Not knowing each other or each others many talents made it diffi- cult at first. As the weeks went by the boys started to come together as a team, which showed in their team spirit and willingness to learn. The team had a lot of potential, along with good size and fast boys which should be a good asset for the upcoming years. For all the time and hard work that we put in we all learned you can't win football games unless you play like a team. George Brennan Tom Slauterbeck leads his team. Now she's a Herman Josephs. Football members were a young and very inexperienced group as they numbered 18 for the season. The players worked hard all year, but lack of depth and running speed hurt the team. In every game except for two, Gerard had a chance to win. Hopefully, for next year, this year's experience will help the players in contrib- uting to the Varsity. All 18 contributed in certain ways to make it an enjoyable year. 14 Apache Junction 12 6 Cactus 13 6 Peoria 22 34 Independence 19 8 Mingus 6 0 Gilbert 18 24 Bourgade 6 0 Corona del Sol 28 J.V. The 1980 Gerard Cross-Country team enjoyed a season of both success and frustration. Early in September the harriers tangled with a very deep and tal- ented Mingus High School team. It was a humbling and yet informative experi- ence. Soundly defeated they pulled their socks up and decided to do the best they could regardless of the youth and lack of depth. For the remainder of the season, Gerard battled teams which were three for four times bigger than they but never flenched or complained. Workouts were often bordered on the brutal, but few were the complaints of the team. They seemed to understand that at Gerard they must make up in courage and quality what we sometimes lackin facilities and numbers. And so the team developed: Dan Hosford as the premier runner, a seniorg Francis Nabity, a tough, gritty freshmang Matt Ruona the Flying Finn, also a freshman, Glenn Mikalajczk, a junior as rugged as the spelling of his name, and Steve Flynn, another junior as steady as a rock. Rounding out the team and contributing in many important ways were Joe Elardo, Mike Mastro, Tim Cahill, and Rick Conchos, with Leigh Parsons serv- ing as the responsible manager so necessary to a teams success. Next year returns the entire team, minus of course, Dan Hosford, the lone senior. Come and see the team win in 1981! Glenn Mikolajczyk runs courageously
