76 J.V. Cheer Prepares for Varsity Captain, Judy England Practice, practice, and more practice. It's a year-round terrr for the J.V. Cheer line. Starting at the beginning of the sum mer, the newly chosen squad works together every day of the week to become a line, and to perfect their cheers for camp At camp they learn new cheers and chants, and basic cheer leading methods. They not only learn about cheering, but also about how to get along with each other and how to work to gether. Judy England J.V. cheer captain, expressed this, It's no easy working with the same girls every day for a whole year but, as we get to know each other, we each learn to give a little and accept each other, and that makes it all worth while.' The J.V. Cheer line not only practiced for camp but it's owr games. For when Homecoming and State playoffs rollei around, they could be seen practicing every day with th Varsity line to get ready for the big game on Friday night. J.V. cheer was important to me because it was fun and I liken helping raise the spirit at Gerard. Lia Sargent Girls prepare for their last day at N.A.U. J.V. waiting to do cheer. 78 Varsity Pom Brings The Spirit Out Early in the Spring of 1980 several girls tried out for the Varsity Pom Line. Ten bright and spirited girls were chosen, nine of which are Seniors. The new line started out with a first place ribbon at pom and cheer camp, and also received various awards. Proof of the new line's talent was seen early in the year as they made their debut at the football games and pep rallies. Their talent and coordination came through as they entertained the crowds during halftime with their unique routines. The peppy Varsity line worked long and hard to make sure everything turned out just right. I really enjoyed being on the Varsity Pom Line. lt's a lot of hard work, but when the other girls are so great to work with, it makes it really special. Alana Getz Led by Karen Mackey, the line perfected their routine and made the halftime more enjoyable. As the buzzer of the last game sounded, the tears started to roll down their cheeks as they realized that this would be their last time together as a line.
