SEATED: Earl Jones, Presidentg L. B. Hoy, Superintendent: R. T. Stokes, W. H. Lunbeck Missouri law provides that school districts in which there is a city of the fourth class shall be governed by a board of six di- rectors. Two members are elected every year for aterm of three years. This provision lends continuity and stability, and enables the board to plan for future needs. The board and superintendent work out the general policies of the school. Details involved in administration are left to the prin- cipals. It is the policy of the board and faculty members to promote such measures as will make better citizens of the students. The community is obligated to provide educational opportunity to the students. On the other hand, the students are obligated to take advantage of the opportunities offered. Members of the board serve without monetary reward. Their only compensation lies in the fact that they are rendering a worth- while service to the community. L. B. HOY B. S. in Education S.E. Mo. State College A. M. University of Mo. When Mr. Hoy assumed the duties of superintendent, there were onl eleven faculty mem- bers angsix hundred students. During his administration, the faculty has increased to forty- four and the annual enrollment to sixteen hundred. The Gid- eon School system has recently been assigned an AA rating by the State Department of Edu- cation. Only school systems offering a minimum of 34 If2 approved high school units and meeting other standards can be classified as AA. Mr. Hoy has served as pres- ident of the Southeast Missouri Teachers Association and as a member of the Advisory Com- mittee under two state superin- tendents. For a number of years he was a member of the Legislative Committee of the Missouri State Teachers Associ- ation. He is recognized as dean of New Madrid County School men. - EVELYN WILCOXIN Secretary SUPERINTENDENT CARL D. GUM B.S. in Education S,E. Mo. State College A.M. University of Mo. Debat- ing is a science because it deals with systematized knowledge, it is an art because it involves the application of that knowledge. The Gideon High School debate teams experienced a very suc- cessful l95Z-53 season. Both "A" and "B" teams won more de- bates than they lost. Our "A" squad, competing with ten other schools in the district, ranked fourth. We were justly proud of our "A" squad for only three other schools won more debates than our teams. It is an interesting as well as profitable Club. The objectives set out in the Nature Knights program of the Missouri Conservation Commission have been adopted as our ob- jectives. Our weekly meetings have been well planned and interesting. We enjoyed sponsoring the Assembly Program on April Z3rd. with Mr. Jim Jackson, Educational Advisor with the Missouri Conser- vation Commission, as our speaker.
