Over the years Miss Chapman's hearty personality has warmed and delighted the hearts of students. Furthermore, her enthusiastic qualities have been enioyed and appreciated by the faculty for many years. Miss Chapman began teaching at Glacier when it opened 12 years ago. She has taught Health Education, Survival courses, and has promoted the teaching of First Aid. Also, she has devoted her time in teaching Sex Education. She was one of the first advisors at Camp Waskowitz and shows the importance of the outdoor world by fishing, camping and hiking. With sincere gratitude and pleasure, we dedicate this years annual to a wonderful person who is retiring this year. Most of these activities at Glacier are centered around the weekly football game. This years team, the greatest in GIacier's football history, made it a thrilling and memorable fall for all of us. In the bears first league game of the season, they ripped to a 14-12 victory over Kent Meridian, a team we had never defeated. With the momentum started, the grizzlies then rolled on to win 4 more straight games. A close 1 point victory over Highline was the start of one of the highlights of the year, Homecoming. A dance, the night after the game, capped off a truly special weekend. Then the bears, ranked 2nd in state, slipped, and 3 games were lost. But under Coach Steve Doutrich the grizzlies bounced backand trounced Tyee for the final game of the season. This years team, setting a 7-3 record for the season. finished close in the standings behind Kent Meridian, Kentridge, and lVlt. Rainier. GAA is an exciting, fun-filling club where any girl can participate in many sports throughout the year. The girls met twice a week before school. Besides playing volleyball, basketball, badmitten and other sports, they sold snowcones at the home basketball games. This years GIRLS' CLUB was busy with their annual events and projects as well as some new ideas. The girls involved were pleased in the success of their activities. ACTHON AND ACTWHTHES If you've wondered how the school gets decorated with well made signs, or why the teams don't get hungry after their games. just ask the girls in PEP CLUB. They'll tell you they painted the signs and fed the boys with cookies and pop after the games. They do many other things to add spirit to our student body. The SQUARE DANCE CLUB was a success in its first year at Glacier. They danced to familiar songs such as the Virginia Reel, Oh Johnny Oh. and many others. They hope that next year they can expand and have larger dances. N 2-'50 tem' at t. R FAQ Q-03' NOW HS THE THNJIJE. FOR INVOLVEMENT Several girls served as CLINIC AIDS this year. Throughout the day as people came into the clinic these girls worked diligently. Their jobs consisted of checking people in and out of the clinic. taking temperatures, keeping the beds neat and helping in emergencies. This year, Mr. Chester's PHYSICS CLUB met after school to probe into the mysteries of physics. Through various movies, activities, and experiments, the club came to a better understanding of their interests. CHESS is a game requiring ample amounts of patience, concentration, and skill. This years team had 7 matches during the season. Our chessmates managed only 2 wins and 1 draw, but still had a rewarding season. INTRAIVIURALS at Glacier are a very important part of school life. lt gives students who are sports minded and who enjoy a challenge a chance to take part in athletic activities under relaxed surroundings. The P.E. department depends a great deal on a very special group' of students. These students are the P.E. ASSISTANTS who do everything from leading exercises to correcting tests as well as guiding the sophomores through a very delicate stage of their development. 41 KNOWLEDGE PRGGRESSES TORCH AND HONOR SOCIETY have now combined their efforts together to make a bigger and better club. To qualify for Torch you need a 3.0 grade average, and for Honor Society, a 3.5. Activities of these clubs include selling Christmas stockings at the Christmas Bazaar, a field trip to the U.W. in the spring and their annual banquet which honors this year's graduates and installs next years officers. KEY CLUB, which is sponsored by the Kiwanis' Club, plays an important role at Glacier. Raising the flag each day. roping off the gym at games, and electing Boy of the Month are some of their duties. They held their annual pancake breakfast this spring, and had a banquet at the end of the year to honor its fine members. WOW! lT'S A .... gutter-ball. JLCDQKHNG AHEAD Every morning some determined students boarded a bus and went to the OCCUPATIONAL SKILLS CENTER. Here these students along with students from other schools in the district, practiced in fields to educate them for future employment. DEBATE class boomed through the season with many tournaments coached by Mr. Lien. Team members faced four major events this year. One was an overnight excursion to W.W.S.U. and many other exciting battles took place at Seattle Pacific, U.P.S. and P.L.U. Both Varsity and Junior Varsity teams achieved a fairly successful season. DEBATE members jostled through the year chalking up several win records. WHERE ARE WE GOHNG? Bright and early each Sunday morning for eight weeks the members of Ski School jump on the bus and head for the slopes. While at Ski Acres they are given a lesson for about an hour and a half, and then spend the rest of the day gliding down the slopes practicing what they have learned. Under the supervision of Mrs. Anderson, the 40 members of F.T.A. traveled everyday to help out at the six different elementary schools in the Glacier Area. Since the district won't supply transportation the Future Teachers must walk, run, ride bikes. or drive to the elementary school where they help the teachers, and become friends with the kids. It gives the members a chance to find out a little about the teaching field and whether or not they would like to become teachers. The teachers are very pleased with their help, and feel that the elementary school children benefit greatly by having them. The 72-73 AVALANCHE staff produced some excellent school newspapers this year. Contributing to that is the fact that this years staff is the largest they have ever had. The AVALANCHE is sup- ervised by Mrs. Lemmel. In order to meet their bi-monthly deadlines the staff often spends many hours after school working to meet the deadline. The class is designed to develope skills in the newspaper and advertising fields. LIBRARY ASSISTANTS The LIBRARY ASSISTANTS take care of running the library with the help of Mrs. Crounse. The duties of the Aide's are to keep the library in running order and help their fellow classmates find the material they need for reports and assignments. l 113 4 Helping those who are less fortunate is , the purpose of SPADES Club. The unselfish members of this club visited Grandview school for the handicapped and helped the students. they also visited the Riverton Heights Con- valescent Home. Each day the members of AUDIO VISUAL Club race through the school halls pushing film projectors and various other equipment. Throughout each period of the day you will find three or more hard working girls keeping the students records in perfect order. These girls are a great asset to the organization of Glaciers' office. Learning is only part of the curriculum at Glacier, helping is the other: The students involved in being TEACHERS AIDS assist many of Glaciers teachers in worthwhile projects. Typing, correcting papers, running errands and even counseling with the teachers are to name only a few. Our administration and faculty would like to thank all of the students involved in being Teachers Aids for their help and cooperation. The play was an entertaining delight to many Glacier students as well as many of the local elementary schools. As the year progressed so did the actors and their plays. New and exciting challenges were met by the crew only to enrich their development. Other plays preformed by Drama were "Our Town", "The Devil and Daniel Webster" and "Mr. Roberts." They were also involved in a contest performance titles "Last of My Solid Gold Watches". A childrens Christmas Festival was also put on by Drama with Highline, Tyee and Mt. Rainier. A start of a new fullfilling career has been started for many of Glaciers' finer students under the leadership of Mrs. Bea Pearce and the organization of Drama Club. AND THERE WAS JMIUSHC The Glacier vocal music program consists of five groups: Concert Choir, Troubadours, Rookie Choir, Sophomore Choir and Men's Choir. Concert Choir is the elite large group, and represents Glacier in all district functions, and goes on tour when possible. Troubadours is the elite. small group who represent Glacier throughout the state. In the fall they sing with the large choir. and carol all through western Washington at Christmas. In the spring they sing popular and rock music as they travel around the Puget -Sound -area. Rookie Choir is made up of upper- classmen new to music, and some experienced upper- classmen. This group combines with Concert Choir all during the year. Sophomore Choir is composed of strictly sophomores, who performed with the combined choir this 'fall and Christmas, and by themselves this spring while traveling through the district. Men's Chorus meets before school, and is a group of men at Glacier who wish to sing and have fun, too. Camp Waskowitz was one of the high points of the year, with Dr. Rodney Eichenberger as guest conductor. The choir made a record of their Christmas performance at which they sang Magnificat by Bach. During the springthey sang at several different schools in the Highline District. 4 ' 119 SQUND' OF GLACIER '3 an mg 'Ms Concert Band has played through another fantastic year. They had both a fall and spring concert, and were superb. They have also performed for other schools. Members of Concert Band devoted many extra hours, coming before school and staying after school for section rehearsals. The Glacier Stage Band played at many of our games and Pep Assemblies. There wouldn't have been nearly as much spirit without them. They did a great job at Glacier as well as traveling to other schools for performances. All the members of Stage Band put in a lot' of extra time throughout the year. Pep Band, composed of members of the Concert Band, played for Pep Assemblies and some of the games and contributed to school spirit. FEAST lFood Education And Service Trainingl is a new program this year in the Highline District. Glacier is the only school which has this program. FEAST is a four period block which includes one hour Publicity and Public Relations, one hour Business Math, two hours Food Lab, and work experiences on the side. The head advisor of FEAST is Mrs. Call. along with teachers Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Moore icookl, Mr. Phillips, and Mr. Maloney. The eighteen students involved are juniors and seniors. They get working experiences from serving at banquets, having carwashes. and many students have jobs working in restaurants. FEAST has been a very successful program at Glacier. 5 x as- ' v- ,,,, , - 'S X . W...,..,,..t- K., Qi., X-xS,i.xss 5 t i , 1 . i P s '- ' si YW if?"-1 'K N r W K ,.
