Mass Suicide Uutsidc Tuba City The jbllowing, is a fictional ac- count fy' the ski trip to Purgatory. It was writternttllbylone of the Ski Club inenibers. 'Forty young Phoenicians and their honorable leaders Jerry Stone and Mutha Stevens took their lives in the niorningl hours after a series of incidents. Tuba City officials reported the trouble began while heading for Purgatory, Colorado early Satur- day 'morning when one of the buses in the caravan collided with a snow bank, another vehicle got lost and was detoured for two hours. The third vehicle was stranded on an icy inountain where several of the travelers occupied themselves constructively. Other incidents consisted of having to pile out and push the bus up an ice covered hill, being pulled 2 . V by a snow plow, having the bus bathroonz overflow, burning out the clutch, getting a flat tire, hav- ing the van tip over on its side, and-Hnally the real killer ffbeing stuck in Tuba City for rnore than y 'ive hours a ter which thei in- , Y dulged in the poisonous solution. A suicide note was left to an unidentified 'Did Vince and it read as follows: I-Ieyf Dr. Vince, during the luggage check you jor- got to see if we had snow chains. We had everything but. We just cannot go on any longer. We have 1 S Q S all gone insane from the Nava- Hopi Cate and the Tuba City High School just wasn't our idea of a fun time. See ya soon-God will getcha for th is. The so-called Dr. Vince has not been located and anybody with a possible clue to this nzan's iden- tity please contact the bus corn- pany, They have offered to take hirn on a tour of the U.S. at no charge. They claini to have a very reputable bus line for getting people to where they want to go fgetting back is another storyjf'

H Fosters Valuable Qualities The National Honor Society is in- deed just thatg it is a national orga- nization which recognizes and honors outstanding students in the areas of character, leadership, scholarship and service. This year the society has tried to uphold all of these qualities by en- couraging the members to keep good grades and become involved in some sort of community or school service. This may be tutoring a younger stu- dent or volunteering to work with handicapped children. Money which the NHS makes through various sales or by selling concessions at the gun show may go to support projects such as a scholar- ship fund for an incoming Gerard freshman, or used to finance an ac- tivity planned by one Qf the NHS committees. In order to get members more in- volved, the club was divided into four committees. The four committees are the social committee, the field-trip committee, the service committee, and the special committee. When meetings arise every first Tuesday of the month, members divide up into their committees and plan projects for the whole group. The Juniors and Seniors who be- long to NHS have many rewards. One presentation which they enjoyed was a visit from a Devil's Advocate from Arizona State University who came to speak to those NHS members interested in college life. The NHS seal has a special mean- ing to those students who belong to the National Honor Society. They have been inducted into this society because of their character, scholar- ship, leadership and service. With these qualities being honored and promoted, the members will hold strong values long after they gradu- ate from Gerard. 1 102 2 NATION I. SOCIETY
