One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sandg one belonging to him, and the other to the Lord. When the last scene of his life flashed before him he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life. -inhg :-- '-is 1... . 'M 'M . '-Y N . xt . . 5 x N 'W 3,4 an ,. . ' A, , . . . W 5 -W 'T.. . f, V. '.,S . Well, it was that time ofyear again when the seniors made the freshmen feel at home. They started off by selling them. Some ofthose frosh went for more than 540, others for less than S5, but no matter the price, the seniors defintely got their moneys worth. After they bought their slaves, they got them together and had them bring them pop, candy, cake, sandwiches, and anything else you could think of. lt was the seniors turn to get all their frustration of four years of high school out. The freshmen guys wore skirts, a shirt inside out and backwards, sandal and tennis shoe, barrettes, balloons in their hair, and they looked like your average freshmen guys. The girls wore guys pants inside out and backwards and their shirts were the same way. They also wore one sandal and one tennis shoe and had balloons and curlers in their hair. Even though all the freshmen were happy when the day ended, it was a very good day in which the seniors welcomed the freshmen to our home. t.,,.. We feltjoy because of 1 little boy's friendship with a crea- ture from outer-space. We felt sorrow bectusc of the tragedies of Lebanon ind El Salvador. We passed time pliying video games. We worried over the Tylenol scare. This was a year that won't be re- mcmbcred for any single event, but rithcr ts a year filled with contadic- tions through which we emerged, hopefully, a little wiser though none the worse for wear. Each student who sold five cans or more forthe St. Mary Food Bank got a free lunch. After the lunch there was the spectacular Powder Puff game. The seniors and sophomores went against the juniors and freshmen. The seniors and sophomores won 6 to 0, with Natalie King scoring the only touchdown. The girls worked hard every day after school to prepare for this game. No matter how bruised they got and even sore, they loved every minute of it. I6 You better watch it. Down, set, hike. Sweethearts Dance at Coronation The Coronation Dance of I983 was a beautiful setting for all the sweethearts that attended. Spon- sored and colorfully decorated by the Senior Class, this dance would not have been such a successful and memorable event without the efforts ofChairman, Claire Friend, DJ, Robert Proctor, and the many other Seniors involved in the prep- aration. The climax ofthe evening was the anticipated announcement ol' the Sweetheart King and Queen - Scott Henry and Jenny Sanders. These two Juniors shared a dance and were congratulated by other nominees, and then enjoyed, with everyone else, the rest ot' the even- ing. This year's Spanish lV class performed the ever-popular Sleeping Beauty for parents, teachers, and students this spring. Though the actors and actresses were nominated for no awards, and probably won't go to Broadway for their production, their play was video- taped and an encore performance given at St. Tercsa's School. Even for those who do not understand Spanish, the play was entertaining and touching. The sandy beaches and tropical environment of Puerto Vallarta seemed to be the ideal place for Gerard's Spanish speakers to practice their Espanol. Thirteen lucky students, Mrs. Labra, Mrs. Berges. and Miss Kochevar spent their Easter vacation on the shores of the Pacific soaking up the rays with their toes in the sand and their worries forgotten. But besides catching rays and waves, these Phoenieians took parachute and boat rides. and, most challenging and risky of all, dared to ride in the death-defying Mexican taxis. 2l OUR FAVORITES FAVORITE BAND Rush FAVORITE ALBUM Escape by Journey FAVORITE SONG 'Down Under by Men at Work FAVORITE RADIO STATION KDKB FAVORITE MOVIE FAVORITE CELEBRITY Sylvester Stallone FAVORITE RESTAURANT Lunt Avenue Marble Club What We Liked in '83 Beal Movic - li.'l'.'A xg:-f ,ram ,n -K 15235 ,.,,.. GU This year's MDA Superdance is one event that the fifty participants will remember for a long time. These students were no doubt tired after having danced twelve long hours, but their efforts were by no means use- less. The lives of many muscular dys- trophy-stricken children will be made a little bit more comfortable because of the 52,500 that Gerard students raised for them. Derek Longstaff, who collected over S400 in pledges, will be responsible for the opportunity twelve eager children will have to at- tend Jerry Lewis' MDA Summer Camp, an experience which is regard- ed by all attendants as one of the most memorable and rewarding of their lives. Chairman Mary Johnson, who has been a Summer Camp volunteer, knows the rewards of helping these children, as can be witnessed in her dedication in organizing the the dance. Robert Proctor and Brian Cahill were the volunteer DJ's, who succeed- ed in keeping aching feet moving and fatigued participants enthusiastic. 24 John and Noelle make dancing easier for their sleepy friend. The guys who kept 'cm dancing Christian Philosoph Gains for Gerard The community of students, facul- ty, staff, and parents of Gerard Catholic High School is dedicated to following the philosophy that they should represent the values of Chris- tianity, values that are of highest pri- ority in the formation of the whole person. The educative process is re- garded as a means of guiding students in developing a faith that is alive, con- scious and active, while enhancing the dignity of every student by pursu- ing academic excellence and encour- aging a spiritual, social, emotional and physical development. The community of Gerard Catho- lic has been guided by these ideals since l962, when it was founded, and during the past year has gone through a long evaluative process which has given all members a comprehensive view of how well these ideals have been adhered to. The evaluators, all professional educators, commended Gerard Catholic High School as hav- ing lived its philisophy, being an ex- plicit sign of Christian life, as evi- denced by a persuasive spirit of unity and genuine concern for oth- ers. The entire community of Gerard Catholic participated during this year of self-evaluation, and many, such as Dr. Brandt, the faculty, and the stu- dents, put in endless hours of work and effort, and succeeded in honestly evaluating the school. Gerard was found to truly be a special kind of place, where, as a community we all pray, work, play, share, care for one another, and grow together in Christ. The process was one which, like many other activities of Gerard, promoted spirit and unity. And though we have been accomplishing our goals for many years, we now have finally re- ceived an official stamp of approval, and certificates and letters of accredi- tation by the North Central Associ- ation and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in conjunction with the Western Catholic Education Association. ccreditation After this there are only 79 trees left to plant .4 w A ll -4- WNKMQV- Y r . .4 my . f'v3'.-'13 w'L5ff. - Q X -Ng .gg if A ' . , E 5.5, fgw,-f,,. . kfky I I iv' ,, sl' ,. hu aa. vm . 55'. The Executive Student Council of the 1982-83 school year demonstrat- ed the exceptional qualities that go into making the year more enjoyable and productive: leadership, responsi- bility, creativity, unity, spirit, pride and enthusiasm. Nearly every event undertaken was organized and suc- cessful. Though this required much hard work, the rewards made it worth the effort. Under the leadership of President Joe Gaudio and the guidance of Mr. Acedo, the entire student council and student body worked together to make all events successful and fun. Some of the events put on by the Ex- ecutive Board were Homecoming Week, the Thanksgiving Canned Food Drive, the Newspaper Drive, the Christmas Dance, the Magic Charlie presentation, the MDA Su- perdance, Youth Ministry Day and Spring Week. 42 Celebrating Mickey Mouse's birthday in California n Delegates: Bottom Row: Lia Sargentg Scott Henry, Joe Gaudio, Chuck Johnson, Top Carol Stevens. The National Honor Society is indeed just that - it is a national organiza- tion which recognizes and honors outstanding students in the areas of charac- ter, leadership, scholarship, and service. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.6 are eligible to be chosen as members by a faculty committee. Mrs. MeKallor replaced Sr. Laurent as moderator this year, demonstrating enthusiasm and organization, making the group's events, such as the Thanks- giving Project. the Academic Bowl, the NHS picnic, and the Induction Cere- mony very exciting and successful. For the first time, sophomores were induct- ed without first serving one year as a probationary member. President Guy Lucas, Vice President Claire Friend, Secretary Carolyn Murphy, and Trea- surer Suzanne Monthofer ended their service as officers of the society, handing their positions over to new junior leaders. The NHS seal has a special meaning to those students who belong to the National Honor Society. They have been inducted into this society with the four special qualities which are honored by many. The team was com- prised mostly of sophomores, with about half as many seniors, no ju- niors, and one freshman. Despite the difficulties the girls encountered at the start of the season, the attitude, school spirit, and dedication of these inexperienced team members paid off, as they continued to improve through the season. Their skills were clearly displayed at the Kingman game, which they won with the score of 45-34. Buckeye was one of their toughest opponents, but with other teams, such as number-one ranked Independence, they proved to be wor- thy and overpowering contenders. This game was truly an earned victo- ry, as Julie Falconer scored the win- ning point during an overtime. At the end of the season, the girls were appreciative of the valuable ex- perience they had gained, which will undoubtedly show next year. Outstanding performances were turned in by David Vaughn, who filled in for the injured Brian Hughes in the 400 relay and who was runner-up in the 300 hurdles, Michele Werton, who finished third in the 800, fourth in the l600, and broke both school records, and the girls 1600 relay of Werton, Leonore Reznick, Natalie King, and Carey Hyler, who broke that school record in finishing sixth. All State honors also went to: the 400 relay teams of Vaughn, BJ Krystek, Joe Gaudio, Paul Briehl fflndj, and Reznick, King, Karen Holland, Suzy Gilb f4thl, Krystek f2ndf200, 3rdf100Dg Briehl t2ndf400, 5thf200J, Francis Nabity f4thfl600, 32005, Suzy Gilb fschool record and 4thflow hurdlesjg Karen Lisiewski Cschool record tie and 4thfhigh jumpj, Holland f5thfhigh jumpj, Matt Ruona f5thf3200J, King f5thf200J, and James Gilb f6thfdiscusl. Head Coach Jim Relph was joined by his largest staff yet, with Assistant Coaches Rob Mitchell, Jim Relph, Jr., Tim Barnes, and Greg Moore. Valuable assistance was provided by Eileen Holland and Lisa Ford. The coaches gave out the following awards: Outstanding Redcoat - Brian Hughes and Suzy Gilb, Outstanding Field Event- James Gilb and JoAnn Yahraus, Outstanding Runner - Francis Nabity and Natalie King, Relay Award - Paul Briehl and Karen Hol- land, Most Improved - David Vaughn and Michele Werton. As the season progressed, the team grew close to each other and showed tremendous love and character. Coaches and officials across the state complimented them on their unity, charity, and drive. The biggest factor in this was un- doubtedly the leadership and example of the senior class. They made themselves and the others the best through hard work, and they grew a lot in the process. There isn't enough room to tell all about the best season in memory - about Joe's hair and the Roger and Gene act of the distance squad, or about Coach Moore's food rules and secret drills. This season was shaved heads and the best boys relays on the planet, Mummy Mountain, Wombas, Gecco-knees, Maynard, and the freshman girls, Paul saying, Am I -, or what? and the disappointment of Divisionals, the Gaudio, Krystek, and Hauser expeditions to the far reaches of civilization, practicing handoffs to Billie Jean at 80 decibels, Brian taking San Manuel by storm and Carey risking all at State, 1983 was finally being one of the best - and having fun. - Rob Mitchell Class of '80 77 'OO' ..,., k an ' i Q 4- 4 an This long-jumper leaps with force. With only one returning veteran, these girls worked hard practicing and rehears- ing their routines for camp and the following season. The work really paid off and they received many out- standing awards at camp. But, most of all, they learned how to work to- gether and continued throughout the year to carry on the Redcoat pride, with dignity and spirit. Redcoats are the best, first and nothing less. With many experienced contestants, the competition was very stiff, but ten girls, five seniors and five juniors, were finally chosen to make up the following year's line. The girls worked many long and hard hours, perfecting their routines, as the rest of the country could testify to when watching the line perform two differ- ent times at the Gerard football games that were televised on a nation- wide cable station. Through the lead- ership of captain Claire Friend, the girls learned to work together and shared each other's ideas and feel- ings. 86 Claire Friend, captain 4 Rf ? . 'F 34. , Q 4 ' . i V If ' A 4 . After the long and confusing period of try' outs, establishing the line, and the beginning of the Wrestling season, the Wrestlerettes found their line consisting of four solid and dedicated members: Theresa Cerino, Heidi Sabo, Mary England, and Susan England. Though the line was small compared to lines of previous years, the responsibility carried by the girls, especial- ly by captain Theresa Cerino, was by no means smaller, but rather greatly intensified. Theresa found herself laden with the responsibilities of a captain, as well as those of a faculty advisor, because the girls did not have a moderator. Supplying transportation for the line, snacks for the guys, and handling all the loose ends and problems, Theresa was still able to pro- mote school spirit, and she proved herself a model Wrestlerette, captain, and moderator. The Wrestlerettes remember Dysart as their favorite and most fun meet, while the Mingus meet brings back many fond and humorous memories. The Wrestlerettes are to be com- mended forthe work they so unselfishly devot- ed themselves to, and their ability to work to- gether to accomplish what usually takes ten girls. I would like to thank those people who contributed to the making ofthis book, without whom the memories and feelings captured here would not have been possible. I would like to thank the many people who donated pictures when they were needed: Dr. Brandt, Mr. Acedo, Mr. and Mrs. Pina, Duke Photography, Gaines Duvall, Adam Chwalik, Susan Fin- nerty, Rodi Vehr, Lara Rodriguez, Beth Eagan, Annette Surdyk, Lia Sargent, Janet Watson, Chris Hansen, Regina Vasquez, and Carol Mitchell. I would also like to thank Lara Rodriguez and Rodi Vehr who designed the pages dedicated to Andrea Pina, the staff, and Mr. Miller, who was always patient and dedicated to serving the school as yearbook moderator. The footprints left behind by the Gerard community during the 1982-83 school year reflect the unity and enthusiasm of the student body and especially that of the senior class. This yearbook captures those memories, allowing us to look back on that year as we would footprints in the sand. I hope that when you look through the pages of this yearbook you will remember the Footprints poem on the first page, and be able to recognize those times during the year when the Lord carried you and the student body could be seen walking side by side. Sincerely, Suzanne Monthofer
