X X' A' ' 0 o'lllg on 0000 0 Us classmate mspects tl glrl s flrst cotton dress 'Y TRADE SEWING Trades Sewmg 1S the mayor part of one of the four year courses offered at Grrls Trades and Technrcal I-hgh School When the school was f1rst organlzed ITS Ob1GCl1VS was to teach trades to grrls who had left the regular academrc schools to go to Work These glrl were poorly prepared to do efflcrent Work and could earn only the mlnrmum wages pard at that trme Therr struggle aga1nst these Clrcumstances aroused the sympathy of Mrs Slmon Kander Mrs Vrctor Berger and other Women who were mterested 1n the socral l1fe of young g1rls who had to help wlth the support of therr fam1l1es These publlc sprrlted women made plans to lmprove condltlons ln Mllwaukee and took those plans to the school board and then to the State Leg1slature The results of these efforts was the M11 Waukee School of Trades for Glrls The orrgmal two year course has been changed to meet educahonal demands for a four year course lt has been enrlched by the add1t1on of many subte ts The course now meets the requrrements of all courses for the four year h1gh school drploma The Trades Sewmg Course as one of trades courses has seven semesters of sewlng Thrs lncludes elementary problems chlldrens dresses cotton dresses afternoon dresses ta1lor1ng formal dresses and power machlne tralmng One year of foods and home nurs mg courses rn textlles famrly relatlons and chrld care home management hrstory of cos tume Wrth Englrsh c1v1cs hrstory arrthmetlc art muslc and physrcal tratnmg complete the thrrty two credlts requ1red for graduatlon The opportumty for addrtlonal electrves IS llmlled but among the popular ones are retallmg salesmanshrp typ1ng soc1ology and economrcs Q I X xl v 'Q . AL hal -0 of fb Page 20 X X her formal CLCDTHING A course m clothmg IS a part of all courses 1n the school Every g1rl who graduates IS requrred to complete a number of sewmg problems The course beglns w1th elementary problems and mcludes the use of patterns and the sewmg machlne The average g1rl completes the course m two semesters and earns two credlts toward graduat1on After the student has made the ttrst problems a co okmg apron and pa1amas she 1S then ready for chlldrens dresses followed by cotton dresses and afternoon dresses In th1s course the student a gu1res enough sklll 1n dressrnakmg to make her own graduatlon dress All graduatron dresses are formal and every graduate makes her own The selectron of the matenal and the patterns must have the approval of the v1ce prmcrpal who supervrses th1s speclal problem The g1rls set the maxlmum amount that may be spent for the mater1als at a senror class meetlng The dresses are made under the dlrect superv1s1on of one ol the clothlng teachers and must meet the requlrements of an examlnatlon ln Clothlng lt lS a dehnlte ach1evement and the graduates are proud of thexr work The necesslty for followmg mstructlons carefully for taklng exact measurements and for usmg good Judgment helps to develop the personallty of the student The g1rls learn to take lnstructlons and follow them to work wlth other people to take cr1t1c1sm gracrously and to lll'11Sl'l the problem rl X19 ' A rg i '55 ' a .l if 'A ,NN 1. . , . , . , .
