A super hero from far by sea to rescue Heorot . . . a easting hall built by a benevolent old king called Hrothgar . . . ,a feasting hall that excluded the pleasures of food and music and perpetual celebration and all that was raison d' etre . . . a feasting hall which for years had been ravaged by an evil spirit named Gren- del. Having already proven himself by conquering a picturesgue sea monster, Beowulf goes forth to rid the once beaut1fulfNorthumbrian landscape of destructive Gren el . . . a demon who indeed perishes when his arm is delicately dislodged from its socket by Mr. Wulf. The kingdom is saved Calbeit after disposing of Grendel's mother who took unkindly to the actionj and Heorot restored with the lpleasures of food and music and perpetual celebration and colorful beauty . . . a restoration which permits igger and better glorias to be raised to the local ods addressed as W ds. . Some 1000 odd .years or so later than that 817765, a Virginia gent named Jefferson quilled a Declaration of Independence in, of al places, Philadelphia and shipped it to a king called George which hypothetically rid a small group of new-world co onies from crimson-froeked enforcers from a faraway land . . . taxations without representations Wnislhed and the colonies flourished freely under a hero named after the colonies' capital, as in . . . And in 1974 - some 1224 years anno Beo fA.B.Jg 198 years anno Declara- tion CA.D.J - nasty people still force their thinking on others not so minded and deride and chastize an one who dares step off the magic strai ht and oh so narrow line known as SONFORMITY . . . However you Will ie pleased there are still heroes around the calibre of Messrs. Wulf and Jefferson . . . there's'Susan, Arlene, Anita, Bob, Crow, Mary Jo, Ron, Rita, Cindy, Jami, Kim, Mary Ellen, and John and their hardy friends who cross over from one place fLimboJ and head for another place CGraduationJ and - like the daddy of their country - stray from the straight and narrow in search of the route called independence. A ong the way, they meet and outwit a host of adver- saries in an attempt to follow the path Bobby Frost called, "the one less trav- eled by" and that . . . my friends who sit in wonder at this chronicle of their adventures, is what has made all the difference. This year is a time in which juniors await with eager anticipation their senior year. It is perhaps the first time they find the security of knowing there are many stu- dents younger than they are. And it is a time of making plans for the rest of their lives. The junior year is a year when many students find themselves, if they can only find the time. Sophomores have all the 'fun" of memorizing Mr. Hrivnak's oems, taking Mr. Mill- er's little quizzes of 100 questions, earning the difference between metaphor and simile and deciding what to take up at tech school. Band members should know their left foot from their right by now and they should almost be able to march and play at the same time. Sophomores can also say that a year of experience is necessary in order to win the bell. But most of all, being a sophomore means that there are only two more years le t before you graduate. T ey will remember cho ing on the smoke in the restroom for the first time, fighting for freshman rights in the con- stitution, discovering there are as many stairs in the senior high as in the junior high, and finding out who Mr. Board is. More importantly, though, they will someda real- ize that they are the most important ingredients added to the school each year. Every four years the student body changes, and it is the freshmen who must learn to carry on the Uhlan Tradition. l Karl Brennsheiner, John Hranec 2 - Jackie Pollick, Diana Tiberi, Barb Batis Mary Adams James Ansel Mar Jane Jon Eittinger Bruce Brown Mark Carafa Ann Cheto k Trac Cole Ronald Dean 5 Y Michele Demn Brian Barnhart Bech Darrell Brown Gerald Crable Della Crawford Amy Croushore tol iak .gtrgsilllrummon Darrell Evans , X LJ' a-Yi sq W MF Jfixilxwtgg 'S J ,,,,, ,SV -,N W U-cpl John Farrier Donna Fenton Dawn Ferranti Jimmg Fredrick Gina alie Manila Gardner Theresa Hundlin Sharon Harberer Debbie Hceter Elaine Heeter Scott Hillen' John Hixenbaugh 76 Jeff Keener, Donald Burke, John McMahon ,, l ga 1 11 , r , . if WE W P5 5 il Hsu egg ' ren iin 'Dim Lawson, Robert Smitley, Jim Lawson Rebeou Daruda, Donna Plava ,li S . It's Mr. Blanc taking pictures at every activit , Mr. Miller giv- ing those "little quizzes," Mr. Rossi tugging on his mustache, Mrs. Lofstead clutching lier Kleenex, and Mr. G. displaying his dry wit. But most importantly, it's a group of eople who comprise one of our schooI's most vital assets. Teachers are the men and women who collject all the essential ingredients, mix them with people, and come up with students. 1. Mr. Colebank 2. Miss Dayton 3. M-r. Cockfield 4. N9 Russell Korner Kim Kifus Linda Scharler, Russell, Bob Among the ingredients that make up Ger- man High School is an excellent academic reputation. Although many students excel academically, some have attained recogni- tion from nationally known sources. Russell's achievements this year have been almost staggering. Amon other things, he won 3rd p ace in the 245 District'V.F'.W. Voice of Democracy Contest and was a county, district, and lnterdistrict winner in the American Legion Oratorical Contest. At the beginnin of the school year, the senior class c ose three girls who best exem- plified the qualities of honest ,lo alty, dependability, and citizenship. 'Ilhe fsaculty studied the qualities of each and chose Kim to receive the award. She then participated in state contests. . Linda won first place in the American Le 'on essay contest, "Pride in My Country andq Hope in the Future." Russel and Bo won second and third places, respectively. German boasted all the contest winners. Bob later won a district award and competed in state competition. Bob became the first student in the history of German High to become a National Merit Scholarship Finalist. After qualifyin as semi-finalist with the result of his PSiT! NMSQT, Bob was judged on the basis of his SAT score and school activities to attain a Finalist standing. The National Merit Scholarship Corpora- tion recognized Anita and Paul with a letter of Commendation, as a result of their PSAT! NM SQT scores. Anita competed against senior girls for the Betty Crocker Award and came away the winner. Sponsored by the Betty Crocker Company, the award is given to the one sen- ior girl in each high school who scores high- eston their test on home living. The 1973-1974 Student Council endeavored to re-establish a firm foundation for student government at German. The first constitu- tion in the history of the school was written in the fall and ratified by the entire student body by late winter. In it, election regulations and Student Council procedures were explained in detail. During the school term, after-school dances were held as student activities. The council raised money for charitable causes by selling pizza and popcorn at athletic events and selling candles in school. On several occasions, the legislature was unsuccessful. Efforts to establish a hall patrol failed after considerable controversy. Although attempts were made to secure a new scoreboard for Sangston Field, no scoreboard materialized. Other projects, such as a student handbook, have been geared toward future years. Hopefully, through the efforts of this and future student coun- cils, as well as the untiring help of Mr. Bowers, student government will become an increasingly important ingredient at German Town- ship. li A,,, lntennediame Unit Forum Representatives: Pom Marcinek, Mary Jo Sichko. Donnelly Chapter National Honor Society An im ortant ingredient of our school is the Itlnational Honor Society. Under the leadership of the new sponsor Mrs. Lofstead, it participated in many wor- thy rojects. Showing the spirit of citi- zensliip and service which the society represents, members collected money for the March of Dimes Fund. Scholar- ship and leadership were demonstrated when the club selected two of its mem- bers to participate in the National Honor Society Scholarship Contest. The members showed their originality by planning a new program for the induc- tion ceremony held on April 25. For the first time in the histor of our chapter, sophomores were indbiicted as provi- sional members. Also at this ceremony, it was announced that the name of the - , society was being changed to the Adam J. Donnelly Chapter to onor a man who has served at German Township for . Ask any band member, majorette or color guard and you might get these answers: "Building a showboat out of used lumber , . ." "The time Maryann Tretinek forgot the color guard flags. . .at an away game. . ." "Giving Mr. Gahrin a calculator at the band concert . . . 'iPlaying Raymond Overture over and over and over "The majorettes going to camp for the first time and getting a red ribbon . . . " "Pulkas in the back of the clarinet section." "Dance Band practicing after school for the Uhlan Review." "Playing 'The Horse' for the wrong football team." "Waiting until Mr. Gabrin finished yelling at Bob Smit- ley: 'You s'posed to be smart?" "Kim Kifus spraying perfume on the band bus . . . " "The majorettes and color guard vs. the brass section on the bus. . ." "The combination of cold nights, short shorts, and cold batons . . . " 'lWhat ever happened to the majorettes frisbees?" "Polishing your white bucs the night before and having to march in mud at the game. . . " "Working out a routine in succession for nine people and having three absent at the game. . . " Like any set of fleeting impressions, these thoughts take shape only when joined together to form memories. If you weren't in the band, you probably see the band as simply a musical part of the overall confusion associated with pep rallies, football games, etc, However if you were in the band, you were a part of something special . . . and you have the memories to prove it. Laureola Staff It is six minutes 'til nine in the evening and my faithful staff members are here in Mr. Martin's room with me. I graduated a week ago but I am still searching throu h what's left of my creativity to finish the iaureola. For one year we have talked amon ourselves, speculating on whether you would like the book. And now, as you read this, I realize that yan have probably already decided how you i eit. I owe a great deal of thanks to my staff for all their hard work, to the faculty for their cooperation, and to the students for their interest. But most of all, I would like to acknowledge and thank Mr. Martin as the advisor of the editorial staff, Mr. Rossi as the advisor of the business staff, and Mr. New- man for almost all of the art work you see in the book. It's true - this is probably the wierdest, most unconventional yearbook yiou have ever seen. From the pizza theme to t e strange "P and R Production" commercials, this Laureola captures a different element of student life. We made our yearbook different because we thought the 1973-74 student bodfy deserved something unique -- an all out ef ort. I hope you like t e Laureola in its new image, even if it doesn't have a red and black plastic cover, rows and rows of portraits, boring, say-noth- ing write-ups, and typical faculty pictures. We tried to capture the spirit and personality of the school rather than just go through the motions to capture the images of the school year. I really hope you enjoy the book. iEdQ?.-tg ,R -V lm TA-DAH! Our Business Manager: Kim Our Editor: Bob , L- ' Q. With barely enough boys to field a team, the tradition was about to end. Some wrestling fans wondered if there would even be a team. After finishing with a disappointing 3-9 dual meet record, against tough competition, the Uhlan grapplers came back strong to take fourth place in the Section 6B Tournament. The senior wrestlers went out in st le with all six seniors that wrestled, placing first, second, third, or fourth. The Uhlan's seventh senior wrestler, 145- gounder Mark Vavreck, suffered a disappointing ack injury which pulled him from the tourna- ment. 112-pound, team captain, Darwin Stalnaker, pinned down his third section title with 3 consecu- tive falls. Bob McCahill at 119, lost a close decision to the W.P.I.A.L. runner-up and placed second in the event. Don Stalnaker fought knee problems all year and became section runner-up for the second year in a row. 167-gounder Bob Croushore come a long way as he Pgra bed a third place. irstkyear senior wrestlers Ron Keslar and Larry ise took the third and fourth spots in Heavyweight and 132 pound class. Darwin Stalnaker won the California College Christmas Tournament Cham ionship with Bob McCahill and Bob Croushore taking fourths. The underclassmen also fared well in the sec- tional tourney. Juniors Roy Floyd and Ed Young were third in the 98 and 105 pound classes, while sophomore Mark McCahill finished second at 91. Geno Tiberi, Mark Mergen, Jim Constable, and Ed Chapley gained much needed experience and came throu h with some key victories. J .V.'s Riga Opiemblowsky, Paul Rozak and Lou Ansel showed signs of brig tness and qualities of future varsity wrestlers. Under the leadership of Coach Moncheck, the Junior High wrestling team made several fine showings in dual meets and Junior Olympics. Greg Bvnum was chosen as the most valuable Junior High wrestler. A light haze danced gently across the tops of trees Whose leaves were still the dark green of spring. Here and there a thin column of smoke Easily pushed itself through the fog. ' The pleasant odor of fresh y mown grass permeated the air. And occasionally I noticed changes in flowery fragrances. The air was very still as it surrounded me, Heavy and warm, like the water in a quiet summer pond. Elder y couples gently rocked on their porch swings. Breaking the silence with incessant creaking. , Little girls playing tacg frivolously cavorted over the lawns, ,And noisy little bolys onned make-believe guns For' a vigorous ma e-believe war. Only now does the haze settle groundward, The smoke disappear. 1 The birds sto singing ik. 51. And crickets liegin their vigilant chirp. ' ' ' The smoke spreads out, . Reaching my nostrils, ,,-I- , And deadens the sweet smell of grass and flowers. - " " Elderliy folkgeave their porch swings to the mercy of the gentle A, ., nig t Win s, Y...
