Athletic events, the prom gradua- tion, and other prominent occasions affected us, as did smaller, more personal happenings in our school. To preserve these memories, the 1968 SHIELD includes both outstanding events and typical everyday occurences of our school. The SHIELD also emphasizes a truth important to everyone. ‘‘For everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven.” Unless each student apportions his time wisely, he is unable to excel in both academic and extracurricular activities. Therefore, we learn to respect the value of time and to use it wisely. Devotion to Giles High Earns Mrs. Jean H. Bane ’68 SHIELD Dedication With great pride and pleasure, we of the 1968 SHIELD staff dedicate this yearbook to one who has dedicated herself to the best interests of Giles High School, Having graduated from Radford College, she taught at Pearisburg High School where she earned a reputation as an outstanding math teacher. When Giles High School was established seven years ago, she was named Assistant Director of Guidance; and in 1966, she became Director of Guidance. In addition, this person has diligently served as sponsor of the senior class for a number of years. We are proud to have apersonofher rare qualities as a part of our school. Her patience, tact, sincerity, and friendliness endear her to those she helps. Finally her exceptional knowl- edge and judgement make her advice worthy of the most careful consideration. For her devotion to Giles High School, the 1968 SHIELD is dedicated to MRS. JEAN HYPES BANE. A Look at Spartanland Reveals . . . Reading and Writing . . . Aid in understanding a point . . . the library - a quiet place for research . . . must prove to teach ers we know something after all ... tests - a necessary evil . . . cramming for a test before school . . . the classroom - headquarters for learning. Spirit and Sportsmanship A tribute to devoted cagers . . . enthusiasm ran high . . . little things to bolster spirit . . . but still a disappointing season for the dedicated Spartans . . . good sportsmanship on the part of our athletes and supporters . . . Come on, boys! Let ' s do it again ! 7 Fun and Friendship Daily conferences between friends during class . . Slave Day - an annual celebration . . . friends to- gether after school . . . during school . . . and, of course, at the school dances . . . friends gathered together at their spot for fun and relaxation before the grind begins. and Just Plain Nonsense The Las Vegas Room” at G.H.S. ... muddy tennis shoes - a symbol of effort ... a little neatness for the boys . . . and rah-rahs for the faculty . . . The Insufferables . . . people freezing, all for the love of a football game. A Time To Plant . . . 4 10 . . . A Time To Reap FACULTY 12 Mr. Coulson Liked, Respected in First Year at G.H.S. Mr. Curtis G. Coulson, Principal of Giles High, earned his B. A. degree from Lynchburg College and his M.Ed. degree from the University of Virginia. Before coming to Giles High School he served as principal of an elementary school in Christians burg. He now makes his home in Pearisburg with his wife, Patsy, and two boys, David and C. G., Jr. Mr. Coulson has capably and efficiently handled the problems of Giles High. One of his most admir- able traits is the friendly and sincere interest he takes in the students. We hope that this year will be his first of many pleasant years as Principal of Giles High School. Mr. Conner Excels as Assistant Principal A graduate of Concord College, Mr. Larry Conner first taught and coached at Princeton Junior High School. In 1965, he came to Giles as Physical Education instructor and head basketball coach. Mr. Conner has served as Assistant Principal since September, 1966. He now lives in Pearisburg with his wife and three sons. Whether as athletic director, regulator of attendance, disciplinarian, or assistant to the Principal, Mr. Conner ' s strong, yet fair, handling of problems has gained him high re- spect. Guidance Helps Students Plan Their Futures A strong point in the faculty of Giles High is the Guidance Department, where Mrs. Jean Bane and Miss Pam Croy take an active interest in each student. In scheduling, each student is given expert advice as to which cur- riculum would be best for him. Group guidance sessions and personal conferences aid students in determining their futures. Between them, Mrs. Bane and Miss Croy possess such a vast amount of knowledge that they can help one solve almost any school problem. iff Director of Guidance MRS. JEAN H. During those years there were times for success and times for disappointment. Nonetheless, looking back at our high school years, most of us will remember them as the happiest years of our lives. For everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven. Our eighth grade year, 1963-1964, was a time to adjust to our new environment. Each of the 256 members of our class soon was accustomed to the routines of high school life. Courses of study and eighth grade sports prepared us for our later high school years, while friendships inseparably united the Class of ' 68. As freshmen. Bill Danahy, Mary Beth Edwards, Donna Carol Martin, and Gilbert Wilkerson led the class as we constructed our first homecoming float. For the first time, our class members participated in junior varsity and var- sity sports. Among our courses were foreign languages, algebra, speech, world history, and world geography. Elec- tion of two of our class members to S.C. A. offices climaxed a year that for upperclassmen had been a time to rec- ognize our potential. The sophomore year our class members entered most organizations in the school. Meanwhile, our athletes aided the school to an excellent basketball season and the district championship in golf. Geometry, distributive education, business math, and biology became parts of our school program. As officers, Steve Donovan, Mary Beth Edwards, Pam Carr, Marsha Mann, and Judy Kirk led the class. Over all, the sophomore year was a time to participate more actively in school activities. Our junior year, featuring courses such as chemistry, Algebra II, English, mechanical drawing, shorthan d, Dis- tributive Education II, was for each student a time to prepare himself for his future. Intensive career planning, accompanied by ability and achievement, enabled us to understand better our potentialities. In our junior year, we 56 m W W ■ 4 also began to accumulate honors and to participate more actively in student activities. Seventeen of our class mem- bers were inducted in the Honor Society. In addition we began to make ourselves known athletically, as the basket- ball team, led by second team All-District Robert King, finished a fine season with a seven game winning streak. Measuring for class rings made us realize that we, the Class of 1968, were almost Seniors. As class officers, Alex Neely, David Coulthard, Barbara Blevins, Ted Johnson, and Janet Atchison organized the sale of candy to finance our Junior-Senior Prom, Wonderland by Night. Altogether, the junior year was a time to work. Our senior year was filled with many memorable moments. Under our leadership, several organizations reached unprecedented heights. Honor was brought to our class when the Seniors won the girls basketball class tournament and when the Klassroom Kwiz team achieved victory before an enormous audience. We were proud, too, when our own Mary Beth Edwards was named Mountain Lake ' s first Junior Miss. No day was more exciting than October 13, 1967, when we received our class rings and played our homecoming game. Our talent show, Psychedelic ' 68, was a tre- mendous success, largely because of the dedication of our officers, Ted Johnson, Mike Journell, Janet Atchison, Bar- bara Blevins, and Brenda Fern. In the spring, the trip to the Barter Theater, the prom, Paradise Isle, and the Awards Assembly provided us with many pleasant memories. The Baccalaureate and the Graduation solemnly com- pleted our Senior year - a time to lead - and our high school careers. Our high school years are now history. Each of us must proceed into the world to see what we can individually accomplish. A greater percentage (44.2%) of our class will pursue higher education than of any previous class. Those of us not continuing our educations also expect to contribute to the society in which we live. Thus, each of the 197 of us will find that there is a place for us. 57 Class of ' 68 - - time off . . . To do this, more money was required, so our staff worked diligently to break both the advertisement and subscription records. As a result, we are able to provide more complete coverage of school activities in a colorful, attractive manner. We hope the SHIELD is more meaningful and more unified because of the use of our theme, For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven. Their destination was West Virginia ' s lovely State 4-H Camp, Jackson ' s Mill. While on tour, the Symphonic Chorale presented concerts at Roosevelt -Wilson and Victory High Schools in Clarksburg, South Harrison High School in West Milford and Lewis County High School in Weston. Aside from these concerts, the Symphonic Chorale sang for a con- vention that was taking place at Jackson ' s Mill. Even though Tour calls for hard work, the Chorale always finds time for recreation. The members found enjoyment in sports and danc- ing at Jackson ' s Mill, bowling and their short but interesting tour of a glass factory. The Chorale returned Sunday, May 19. They were all tired but happy because they had completed the very enjoyable and successful Spring Tour 1968. Giles Band Travels to in One Performance! Apple Blossom Festival On Wednesday, May 1, 1968, the Giles High Senior Band left for the annual Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester, Va. The band arrived at Luray, Va. that evening where they were lodged while on the trip. Thursday morning the band members toured the famous Luray Caverns before leaving for Winchester, 45 miles away to compete in the Fireman ' s Parade. Following the parade they returned to Luray. On Friday, they again headed for Win- chester and the Grand Parade. With the thermometer on 90 the band marched six miles to the tune of Sounding Brass and a perfect drum cadence. Tired and with blis- tered feet they returned to Luray to a party and dance. The band returned to Giles County on Saturday, May 4, with lingering, happy memories of a very enjoyable trip. 00 Seniors Win Class Tourney! Despite the record the boys gave the Giles rooters plenty of action. This is evident in the fact that the team won four games in the statistic book but were unable to win on the score - board. Lack of experience was the biggest factor in determining the outcome of the season, for many of the athletes on last year ' s team, which was tied for third place in the district, had graduated. Although this season didn ' t look very good the experience gained by the younger players was invaluable towards building a top-notch team for next year. Lack of depth in the pitching staff and in other positions also had a great bearing on the outcome of the season. 172 Junior Varsity Baseball 173 Net Men Have a Fair Season FIRST ROW: Charley Edwards, Mike Johnson, Jimmy Johnston, George Webb, Mike Munsey, SECOND ROW: Steve Albert, Jimmy Hankins, Roger Perdue, Tommy Givens, Steve McMahan The youthful tennis team had a disappointing spring.
