhabited the sunny corridors of Junior Lane. Of course we remember the many impressive happenings of this, our last school year, at war. The huge success of our Junior Prom added much excitement to the last davs of this grand year. Now, our final and most glamorous year: the excitement of our very successful football season; the various sports dances we held; the grand Senior Ball; the wonderful Senior Play; selling theater tickets; the magazine drive; fun we had in working on the Profile. All these delightful experiences made our Senior year one of the most successful in the history of Glen Cove High School. Proud of ourselves as the first peacetime graduating class in four years, we will always remember these joyful days of our youth. Good-bye to dear Alma Mater! Being a very formal occasion, the gentlemen were “spruced up” in their tuxedos and the ladies, in their long flowing gowns and lovely corsages. The couples whirled and danced to the melodious harmony of the Nassau Commanders. The theme chosen for the Ball was “Sweethearts.” The gymnasium was beautifully decorated with red and white streamers ascending from all points of the gymnasium to the top center, from which paper hearts dangled. In the middle of the floor were two huge hearts and on either side stood a couple, one, old fashioned, and one, modern. The Ball, perhaps one of the most colorful events of the year, will long be remembered by all who were present. 46 A COMKl'TICI T VWkl i: Stage and Properties Committee S E IV I O II PLAY On April fourth and fifth, the Senior Class presented a three act comedy, ‘A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court” adapted from the work of Mark Twain. The coaches, LeVan Smith and “Ziggy Nedwick brought the team through a difficult season with a record of five wins, two defeats and one tie. The crowning achievement of the season was the ‘ Red and Greens” triumph over Mineola, the Nassau county champions. Glen Cove was led on the field by Captain Joe Martone. “Bambi” was named “all-scholastic” for his third straight year and also gained the distinction of a first team post on the “All-Metropolitan eleven.” He was changed from guard to fullback towards the end of the season and filled the back field position admirably. Other backs were ince Magliochetti, Joe Stanco, and “Buddy” Spellman. “Vinnie” was outstanding in his ball handling passing and blocking. “Sonnie” Stanco was high scorer for the “Red and Green” and handled the placekicking. “Buddy” Spellman was a fine all-around player. He was named halfback on the “All-Scholastic” team and he really deserved it. At center was Charlie Dione. Charlie filled his job of hacking up and played a great game all season. The guards were Kenny Spy and Walt Cienkowski. Ken played his second year on the team and really played his position. “Puff” was moved into the lineup when Joe Martone, who changed to the backfield, immediately resumed his excellent play which made so many of our games a success. The tackles were Anthony Bruges and Rolf Carlson. Tony successfully played his first year on the team while Rolf, a seasoned veteran, was the main cog of that strong left side of the line. The ends. Bill Donaldson and George Marr, were both in there all the time and played heads-up ball. Of course we mustn’t forget those second stringers. They’re the boys that drill the first team in plays and are always ready to go in as relief. Credit should also go to the managers—Eric Gor-ansen and Heney Colyer—who devoted their time for the benefit of the team. At the annual banquet in the cafeteria, heaping platters of turkey were consumed by all and that tonnage lost during the season was regained. The squad elected “Vinnie” Magliochetti captain for next year and Bill Donaldson was named “Most Valuable Player.” BASKETBALL Standing left to right—Mr. Shoen, Pollen, Pierce, Schneider, Kleckowski, Whitten, Mr. Smith. Though this year’s team has not turned in as impressive a record as some of our previous teams, partly due to its lack of height, they made it up with the determination and grit, giving teams such as Garden City and Sewanhaka some mighty close fights. Coaches Howard Shoen and LeVan Smith can justly be proud of their team which never gave up until the final buzzer. The team that finished the season worked together smoothly and as a unit. They played perhaps their best games of the year against Manhasset and Garden City in which they lost by identical scores of 30-28. At the guard position was Bob Curiano. Flaying a fine defensive game all season, he frequently chipped in with much needed points. Fighting it out for the other guard position all year long were Ken Spy and Vince Magliochetti. “Vinnie” played a steady brand of ball all season and Ken came through in the clutch at Mineola where Glen Cove won its only league game as he tossed in the tying and winning points. Fighting it out for the forward position were Burt Pierce and “Junior” Rizzo. Burt was ready to go in there all season long and Rizz came up from the jayvees in mid-season. Holding down the other forward position was Jimmy Capozzi. Jim racked up point after point on his set shots from the side. Sharing the center position most of the season were Dick Schneider, Pete Kleckowski and Eddie Myrtle. The managers were Oliver Auchenpaugh, Dick Pollen and Hughie W hitten. They were the boys that took care of the equipment and tabulated the scoring. Our jayvee team really had a good season. The junior varsity took 13 triumphs, while losing only 4 times. Many of the players showed promise for future varsity teams as they completely outclassed some of their opponents. Among those most prominent were John Kormoski, Charley Curiano, Sebastian Bove, A1 Venturino, Eddie Myrtle and Louie Britt. T II A f K Across the way from the baseball field were a group of hard working hoys practicing at the broad jump pits, sprinting across the field or doing distance running. Yes, this was our track team getting ready for a very promising season. Coach “Ziggy” Nedwick’s charges rated high among the counties leading track teams this season. Many hoys returned from last year's team which was one of the best ever. Heading the list was “Sonny” Stanco, Long Island Sectional Champion in the 100 yard dash. “Buddy” Spellman, Gene Stroppel, Jerry Gallo, and Stanco made up our senior relay team in addition to competing in the 220. Bill Donaldson and Tony Torra handled the distance running. We had a fine junior team which was built around Jimmy Williamson, Johnny Donovan and Red Paul. As winter s cold weather gave way to the warm spring sunshine, you could hear the sharp crack of a solidly hit hall coming from the direction of the baseball field. It was our baseball team fighting for those first string positions under the watchful eye of Coach Charles McGuckin. Among those wiio showed most promise were Walt Rudzinsky and Ken Spy, a pair of pitchers with plenty on the ball; Don Johnston and “Whip” McGrady, heavy hitters; Tommy F ammiletti and Lou Britt, a smooth working infield combination with a lot of zip; and Rocky Caggiano, a center fielder who could really get under that ball. Besides these fellows, the other positions were being hotly contested between a host of hustling hall players, eager to make the grade. The team had an 18 game schedule including 10 games for the North Shore Championship; 2 each with Mineola, Man basset. Garden City, Great Neck, and Port Washington. HOIS S 1 O It T NIGIIT On May 7th in our spacious gymnasium the boys staged a sport night for the benefit of the parents and the alumni. A precision calisthenics drill was given by the boys under the direction of physical instructor George Kuhn. The boys went through this exhibition almost flawlessly and showed fine timing. In addition to the calisthenics and precision drill, the boys demonstrated apparatus work— both stationary and with the springboard. After this they participated in basketball relays in which they showed their skills in shooting baskets. A dodge ball game followed which showed a lot of action and thrills as well as quite a few spills. All in all, the program was enjoyed by everybody; both the participants and spectators. The program showed fine organization as well as cooperation by all the boys. 59 c ii i: i: it l i: a n i: it s Front Row: Connie Patterson, Mary Ann Mercadante, Anita Hamada, Myrna Cengerally, Nancy Neilson, Rose Rirhardi, Angie Capobianeo, Flo Jugt, Eleanor Zieldzny. On May 14th, we held our first Sport Night since the beginning of the war. The spectators were breathtaken by the precision and form in the entrance of the marching teams. Original songs and cheers composed by the members of each team inspired the contestants to go forth to victory. Competition was displayed in the form of basketball, volley ball, and relays. Grace and rhythm were exemplified by the dancers in the rhumba, tango, samba, waltz, and Lindy. At the close of the performance the skillful contestants were presented with awards by our principal, Mr. Walter Smith. It was difficult for one to distinguish between winners and losers, as the girls left the floor laughing and smiling after the evening’s battle. 61 PHILS’ V All S I T Y BASKETKALL Glen Cove 23 6 Glen Cove 29 26 Glen Cove 14 10 Glen Cove 12 7 Glen Cove 6 6 Manager—Eleanor Gregory Assistant—Ann Grennan Good sportsmanship, ability, and co-operation have added up to make our successful girls basketball team. Composed of 70 musically inclined students, this organization not only performs for the student body, but is often called upon to entertain at community affairs. In the fall, color and spirit are added to the football games when the band marches on the field in full military tempo. Their snappy marching and stirring music create spirit and enthusiasm in both the player and the spectator. During the winter and the early spring months, the band does not go into seclusion, but it presents varied musical concerts, one of which was put forth on the stage of our local theater. The big event of the spring season is the Memorial Day parade. The band again marches with its colors flying and the seniors parade with them. We must not forget the performance of the Drum Majorette, Evelyn Larsen, and her twirlers headed by Gloria Duffy. They are perfect examples of coordination in their twirling routines. Within the band there are several outstanding students who have exceptional musical ability: John Heggie who does solo work on the saxophone, John Samoske, on the accordion, and Vincent Magliochetti, Phil Rocco and Oliver Auchenpaugh, on the trumpet. The Orchestra is a branch of the band which is comprised of selected members. This group plays at assemblies, the Senior Play and Commencement Exercises. Each member gives up a considerable amount of his time to make the presentations of the group possible. Truly the band and the orchestra have reaped honor and glory upon both themselves and the school at every occasion. The modern American youth is a lover of music, and the Glee Cluh is an outlet for his musical ambition. The Glee Cluh, which is comprised of sixty talented girls, each possessing definite vocal ability, can always be called upon to blend their voices in melodious harmony. Diligent effort and hard work is put forth by all to attain excellent quality in the varied performances presented during the year. Every festive occasion is accompanied by the Glee Club, some of these being the solemn Christmas pageant, the joyous Easter program, the spring concert, and the memorable Commencement Exercise. With the ending of the war, it is now possible for club members to correspond directly with the French people. As a further gesture of-friendship, members of “Le Cercle Francais” send bundles of needed clothing to France. The Club’s activities are not confined to the classroom alone. The government of the club is copied after that of the Roman republic. New members are individually introdi ced and dubbed Roman citizens by one of the consuls at a tea held in their honor. At meetings, Roman games are played, and sometimes a film concerning Latin is presented. To correspond with the Christmas parties of the other clubs, the Latin students celebrate the old Roman holiday of Saturnalia. The outstanding event of the year is the traditional Roman banquet at which time all members attend dressed in Roman costumes. Also, during the year, trips are made to museums and other places of interest where students may become better acquainted with many of the things that they study. BIOLOUY CLUB A new addition to our ranks, the Biology Club, has started off very successfully. Under the able guidance of Miss Bishop, meetings are held at regular intervals to discuss club business and to plan new projects for its members. During the first semester, the Biology Club gave an extremely enjoyable party for its members and their friends. SAFETY COINCIL Under its temporary commissioner, David S. Rejuvenated by the enrolling of new staff members and the enforcing of both new and old rulings, the Safety Council has been almost able to realize its goal of a neater and quieter school. The staff itself consists of some thirty-five students, most of whom are upper class-men. The reason for the existence of the Safety Council is not actually to police the entire student body, but to see that no unnecessary and dangerous confusion is caused. Council members are on duty at all strategic positions to guide hall traffic along smoothly. Their very presence deters most contemplated noise-making or rule-breaking, and the school is the better for its existence. 75 LI II It All V M i lt The Library (Huh is composed of thirty-five members who are interested in hooks and in taking care of our school library. I nder the capable guidance of Mr. Adolph Gehde, more and more “Shutterbugs” have learned to develop and print their own films. I hey have been taught the fundamentals of snapping pictures, and they enjoy this work immensely. Meetings are held once every two weeks, on Monday afternoon, to discuss progress made and any problems which may have arisen. Many of the photos in this Profile were taken by Mr. Gehde, with the willing assistance of Irving W ait. Some of the casual shots were contributions of other members of the club. To he chosen a member of Alpha, a student must have an outstanding character, and must attain high marks, as well as take active participation in school activities. When a student is admitted, he is expected to carry on the traditions of this society to the best of his ability. The present Seniors in the Alpha will in future years look hack and remember with pride and gratitude how well Mr. LeVan Smith sponsored this society during their first three years. Their last year was under the guidance of Miss McNamara, who worked very hard with the students to keep up the high standards of the Society. She deserves our sincere thanks. This publication is under the supervision of Miss Hogg and is composed of various columns of interest: “The Roving Reporter,” which is a sort of Vox Pop, “Tattle Tales,” which provides the school’s gossip, “Every Little Thing,” which is a conglomeration of both wit and intellect, and “Sporting Shots.” The main events of the month are revealed on the front page. Members of the Tattler Staff gain much valuable knowledge and experience both in the fields of journalism and advertising. This experience lays a foundation for students desiring entrance in the field of journalism. 78 REPORTERS Gilda Bloom Ileana Patterson Patricia McMahon Harriet Greenberg Jane Brigati June Hagstrom Bernard Glickman Gloria Gherubini Joan Gampbell Yvonne Innes Ruth Donaldson Anita Haniada Frotnaine Jacobs Jerry Gallo Irene Doran Andrew Martone Marie Bojenski Louis Klenkle Irene Sadowski Peggy McNally Douglas Baldwin Gharles Dailey Frank Epervary Richard Gerle David Lees TRANSCRIPTION Ilia Adams Dorothy Cook Elizabeth Duncan Evelyn Beresniewicz Cecilia Leslie Virginia Grella Florence Cotroneo June Coyle Rose Di Rienzo Anne Hart Marilyn Feinberg Evelyn Larsen Rosemary Graziosc Mary Bruno Frances Zakoske Victoria Zylnievicz ADVERTISING June Robertson Surita Greenberg Frank Salentino Elizabeth Dilg Calvin Titus John McClure James Goslyn Joan Ackerman Elizabeth Peck CIRCULATION Peggy Gribbin Barbara Shane Ruth Gloss Rolf Carlson Lucy Cappiello Dick Ketcham Jean Tamlvn 79 CITY OFFICIALS City of Glen Cove, New York ARTHUR AITKENHEAD .
