V Q 4 v U 5 4 The l 46 if elm Down underground there are networks of streets-main highways, side streets, cross streets, and back alleys-arranged much like the plan of a town and frequently extei 'ng through an area of several square miles. Obviously these are not fcgdential. They are passage-ways of mines from which coal, the miner- al wealth of our section of the earth, is removed. Coal and iron are the twin sisters that have made the iron and steel industry great. Coal is abundant near Pittsburgh and helps to explain why that city is the worldls leading center of iron and steel manufacture and sometimes called the eapital of steeldom. Coal is not only plentiful in this territory but much of it is the best quality for making good metallurgical coke, which is indispensable in pro- ducing high quality pig iron. Coking coal is obtained in the Connellsville region which lies 30 to 45 miles south and southeast of Pittsburgh, from what is known as the Pittsburgh', or 'KConnellsville,l seam. VVe folks of German Township live in the center of the newer Connellsville region and the very recently opened coal fields of Greene County known as the Klondike.l, GERMA TOW HIP HIGH SCHOOL 2 No, we do not hesitate to touch coal for fear of soiling our hands for we know that it is principally carbon, the same element We find in the sparkling dia- mond that milady Wears on her pretty finger. But coal is of far greater value to mankind than diamonds. It retains the en- ergy which Was absorbed from the sun by the forests of ages ago, and, when burned, releases that energy to produce heat and power. It might be called canned heat from the sunl'-it is the energizing force which makes the Wheels of industry go around. 3 OLLI' Sckoof 5 3111 illlvmnriam - THOMAS REED FRANKS Ocfober I4, I9I6 April I6, l945 Thomas Reed Franks, a member of the German Township High School fac- ulty, lost his life while serving his country. At the time of his death, he was serv- ing on the U.S.S. Bryant. Mr. Franks entered the United States Navy on December 3, 1943, as an En- sign and on April 1, 1945, was raised in rank to Lieutenant Junior Grade. This fact he never knew as he was at sea at the time of this promition. Lieutenant Franks was buried in the National Cemetery on the Zamami Is- land, Kerama Relto. Thomas Reed Franks was graduated from German Township High School with the class of 1933, and received his AB. degree from Waynesbilrg College in 1937, where he was active in the Phi Lamba Theta fraternity and a member of the wrestling squad. Here at German he taught Mathematics, Biology, and Eng- lish, and was the sponsor of the hall patrol and the bus sergeants. We soon became well acquainted and liked our school life. Our Sophomore year started sadly but ended happily after we had succeeded in conquering our greatest enemies, Ancient History, Biology, Latin, Algebra, and English. Starting our Junior year we entered more in the social activities of our school life. They were the class of ,47, with four years stretched before them-years of work and worry, pleasure and entertainment.Years which will never be forgotten, because of the memories they hold. It didn't take long to become accustomed to the traditions of the school, and the Freshmen soon learned what was expected of them. A bit timid at first, they took part in school affairs rather hesitantly, later with zeal and enthusiasm. The Freshman-Sophomore party was looked forward to eagerly, and will be remembered far into the future. The class chose for their first officers: President, Rudy Dulikg Vice President, Beverly Franks, Secretary, Elizabeth Latsko, and Treasurer, Rudolph Matyas. Back to school after a pleasant vacation, friendships and activities WCl'C renewed, and school life began again. As Sophomores, we chose for our President, Eleanor Gurick, Vice President, Gertrude Christobek, Secretary, Louise Yakavac, and Treasurer, Mary Spenik. Members of the class partici- pated in assemblies, athletics, and other school events. The highlight of the year was our Sophomore party, which is still remembered happily by those who attended it. Our second year went all too quickly, and before we had time to realize it, we were Juniors. At long last we had become upper classmenf' We obtained capable leadership with the election of Joseph Horvat, President, Eleanor Gurick, Vice President, James Parker, Secretary, and Mary Spenik, Treasurer. And as Juniors, the course of events changed. Instead of the usual party, we had a semi- formal prom in the high school gymnasium. It held the interest of not only Juniors but the whole school. No, February 22 will not be easily forgotten. Neither will we forget the splendid musical put on by the Junior class. This took the place of the customary play, and was undoubtedly a great suc- cess. During those years the activities had been curtailed but now that peace has been restored we Freshmen plan to fill our next three years with many events. We have already attained a fine start and hope our class of '49 will be regarded as one of which the school will be justly proud. We accept the traditions and responsibilities they give us. When looking for a capable president we chose Shirley Franks. Fred Cochrane was elected our Vice President. Victor Kordella fills the Secretary's oHice and Marlene Taylor the Treasurer's. The officers of the upper classes were very helpful in all of our activities. The highlight of this year was the Freshman party which was attended by a large number of the students. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and we Wish to thank the teachers who as- sisted us. To a few of us, this book represents Weeks of mental struggles, wastebas- kets full of scratch paper, and dozens of chewed pen- cils. None of us can forget the days when gloom per- vaded at atmosphere in the Laboratory when we re- ceived letters from the printer, engraver, and cover manufacturer, all carrying tales of woe about short- ages in materials and Workers, etc. But We managed to replace the gloom with light hearts and smiles. Lau- rels for the idea of coal-mining as a theme go to Mr. Lloyd Wright who insisted that it could be done. When spring came and our dummy began to re- semble a yearbook, we relaxed slightly. The large and competent staff headed by the faculty advisor, Mr. Frank Hrivnak, and editor, Thomas Elias, did everything in their power to make this yearys editions better than ever before. Working in cooperation with the Photography Club and the Uniontown Newspapers, more pictures were used, making our news sheet more interesting. No high school paper is complete without a sports section and ours was ably written by Albert Kermes. Each class was represented by its own reporters. Senior reporters were: Jane Kennison, Rita Dragan, Andriana Molley, Dolores Richard- son, Julia Samons, Vera Ross, and Steve Matsko. Those responsible for the Junior class news were: Eleanor Gurick, Eleanor Newcomer, Lois Shea, Carolyn Desko, Louise Yakovac, Marion Lawrence, Mary Lou Clemsic, Angela Tucci, Mary Spi- nek, Sam Haigh, Frances Nevlud, Eleanor McCahill, Mary L. The typists were: Regina Bashinsky, Arbutus Lewis, and Harriet Smell. The German Hi News provides an opportunity for creative writing. Among the many other activities of the club was a trip to Pittsburgh. An afternoon was spent at the Buhl Planetarium where a lecture entitled Plastic and Synthetic Resinsv was en- joyed. This first organization was known as the Alpha Tri-Hi-Y. Later, due to our increased enrollment a second club, the Beta Tri-Hi-Y, was formed with Miss Mary Murphy as the advisor. At present We have one Tri-Hi-Y Club under the direction of Miss Murphy, with an en- rollment of forty-four members. The Tri-Hi-Y Club is the companion organization of the Hi-Y Club. The f'Tri', in the name is significant of trios of important factors around which the club is built. The club stands for the all-around development of its members in Spirit, Mind, and Body, and it serves our three main train- ing agencies, the Home, Church, and School. Its objectives are 'fTo Seek, To Find, To Sharef, and its slogan is '6Pure Thoughts, Pure Words, Pure Actionsf, 'fSelf-Improvement, Christian Fellowship, United Servicen constitute the club platform. The club colors of Red, White, and Blue express 'fSac- rifice, Purity, and Loyaltyf, and are exemplified in the Triangle, Torch and Circle. The entire pur- pose of the Tri-Hi-Y organization is to Create, Maintain, and Extendv throughout the school and community high standards of Christian character. Last summer we sent two of our members to Camp Buddy, the Tri-Hi-Y Camp at Lake Lynn. These girls enjoyed a profitable two weeks of recreation and training. The chief aim of this organization was to make this the most orderly school in Fayette County. Lloyd Wright and under his leadership has grown to date to be one of the largest and most popular organi- zations in our school. .W The dark-room was used daily by students interested in photography. Starting with simple con- tact prints, beginners soon were making enlargements and photo copies. Members of the Science Club were known as dark-room assistants, and it was their duty to assist and instruct the new members in the use of the dark-room equipment and teach them fundamentals in taking and developing pic- tures. A definite schedule was arranged for each mem- ber with a senior member present to see that an ade- quate supply of developer, hypo, and other needed ma- terials were on hand, also to lend a helping hand when needed. Our team played a nine-game schedule this year. Competing with some of the most powerful teams of the district, Coach Freeman and his assistants put forth un- tiring effort to mould a team. They con- structed a formidable squad regardless of the fact that they emerged victorious in only one contest, tied one, and yielded to their opponents on seven occasions. Even so, the team performed with excep- tional brilliance in spots in spite of the many defeats.
