Mr. Austin is a new face on campus. The English teachers at Gerard contribute more than just their knowledge of grammar and literature. The seniors are lucky to have for their class moderator, Miss Kathy Ko- chevar Cbetter known as Miss Kayj. Miss Kay's open and friendly personality make her a fa- vorite among the students. Miss Kay is also in- volved with the Four Wheelers Club. Fr. Lukan, a new addition to the Gerard staff, is in charge of the school newspaper, the Unionjaok. lt is a treasure of the students and we owe much gratitude to Fr. Lukan for devot- ing so much in producing such a fine school newspaper. Mr. Jim Ftelph aids the school greatly by coaching the freshman football team, the track team, and running a weight training and condi- tioning program. One really doubts that any ju- nior will forget the book reports and term pa- pers Mr. Relph assigns to help his students get a taste of the demanding work in college. The cross country team is honored this year with a coach who is another newcomer to the Gerard family. Mr. Allen Austin applies himself to the challenge of producing a top ranked cross country team. Mr. Austin is also assist- ing Mr. Relph with the track team. Mr. Roy Burcham teaches freshmen the proper way to read and write the English lan- guage. Mr. Burcham is seen after school coaching the girls' volleyball team, and also the frosh boys basketball team. The English Department at Gerard is pleased to have two teachers from the Phoenix Union High School System. Miss Susan Muntz teaches Title l Reading. Mrs. Marge Anderson teaches Title I English. Language Teache f .l Mr. Flelph aids Judy England with a difficult English assignment. Fr. Lukan is a new faculty staff member. Tom Briehl and Larry Zieser are always willing to lift Miss Kay's spirit.

Y 1 - W l :item Q1-f,.m:w':..,,1..1,. f.., . , fr.. -fsv.N,w-,gamer There's something missing here! Mathematics is the study of quantities and re- lations through the use of numbers and sym- bols. The different fields of math offered at Ge- rard are Title I, Essentials of Math, Introduction to Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II! Triginometry, Algebra ll, Geometry, Tri- ginometry!Analytic Geometry, and Calculus. The department includes Sr. Laurent Nugent, who is the chairman, Mr. Richard Curran, Miss Susan Johnson, and Mr. Gary Andorfer. The new Title I teacher is Mr. Mark Scalesi. Sr. Laurent teaches Algebra IA, IIB, Triginometry! Analytic Geometry and Calculus. Mr. Curran teaches Algebra IB, IIA, and Geom- etry fRemember always two things-Bisector Man and Mr. Graphy. A new member of the Math Department this year is Miss Jonnson. She teaches a variety of classes-Essentials of Math and Algebra IA, B, and C. She is also the Junior Varsity coach for girls' basketball.

Marguerite Berges and Anita Labra instruct stu- dents in the use of the Spanish language. These two faculty members do not limit their teaching to the classroom, each year Mrs. Labra and Mrs. Ber- ges courageously take third and fourth year Span- ish students to Mazatlan. Mrs. Labra is the freshman class moderator. She devotes much of her time to the freshmen and is an invaluable aid and inspiration to them. Mrs. Labra is in charge of teaching first and fourth year Spanish students. Mrs. Berges faces the challenge of orgalnizing the annual Europe Trip. She has successfully arranged these educational trips for students for several years. Mrs. Berges teaches the second and third year Spanish students. She is a volunteer at Scotts- dale Memorial Hospital after school. This care for people is evident in her teaching.
