The Foreign Language Department tries to first of all help the students acquire an accurate working knowledge of the language. Language students also study the culture, customs, and ways of life of the people whose language they are studying. By the thorough education they receive, they are able to gain a better understanding of their own language and culture. They do this not only by means of education in a classroom, but also in extra activities. The fourth year Spanish Class not only has cooking parties, Christmas Caroling, and the annual Spanish Play, but also are involved in the Spanish Mass that is celebrated each year in commemoration of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This year the whole school at- tended. Another outing they had was their trip to Puerto Vallarta. Here the students received first- hand information. They not only had fun lying on the beach, but were also able to see their churches and other cultural attractions. Another thing they did while they were there was to go on a cruise for an afternoon. While doing all this they were able to meet new people and practice their language with them. This was all very worthwhile, because, as you know, it is no good to know a language if you are not able to speak it with others.
