This was a joyous occasion. It started off with a Mass on the field celebrated by His Excellency Bishop O'Brien. After the Mass and during the course of the afternoon special prefor- mances by the Drama Club, Band, Advanced Spanish and Pom and Cheer were held. Various booths and exhibits around the school included the Science Department, Year- book, Newspaper and the Chess Club, Balloons were passed out by Drama members. A lot of hard work and careful planning went into the Anniversary celebration - from the clean up efforts of the Juniors to the detailed decoration of the refreshment table by the Mothers' Club. This event was a complete success, and we look forward to the next twenty years. ' rn 28 'L 7 'FQ G . - 'vazszz'-ff-sy N .x V 1. air-fi WW! .fas,u.y ., S. ' .L -f 9 ,ah 'W it 'lf' 5. . As I stand at todayas door, I'm looking out as you look in, I have so much to tell you. As the door slowly inches shut, I'm rushed for words to say. So many memories race through my mind. The times we've shared. We've shared so many dreams. We became friends in such a short time, too short of time. I have so much to tell you, But the door doesnit permit it as it gets closer to the latch. I'm at a loss for words. I have so many feelings to express. I can say only a little of what I feel. Why have I waited so long? Why didn't I tell you sooner, before I was rushed for time? The door softly closes and locks us apart forever. As I stand there, looking at the dark emptiness of the door, I wonder, did you know how I felt? Did you know that I loved you? by Karen Runninger and Dorothy Paytas X a- S. IZ .i . , Nl 4 S 55. A ,5 E554 Q - QI bull' The Religion Department is using new learning techniques to teach students about their religious beliefs. It also tries to strengthen them to face their life ahead. During the year there are Masses attended by each Religion class once a week. This is done to stress not only the importance of the Mass, but also the importance of devoting time teh God. Students also get involved through Christian Service. Christian Service is a graduation requirement. Each student needs to have a certain number of hours every year. Through this they give of their time and talents. 39 M ath and ..................................... . .Q , v. ., , , is i l. This is not a laughing matter. i 2. Now,whu1 urcyou doing? The Foreign Language Department tries to first of all help the students acquire an accurate working knowledge of the language. Language students also study the culture, customs, and ways of life of the people whose language they are studying. By the thorough education they receive, they are able to gain a better understanding of their own language and culture. They do this not only by means of education in a classroom, but also in extra activities. The fourth year Spanish Class not only has cooking parties, Christmas Caroling, and the annual Spanish Play, but also are involved in the Spanish Mass that is celebrated each year in commemoration of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This year the whole school at- tended. Another outing they had was their trip to Puerto Vallarta. Here the students received first- hand information. They not only had fun lying on the beach, but were also able to see their churches and other cultural attractions. Another thing they did while they were there was to go on a cruise for an afternoon. While doing all this they were able to meet new people and practice their language with them. This was all very worthwhile, because, as you know, it is no good to know a language if you are not able to speak it with others. I i i-R K Time Out! A Learning through osmosis. I think we've got it now fellas. Thanks. If they could see me now! Concentration isn't always easy . mf. tl iw X E GLISH There are three years of history classes required here at Gerard. Sophomore year Arizona History and World Ge- ography and Junior year American History are studied. Finally, in the Senior year the students learn about Ameri- can Government, Economics and Free Enterprise. It is said that history repeats itself. Therefore, it is very ' important to study what has happened in the past so that the bad times may be prevented in the future. English classes cover just about everything from basic grammar and puntuation to term papers and book reports. They give students the opportunity not only to learn the basics, but also to develop their own individual interests and talents. .. 'W Don't take it so seriously, guys. Business courses are also of- fered. Although they can be a lot of work, the rewards are great. Learning business skills gives a 5 person a feeling of confidence and 5 r independence. They prepare him for every day things like balancing a checkbook. It may also help in other classes where typing papers is required. ,I in-an--V , 5 ,fu-rf s 3'- lf you listened the first time, you would know what to do. The choir this year was also small, but, there was a lot of individual talent. This was appar- ent by the quality of their public perfor- mances. The Art Department and Home Economics classes contributed their part in developing other skills in Gerard students. Art is a spe- cialty field where innate talent can be trained and disciplined. Home Economics students learn first hand that what moms make look so easy has its difficult moments! , Here at Gerard there are many talents. The Fine Arts Department is in the business of developing these. Examples of good sports- manship and school spirit are lead by those who are out in front, but they are radiated by the people behind the scenes. The Band and Choir are parts of this de- partment that are out in front. Their example is radiated by the student body. It is in classes like Art and Home Economics that this spirit is developed and enhanced. This is what makes Gerard the great school it is. Look! The main purpose is to help each person develop all his inborn abilities to the fullest. It also helps them to look and feel better about themselves. This years' Physical Education classes have offered a variety of different activities. Throughout the year students have partici- pated in football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, gymnastics, weight lifting, track, baseball and even aerobics. The students who participated in these not only learned a lot, but they also had a lot of fun. Another achievement which helped aid in making P.E. more enjoyable was the new locker rooms. These provided quicker and more convenient means of changing and getting-ready for the next class. 49 VVV'Y OH SHINING KNIGHT His shining armor, now battered and rusty, His white horse, now dull and gray, That mighty steed, so fearless and trusty, Became spooked and threw him astray. This year's Varsity Volleyball Team finished with a record of 8-7 for the year in their matches and in third place in the division standings. The girls worked hard all season and made a great deal of improvement as they progressed. Out- standing team performances were turned in against division opponents, Gilbert and Corona del Sol, resulting in impressive victories over those two teams. Receiving recognition for their perfor- mance during the season were Carey Hyler, Bridgette Moya and Denise Cal- cagno, who were voted to the Second Team All-Division Squad by the Confer- ence Coaches. Even though they lost in double overtime in the games against Mingus and Globe, they made the opposing teams work for their wins. The team also had a special closeness and each looked out for the other. Throughout the season, they helped each other to try and reach their full potential. The team was coached by Jan Dreffs, who stat- ed that the team hustled and worked hard all year. With only three seniors fDenise Cal- cagno, Donna Baker, and Debbie DeJu- liaj, the team lacked the proper exper- ience to be a dominating force in a very tough conference. With all these factors forced upon them, the girls seemed to draw a little closer together. Gerard can be proud of the determi- nation that the girls showed during each one of the games. This determination was evident in the progress that was at- tained as the year came to a close. In the last two weeks, the Varsity 'Coats beat Globe in an away game and Bourgade at home. The Globe game was a big one because we had never beaten the Tigers at Globe in the last five years. The victories over Glove and Bour- gade were a twist in faith because we tied for third, which placed us in the same category as Mingus, the number one team. In the first round of the Divi- sionals, the 'Coats played Globe in a tre- mendous battle in which two overtimes were taken before the Tigers from Globe defeated Gerard. Each member was hard-working, active and dedicated. The various class officers worked together to plan and raise money for events such as the 20th Anniversary Celebration, Prom, Coronation, Homecoming, Anytown, Girl's State, Boy's State and the Senior Brunch. Although each class sponsored indi- vidual activities, the rest of the student body, through the guidance of their officers, co-op- erated and responded, making each event a success. The good example ofthe unity in Stu- dent Council helped increase the unity of Ge- rard as a whole. It was a great year! The Backpacking Club has gone on three trips this year. Led by Mr. McGe- hee, the club went to Pine Mountain in the fall. Later in the winter, it went to the Superstitions. Mr. lVlcGehee then left Gerard to work for the Arizona Game and Fish Department. Mr. Acedo then led part of the group to Oak Creek Canyon. The club really got back to na- ture and had a very enjoyable year under the leadership of president, Tom Suriano and vice-president, Gary Peloso. 96 2 6 IJ The packers are all set and ready to go at Pine Mountain Wilderness. 21 They're off! 35 At the top of Pine Mountain, the group signs their name, adding to the elite group who had already as- cended this perilous mountain. 41 Front Row: Bonnie Johnson, Dan Latin, Julie Hen- zerling, Matt McAward, Cheryl Vandenburgg Second Row: Tim Murphy, Matt Curtis, George Fleming, Ja- net Watson, Mark Sedalackezk, Chuck Johnson, Mr. Ascedog Back Row: John Reznick, Joe Spets, Chuck Kruezer, Clayton Geenen, Gary Peloso. Since there aren't any Journalism classes offered at Gerard, all work done on the paper is done outside the regular school schedule. The staff is composed of stu- dents from all four grades. Un- der the guidance ofthe hard-working officers - president, Laura Petrola, vice-president, Sue Si- kora, secretary, Jim Relph, treasurer, Nancy Richardson and moderator, Mr. Henry Acedo a plus the hard-working members, Drama Club put on a M 8: M sale which made over 550000, the Bun-O-Gram sale at Easter which made 5113.00 and put on a first rate production of g'You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown, which was directed by an alumnus, Matt Otayiano. Drama is the only place you can ham it up, make someone else happy, and still be yourself, says Jim Relph. Drama Club had a very good year and will have an even better one next year. t: --' M' vb 1--f Yearbook Staff Works Hard to Keep Memorzes Alzve It took a lot of effort and talent to make this year's IMAGE a first rate book. Moderated by Mr. Andorfer and guided by editor Beth Johnson, the yearbook staff tried to accomplish every duty that goes into producing a yearbook. There were deadlines that needed to be met, pictures that had to be taken, and layouts which needed to be drawn up. The staff had to make many sacrifices which included staying after school each day and coming in on holidays. There was a lot of work to be done and not many people to do it. The small staff this year had a responsibility to produce a book that would represent Gerard and keep memories alive. 108 3 I ,mea-,aw Top, left to right: Chuck Johnson, Beth Johnson, Linda Ball, Bottom: Mary Johnson, Kathy Bilinski, Erin Adams, Patty DeJulia, Lynn Ehmann. l. The 1981-82 school year proved to be a blossoming one for the rela- tionship between Gerard Catholic and Bishop Thomas J. O'Brien. Faculty member Fr. John Ebbesmier along with Ted Burr, John Mudd, Mike Dearing attend- ed the Bishop's ordination in Rome, where they received an au- dience with Pope John Paul II. Eight Gerard sophomores worked long hours setting up for the Bishop's installation at the ASU Activity Center in January. They, along with Mr. Henry Acedo, were rewarded for their ef- forts by a luncheon sponsored by Bishop O'Brien. The Bishop honored Gerard by saying mass on St. Patrick's Day. This was his first visit to a diocesan high school. During his sermon, he proclaimed that faith is really no good unless we work at it. Finally, our 20th Anniversary celebration was also blessed by Bishop O'Brien, who showed the Redcoats his continued interest. r l Be proud of the fact that we are Christians . . . No doubt as you reflect on this past year at Gerard there will be various memories brought to your mind. But what will always be among your best memories are those in which you cared and shared yourself with others. We are reminded of Jesus, the One who cared and shared Himself with us.
