The pep rallies, chapel programs, classes, new friends, An Army of Buckeyes , Sadie Hawkins Day, Junior-Senior Banquet, Graduation .... these were all part of it. We didn't know it at the time, but we were living the four best years of our lives. They were short and they were full and they were different from all the rest. It took all four years to start us on the way to our highest realizations .... and when we were finally seniors and had iust the final step to go, we knew that we had iust begun. It had been a long iourney together. We had found that it takes more than one person to make up one complete life. The names and people we knew during those four years are as numerous as the stars in the sky. Many we will never see again, but the memory is there forever. There will be many after us, but these years are ours to remember forever. lt was an only once in a life-time and it belongs to us. We can't do it over, it would never be the same, and we must go, leaving the dreams and visions we had for GHS to others who will walk the same walks, use the same class rooms, and gaze upon the same campus year after year. We will come back someday and the same campus will be here. We will be strange to the new ones, but will not bestrange to the walks or the class rooms, for we had four years of Old Gilmer High as no one else will ever have them. They were ours and no one can take them away. lt was only four years ago and we didn't think too much about it at first. But it grew as a part of us. Remember our famous slogan: Chew N-N's. N-N means no noise, no nauseating odor. You do not have to be a has been any more. The teacher never catches you chewing N-N's. But more about that later. Now on with our tale of intrigue and---and---well, intrigue. Our last episode was concerned with thrilling experiences at Indian Rock Junior High, with the dissention of our Army of Buckeyes to be in GHS, an event equally as memorable as the Fall of the Bastille or the Normandy Invasion. If you remember, we were now a part of high school and members of our class were participating in school activities. And now, after being pushed around at Junior-Senior Banquets, pushing to top honors in interscholastic League literary and sports events, we arrive at today's epic, two Sadie Hawkin's Days olderf But first a word from our sponsors. This is station GHS, coming your way from inside the walls of Buckeye Institute of ---- knowledge? And sponsored by N-N chewing gum. Remember! If your chew's too loud, it's wrong, get N-N's. N-N's always do iust what you want them to do! And now, suddenly, our JUNIOR year has rolled around! With a crop of newly elected officers, we have proceeded to take the school by storm-- lat least all the money we can rake inl. First came ribbon sales . . . then the bottle breaking--Oh! I mean the drink selling. Every Saturday morning, a huge group fabout three! of the deiectecl and tired-looking JUNIORS met to pick up what was left of the cold drink bottles and deposit the money. Strangely enough, some of this money actually got to the bank! But what will these strange creatures do with all the gold and silver now in their possession? Where is the beautiful arena and coliseum where the JUNIOR-SENIOR BANQUET will be held? Who is to be that illustrious, secret guest speaker? What will the outcome be? For the answers to these questions, tune in next year and get the rest of the story of----Backstage Life by JUNIOR Class for should we say Senior Class?J Until then---don't forget to chew N-N's, constructed for no noise, no nauseating odor. Don't be half safe, get N-N's and be sure! P. S. The beauty of this composition is the simplicity of form and the total ommission of names, this, so as not to hurt anyone's feelings! At the beginning there was very little of us. But we used our combined strength against the elements lteachersl until now it is an impossibility to stop us before we fulfill our final aim. We were a little timid at first. During a storm one of our second grade droplets cried, My mamma always told me to come home when it got dark! By the fourth grade a droplet named Bonnie Means found that there are some things we can't go over, we found to go around them. ln this particular instance Bonnie received her first B in deportment for walking on some desks. We lost a blonde droplet that year in the form of Sonny Dunnagan. This was indeed a severe loss to our little brook. Small individual streams flowed in and out of us all the time, and one of our fifth grade accomplish- ments was our persuasion of a black-haired droplet, Patsy Fowler, to stick with us like bubble-gum to your shoe sole. In the sixth grade we had our first departmental work and thus became drops, not droplets. The classes were divided so that most of the boys were in one room while most of the girls were in the other. A drip lpardonl drop, Thomas Marshall, from the boys' room said to a drop, Jimmie Stephens, from the, almost all, girls' room, Ha! Ha! We have all the football players in here. Jimmie, the faithful drip fl'm sorryl drop that he is, retorted, But we have all the pretty girls in our room! By this time we had become a nice, rolling stream. While the boys streng- thened their muscles in playing sports, the girls strengthened their voices in arguments on the softball field! By the time our Indian Rock days rolled around, we were a rivulet, with each person as big a splash as the next. With so much open space we flowed a little too freely at times, so we were given a busting by our overseer. Along with track and field, football and basketball, softball was the favorite of the year. There was a slight misunderstanding between the faculty and the young ladies about the latters' participation in the various sports. However, that was worked out after a few minor revolts. Two tributaries that flowed into us that year were Perriio Gravly and Eddie Morris who arrived in time to join us on a picnic at the Indian Rock. We had been so good lor so bad, I won't say which! that our teachers took the day off and we all enioyed a nice scamper through the grass and woods. There was a tall, black-haired, usually red-faced giant who ruled with an iron hand land a wooden paddle! during spelling class. One day some splashes got behind the blackboard, and for some, still unexplained, reason the thing stuck with the poor little splashes wedged in. Soon, however, some stern words opened the blackboard and everyone was good all the rest of the day. ln the eighth grade we were moving along at a pretty fast clip, gaining speed and strength as we went along. There was a volleyball team that did well for itself wherever it went. The team made us all want to play! We developed our instincts for art by making posters, painting glasses, and fashioning obiects out of wood. Walter La Rue made a splatter out of himself by painting the faces of our much loved teachers on vases! We were taught how to keep time to music and sing with a smile on our faces by our patient music teacher. We did have a very nice graduation and were all iust a little bit sad at leaving behind such a nice school life that we had so enjoyed up to this point. As we entered into our high school days, we had become a small but steadily moving river. Of course, we tried to be iust as sophisticated as the oldest group in the school, but I don't think we quite succeeded! We had happy times at various parties and also enioyed seeing some of our own number play on the Junior Buckeye teams. An epidemic spread throughout the school, but, on the whole, our cold waves came through it pretty well. There were only a few who didn't change the color of their hair or cut it to the roots. , We're a fast moving river, now, with more and more tributaries, like Walter Adams, Jan Hachler, and Carolyn ioining us every day. We think of ourselves as a pretty big wave. Soon we hope to be in the white caps land gowns, too, maybe?J. x ' v xx. fn uqkw' x ' n in 'w Q., ,- ,Q xx :N 1: HC! 4 :, ...J 'n o ,aw .',4 .8 U. As we climbed the first six rungs, our class grew larger and louder. ln the third grade a certain few always developed a sudden fever and retired to the clinic ---- at least until Spanish class was over. ln the sixth grade Sue Stephens and Wayne Gravley and our newest and only Scottish member, Peter Lyall, joined us. On the seventh rung we were sent to the Old High School. In spite of falling plaster and leaky ceil- ings, we had loads of fun. Remember the Truth or Consequences Show , going to Little Band, and getting on the probation list? Here we met Miss Lucylle with a poppy in her hair and a whistle in her mouth. This was the year that Tommy Davidson came roaring in on his shiny red motorcycle. The eighth rung was nearly broken by the thundering herd as we iourneyed out to Indian Rock, Hey, Kids! Do you remember our eighth grade parties, trips to the office, and climbing on top of the building? Do you remember when Indian Rock and Union Ridge consolidated with Gilmer and broughtus a swell bunch of kids? Do you remember the picnics at the end of school? We did everything from swinging on a grape- vine to killing snakes. All of us fell in a creek and got soaked to the skin. Then came graduation and the dance afterwards which made us officially Fish Now that we have just begun our ninth rung, we realize that we left the ladder weak and broken in many places. We have three rungs to go and hope to make these even happier and more successful . nFishu 'EKEAKIXXK f-X,,'N-43111K 'dw XJ l K -X fx -i 1 1 Most Beautiful Girl MARY ELLEN CONNALLY Most Handsome Boy JAN HACKLER . lk. Making it up, however, has taken the cooperation of every one, for without every individual there would be no memories, no book! lt has been hard work, but it has been fun. It has, also, taken time and has sometimes been a worry. However, we have worked on the assumption that all worthwhile things require a reasonable sum of the three: Work, Time, Worry! This annual belongs to everyone of you, the students. You have given us the ideas, the pictures, the memories that go to make it up. In return, we hope we have given you something worthy of your cooperation and support, with the hope that many years later it will serve as a pleasant reminder of your high school days. Many things go to make up a full and happy high school career, with many people contributing. This is our contribution to you, personally. We hope you enioy it! To the staff: You have been as loyal as any editor could wish for. You have all done a splendid job, and I thank you from the depth of my heart To future editors I extend my sympathy and advice: Some students manage to have fun in high school and make the honor roll too, others edit a yearbook! You have molded the foundation for a good and useful citizen. Your future accomplishments will depend upon your attitude toward your fellowman, your willingness to work, your ambition, and your self-confidence. In the future you will need a goal to attain and a passionate attachment for your labors. Men and women have fol- lowed many guiding lights. They have been inspired by love and fame. They have pursued power, wealth, fame, and holiness. Something must beckon you, or nothing will be done. Life is a great game. You must play it diligently. There are lessons in defeat as well as in success. Make your own decisions. Blame your- self for your errors, adversities, and defeats. Take credit for your success. BE WISE AND DARING! The deepest regret of people is for those times when they played safe, remembering that old adage about it being better to be safe than sorry, and did not do what they knew in their hearts and minds they should have done. Too often they played safe only to re- gret this caution. Always, they have suffered more from the challenges ignored than the dares accepted. They have been enriched by risking peace and comfort, and impoverished by every decision to let well enough alone, stay in their place and let the storm blow over. When they have been bored, it has always been a punishment for their indifference to life. That boredom has come from within, and not imposed upon them by others. When they have been grieved most sorely, they should have known that at the seat of their sorrow was regret for acts they had not done, for words not spoken, or gestures restrained. Therefore, there can be no meaning in that old adage better be safe than sorry. Too often, safety itself is the seat of sorrow. Boys and girls should not run wild, heedlessly and recklessly risking their life and character at the price of the happiness of those who love them, because the only source for Peace of Mind is from a God govemed conscience. But, wise daring is the source of lasting happiness, and no person whose life has been richly adventurous ever comes to a stale and whining old age. With best wishes to all, I am Sincerely, MAT DAVIS 1-0 0'l -4-01' COMPLIMEN TS 9 Of DOUPHRATE HARDWARE COMPANY Gilmer, Texas Compliments Of FOSTER'S snoz s'ronE THE FASHION SHOP South Side of Square Jeanne Hunt, Owner Ready'To-Wear 8z Accessories FINE WATCHES 8l DIAMONDS BULOVA T U L L Y 7 S DIAMONDS ELGIN RINGS HAMILTON GIFTS COMPLETE LINE OF STERLING SILVER AND CHINA TULLY SIMPSON JEWELERS TULLY SIMPSON Phone 159 BENNIE HASTEN G0 0'20'l0l0'0N0v0l0' - 'QX COMPLIMEN TS Of GILMER MOTOR COMPANY Gilmer, Texas MORRIS GROCERY 8.
