Spirit Leaders Percolate uv ' ' I -M Spirit, pride and unity could de- scribe the qualities of the 1978-79 varsity cheer line. Mentally and physically the girls worked together to become close and understanding of each other. The summer started if early as they perfected the cheers that were to be performed at pom and cheer camp in Thatcher, Arizona. At camp they also learned new cheers, chants and spirit raising ideas, and engaged in group rap sessions that helped each squad become closer. Gerard brought back nza ny blue ribbons and enthusi- astically won the spirit award. An important part of working with any group is getting along with the other members. The girls worked to get to know each other better by having group talks which gave every- one the chance to settle any differ- ences. Once everyone had finished crying, practice could resume. 78 S-, -.1 A new thing this year that helped the cheer line out was having all the girls take advanced P.E. seventh pe- riod. This allowed more time for practice, poster-painting, work or other school activities. The cheer line also participated in a study of the abuse typ vocal chords during cheerleading. The study took place at Arizona State University. A great help to the pom and cheer was their moderator Mrs. Dertina. She attended camp with them and oversaw all their activities. Captain Mary Ann Gallagher ex- pressed this, Our cheer line is very close. Everybody is funny in their own little way. We are a very emo- tional groupg we love to cry! One of our good qualities is we all really like each other-all eight Qfus. We started out as eight individual cheerleaders, but we ended up as a team. the Fans
