.ang Brian Hughes Mr, Relph stretches Carolyn out completely. This year's track squad enjoyed a very successful season scoring wins over perennial powers Dysart, Flowing Wells, and Mingus, and losing only to eventual AA Champion Gil- bert. The team's excellent performances at major Invitation- als and the Divisional Championship Meet, along with their dominance in dual meets, established them as one of the strongest teams in the state. The season ended with the Redcoats scoring the best team finishes in school history at the AA Championships. The boys were third with 51 points, and the girls were seventh with 27. Outstanding performances were turned in by David Vaughn, who filled in for the injured Brian Hughes in the 400 relay and who was runner-up in the 300 hurdles, Michele Werton, who finished third in the 800, fourth in the l600, and broke both school records, and the girls 1600 relay of Werton, Leonore Reznick, Natalie King, and Carey Hyler, who broke that school record in finishing sixth. All State honors also went to: the 400 relay teams of Vaughn, BJ Krystek, Joe Gaudio, Paul Briehl fflndj, and Reznick, King, Karen Holland, Suzy Gilb f4thl, Krystek f2ndf200, 3rdf100Dg Briehl t2ndf400, 5thf200J, Francis Nabity f4thfl600, 32005, Suzy Gilb fschool record and 4thflow hurdlesjg Karen Lisiewski Cschool record tie and 4thfhigh jumpj, Holland f5thfhigh jumpj, Matt Ruona f5thf3200J, King f5thf200J, and James Gilb f6thfdiscusl. Head Coach Jim Relph was joined by his largest staff yet, with Assistant Coaches Rob Mitchell, Jim Relph, Jr., Tim Barnes, and Greg Moore. Valuable assistance was provided by Eileen Holland and Lisa Ford. The coaches gave out the following awards: Outstanding Redcoat - Brian Hughes and Suzy Gilb, Outstanding Field Event- James Gilb and JoAnn Yahraus, Outstanding Runner - Francis Nabity and Natalie King, Relay Award - Paul Briehl and Karen Hol- land, Most Improved - David Vaughn and Michele Werton. As the season progressed, the team grew close to each other and showed tremendous love and character. Coaches and officials across the state complimented them on their unity, charity, and drive. The biggest factor in this was un- doubtedly the leadership and example of the senior class. They made themselves and the others the best through hard work, and they grew a lot in the process. There isn't enough room to tell all about the best season in memory - about Joe's hair and the Roger and Gene act of the distance squad, or about Coach Moore's food rules and secret drills. This season was shaved heads and the best boys relays on the planet, Mummy Mountain, Wombas, Gecco-knees, Maynard, and the freshman girls, Paul saying, Am I -, or what? and the disappointment of Divisionals, the Gaudio, Krystek, and Hauser expeditions to the far reaches of civilization, practicing handoffs to Billie Jean at 80 decibels, Brian taking San Manuel by storm and Carey risking all at State, 1983 was finally being one of the best - and having fun. - Rob Mitchell Class of '80 77
