Our students have shown their pride when it counts. Whenever people were called on because of necessity, they lived up to their responsi- bilities. Early in Gerard's history, when it was scarcely known beyond its student body, a particularly inspiring event occurred: A local radio station was having a contest. To win the contest for your high school, you were to write the name of your high school on a piece of paper and send it in. The seniors here de- cided that Gerard would win that contest and organized a drive for getting people to write down Gerard on pieces of paper. When they announced the winner, Gerard had about ten times as many responses as even the larger schools, enough to fill a truck. lt's this feeling, the feeling that everyone can contribute, that dominates here at Gerard. Everyone cares. The students, teachers, athletes, even the parents and graduates care, not just about the school, but about each other. The school promotes this close knit feeling by sponsoring a steak fry for parents of freshman and new students each year. The newest addition to Gerard, the new locker rooms, is a testimony to Red- coat Pride all by itself. Parents and teachers worked on what they could, painting, etc., on weekends. They didn't have to be there, but they were. The best way, it seems, to describe the way the majority of us here at Gerard feel our pride is how a faculty member here, Mr. Fielph, said it, lt's caring enough to give up, endure, give up our selfishness for the good of everyone. If pride in oneself means self-acceptance for what God has made us and for what we are capable of achieving as a consequence, it is simultaneously an act of thanksgiving and the acceptance of a challenge.
