A large portion of our life in- volves the school whose curriculum is modeled in such a way as to aid us in our future life. The 1970 SHIELD is dedicated to a person who has helped mold each of us into a better human being. He has coped with our problems and has been a model for us to follow. We dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Curtis G. Gives A Voice And A Purpose To Students Sponsors Mrs. Phyllis Fisher Mrs. Ann Shelton The Student Cooperative Association completes many worthwhile projects during the year. In fulfilling its purpose to provide a forum for student expression; the S.C.A. gives the student body a voice, often improving the conditions of Giles High. Led by President Gordon Hylton, the S.C.A. conducted class officer elections, sponsored a second “Spring Fling”, scheduled assemblies, and sent representatives to both District and State meetings. Ricky Carr served as District Reporter. 18 Tommy Groseclose-Chaplain, Mike Johnson-Parliamentarian Self-Evaluation Committee School Improvement Committee Finance Committee Student Welfare Committee Public Relations Committee 19 Giles National Scholorship The purpose of the National Honor Society is to recognize outstanding scholarship. Other qualities taken into consideration for membership are character, service and leadership. Members are elected by the faculty or a faculty committee. Students from the junior class, to be eligible for the New River Chapter, must have at least a 3.5 average. Candidates from the senior class must have at least a 3.1 5 average. From the profit on stationery sales the Chapter has been able to award a scholarship to a Giles High School graduate for the past two years. The recipient is chosen from the entire senior class by a faculty committee which the Chapter members select. National Honor Society mem- bers are also available for individual tutoring. Character Mrs. Anne Danahy— Sponsor 20 Honor Society Service Leadership Key Club Continues Stimulating Work Affiliated with the Pearisburg Kiwanis Club, the Key Club is a service organization. Activities were centered around the theme, “Understanding, the Pathway to Human Dignity”. The club also sponsored Slave Day, the Harvest Ball, and the Miss G.H.S. Pageant. “What! The Monogram Club is a newly formed organization at Giles High School. The purpose of this organization is to provide a means of association for those boys who have excelled in athletics and to help further the athletic program at Giles High School. The Monogram Club assists lettermen in paying for their jackets and sweaters. They also sponsor the concession stand at basketball games. Monogram Club Has Successful Year 24 Jr. Tri-Hl-Y Collects For Heart Fund The Jr. Tri-Hi-Y under the di- rection of Mrs. Ruby Hylton, had a very active year. In the fall, the Jr. Tri-Hi-Y was well represented at the annual District Conference in Floyd County. In fulfilling their purpose of service, members sent food and gifts to a family at Christmas, collected for the Heart Fund, and helped the F.C.A. with a canned food drive. Projects of this nature include keeping a coat check at home basketball games, placing thought-for-the-day posters in every classroom, and sending Christmas baskets. Members also sponsor a patient at the South- western State Hospital. The Sr. Tri-Hi-Y helped sponsor the V.P.I. Glee Club at a spring assembly. For these services the Sr. Tri-Hi-Y received the Ace Award for its sixth consecutive year when members traveled to the annual M.G.A. in Richmond. Membership is composed of boys at Giles High interested in moral and spiritual values. Club activities for the year included a “basketball shoot” and a dance after one of the basketball games. Miles talks of “Clean Speech.” 28 “All this to be a Future Farmer?” The FFA is organized to develop agricultural leader- ship, cooperation, and citizenship. Activities of the Chapter include participation in local and state judging contests, an annual Father-Son Banquet, an FFA Basket- ball Tournament and a trip to the annual conference at Blacksburg. Week 29 The Future Homemakers of America work TOWARD NEW HORIZONS by promoting appreciation and satisfaction in the joys of homemaking. The members promote their theme for the year “Make Time Work For You” by working to strengthen bonds within the family and between the family and community. Sponsoring an Open House at Christmas and attending Federation meetings are two of the chapter’s activities. Mrs. Rosetta Wheeler-Sponsor F.H.A. Unites Boys Of Various Sports In striving to promote Christianity through athletes and athletics, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes undertook many worthwhile projects during the year. The members sponsored a canned food drive during the winter, announced home basketball games, aided the Jaycees with their Annual Christmas shopping tour, and col- lected for the March of Dimes at school. In the fall, the boys attended a breakfast in their honor. Members plan projects at meeting. The Future Teachers of America is one of the largest and most active clubs at Giles Higli. Througli its many activities and informative programs, members explore their own interests and abilities in relation to the various fields of teaching. Activities for the year included entertaining the faculty at a “tea”, observing classes in elementary schools, and sponsoring an assembly during National Education Week. Selling pep tags and sponsoring the concession stand for a short time enabled the club to award its fourth scholarship to a graduating member. 37 F.B.L.A. Develops Leaders In Business The Future Business Leaders of America work to develop competent leaders in business and to create more interest and understanding in the intelligent choice of business occupations. Activities of the club include selling candy and sponsoring a “Holly Hop.” Rev. Lowe speaks at program. Members send gifts to Marion patient. 39 Spartonlan Keeps Student Body Ellie Clagett -Feature Editor 40 Spartonian staff members worked long and hard during the year to put together the Spartonian, Giles’s monthly newspaper. The minute word was passed that the Spartonian was ready, news-conscious students flocked to buy their copy. Each issue featured Giles news and kept students up-to-date on school activities. The Library Club stimulates an interest among students in the use of books and encourages students to consider librariansliip as a career. Students Develop An Understanding Of Modern Business D.E.C.A. promotes understanding and appreciation for the responsibilities of citizenship in the world of free, competitive enterprise. Members of the club develop a better understanding of marketing and distribution. Each year the members print and sell the programs for Giles’s football games. Sr. Science Club Explores The World of Scienee The Sr. Science Club promotes an interest and understanding of science. Their motto is SCIENCE: THE KEY TO THE EUTURE. The club sponsors the Giles County Science Fair and sends representatives to the Regional Fair. Through the use of fdms, songs, and maga- zines, members strive to “Lernt Deutscldand Kennen”, “Learn About Germany.” Through their hard work, members made the call “Spudnuts for sale!” familiar and popular with the students of Giles Higlt School. Activi- ties include films, songs, skits, and speakers. Eileen Dowdy and Chris Cramer were Queen and King of the annual Mardi Gras. Cheerleaders give much of their time to cheer for J.V. football and basketball games and pep rallies. The Giles Symphonic Chorale is a select group of sixty students chosen througli individual auditions. This year the group performed in many programs, both at Giles and at various locations in the surround- ing area. Chorale members leave on a day trip. 63 Marching Formation The Giles High Senior Band Brass 64 Percussion “THE 1969 GILES HIGH SENIOR BAND”- These familiar words were heard during each halftime performance as the one hundred-piece band took the field. Summer practice brought the desired results, imaginative drills executed with precision. Enthusiasm at pep rallies was boosted by the addition of the pep band. Parades gave the public an opportunity to see another facet of musical accomplishment. Develops Talent The Junior Band is solely a training period for those wishing to enter the Giles High Senior Band. Under the direction of Mr. Archie Snyder, the members present two annual concerts. Mem- bers believe in the dignity of work, the American way of life, education, fair play, satisfaction achieved by good work, and high moral and spiritual standards. During the year, V.I.C.A. competes in dis- trict and state contests, and aids civic organizations with their projects. Placing first in state competition were James Allen Dowdy in Machine Shop and Betty Kirk in Currents Events. The club is spon- sored by Mr. Don Brookman. The theme of dance, “A Winter’s Night Dream” was illustrated througlr decorations of snowflakes, evergreen branches, and the traditional Christmas tree. The evening was highlighted by the presentation of the Snow Court. Those chosen were Barbara Warner, Queen; Barbara Morris, Carolyn Taylor, Beverly Bandy, and Suzanne Deheart as prin- cesses. The evening drew to a close with a feeling of Christmas lingering upon everyone. KrLra W. n ior f r’u ' orrii rinceii Prin cei5 79 Sue Ellen Stafford APRIL LOVE MISS GHS 1970 On the evening of April 18, Sue Ellen Stafford was crowned Miss GHS 1970. The event is sponsored annually by the Key Club. The theme “April Love” was truly illustrated through the scenery and the 34 lovely contestants. The evening concluded with the naming of 1st and 2nd runners-up, Carolyn Taylor and Vicky Ratcliffe. And, of course, GHS’ “April Love”, Sue Ellen Stafford. Girls’ and Boys’ State convene annually, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, and American Legion Dept, of Va., respectively. Both are also aided with the co-operation of many civic and school groups. The purpose of both is to provide citizenship training for boys and girls of high school age; to open an opportunity of hving together as self- governing ci tizens, and to inform them about their duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship. This year’s representatives to Girls’ and Boys’ State are Virginia Johnston, Melanie Irvin, Charlie Andrews, Curtis Caldwell, and Mike Montgomery. The girls will go to Radford College; the boys, to the College of William and Mary. Our representative for Camp Enterprise is Ricky Carr. He will be sponsored by Celanese Corp. Camp Enterprise offers young men a chance to get a behind-the-scenes view of the challenges, opportun- ities, and rewards of a career in management. (not pic.) 83 UP UP AND AWAY Trombone Trio compete for prize Up, Up and Away was the title theme of 1970 Senior Talent Show. A combination of 17 acts of various talents entertained an audience for the evening of March 14. It ended an enjoyable evening for all. M.K. Gutwald, 1st prize Second place winners 84 During the second week of May, Juniors were deco- rating, refinishing, touching up, and worrying about the evening of May 9. All their troubles were truly rewarded as they presented the Senior Class “Came lot.” As the evening drew to a close, “Camelot”, once again, became a legendary tale. Varsity Football The Spartan football team, “Big Blue,” completed its first season under Coach Bill Lloyd and came up with favorable results. Tliis year the team won three games, tied one, and out played nearly every team on the schedule. For the first time in the liistory of Giles High, the Spartans had two players make the All-District first team. Williams around the end. 91 Gautier churns for extra yardage.
