TRADE TACKLER STAFF The Trade Tackler, the school newspaper, is published each month by the students, and is printed by the boys at The Ottmar Mergenthaler School of Printing. The paper does much in creating a friendly spirit among the girls of the different trades, and keeps them informed of the activities of the school. The paper has won membership in both the Quill and Scroll Society and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. ReginaGriihth . X ' THE SUN-DIAL SPORTS AND VOLLEY BALL: Volley ball practice was aided by the great number who tried out for the team. Intramural games such as the one pictured between BS2 and PS2 were held on the school held during lunch hour. Scores of rooters watched these games, shrilling themselves hoarse as they urged their classmates on to victory. The following girls are on the Varsity Volley Ball Squad: On the first row are Marion Hla- dik, Natalie Fornaro, Helen Grim, Ruth Tarlton, Dorothy Hopp, Alice Dumphy, Sophie Green, with Ruth Goldstein, 'Lorraine Rowan, Eleanor Landon, Elsie Perry, Isahelle Rost, Elizabeth McCubbin, and Helen Walker on the second row. BOWLING: Dorothy Kowalski was the sch00l's outstanding bowler when she tied the the school record for lil-score for one game this season. Lavinia Schaefer won second place in the city-wide tournament in which girls from all high schools competed. The Varsity Bowling Team rolled against the other High School Varsity Teams. Our team consisted of Lavinia Schaefer, Dorothy Hopp, Catherine Coffin, Geraldine Vlach, Fvelyn Bris- tow, and Mary Scott. The Varsity team was victorious over the faculty in the annual contest. This year for the first time we entered both a Varsity and a Junior Varsity Team. Lavinia Schaefer held high score in the Varsity vs. Faculty game. TABLE TENNIS: The Table Tennis Team practiced in the gym in the morning before school. They tied for hfth place in the lnter-scholastic Tournament. On this team we have Dorothy Needle, La- vinia Schaefer, Rhea Ohle, and Vir- ginia Bruce. The girls of G. V. S. express their sincere thanks to their coaches, Miss Grace Willett and Miss Naomi Lantz, for their cooperation and help. THE SUN-DIAL ACTIVITIES BASKETBALL: Opposite you have a fine picture of the Basketball Squad of 1940. These girls entered the Junior Varsity Tour- nament against other high schools in the city such as Eastern, Western, Southern, Forest Park, and Patterson Park. ln the picture they are in the fol- lowing order: Alice Dumphy, Caro- lyn Radecke, Dorothy Drury, Eloise Sell, Frances Orzewicz, Mary Reinhart, Edith Bowen, Elizabeth McCubbin, Elaine Rowan, and Isabelle Rost. At practice we had fine, large groups of girls eager to make the junior Varsity Team this year. Here you find Isabelle Rost practicing shooting baskets in the gymnasium. ARCHERY: To the girls of G. V. S., Archery is known as The Sport of Kings, and The King of Sports. G. V. S. proved her ability in this great sport when she competed in the city-wide tourna- ment which was played againsr other high schools. The Archers practiced every Tuesday and Wednesday after- noon when the weather permitted and also on Saturday mornings, when Shooting Picnics were held at Clifton Park. On this page you will find some very nice shots of our star Archers in action at Clifton Park. SOFTBALL To all at G. V. S. Softball usually holds the limelight. Every lunchtime on our playground you will see many girls diligently playing ball, most of them with the hope of making the Varsity Team. We had a fme group for Varsity Squad and their captain was Evelyn Bristow. On this page is the group picture of the Varsity Softball Squad and here are their names. First row: Dorothy Koster, Lavinia Schaefer, Charlotte Hood, Carolyn Radecke, and Alva jehnert. Back row: Mary Reinhart, Evelyn Bristow, Mary Rainer, Mary Scott, Genevieve Murray, and Jean Robier.
