Gerard had its an- nual costume contest where students and .faculty alike had their chance to ham it up as they displayed their creativity by wearing their original costumes to school. Costumes ranged from scary to humorous with a lot of imagination either way, but unfartu- nately only two winners could be chosen. They were Renee Stallard's giant chicken and Dale Scuderi as Frankenstein. Upperclassmen were given the op- portunity to set their sights into the future as they attend the second an- nual Post High School Education Visitation Day. 53 different colleges, primarily fy' the Southwest, had rep- resentatives attend. Students were given the opportunity to collect pam- phlets and discuss subjects con- cerning jhnancial aid, school size, and admission procedures with the representatives. With the onset of November, the guys crossed their fingers with an- ticipation as the girls picked their favorite honey to take to the Sadie Hawkins Hoedown. The Sophomores planned the dance, so it was a tre- mendous success. The traditional Tliannksgiving fes- tivities had something to qgvrafmd ev- eryone. Students got a chance to kick back and relax at the annual Powde Puff game and picnic. The Fresh! Junior team played a sensational game as they creamed the Soph- omores and the Seniors. The arrival of the annual Cheese Drive sparked the ambitions if the students as all four classes compete i to see who could sell the most cheese. While students were looking forward to the joys of the holi- day season, they were bombarded with last minute homework to wrap up the semester and were faced with the prospect of upcoming finals. Meanwhile, basketball season started of with a bang as the Red- coats embarked on their usual win- ning streak, and fans supported them with all the spirit they could muster. The Junior class also spon- sored a terrific Christmas dance which was casualfsingles, a theme which was the choice of a student body vote. Before they had a chance to recu- perate from New Years, the student body was welcomed back to school from an eventful vacation. With their New Year's resolutions in mind, students put themselves in a positive frame of mind as they faced a new and challenging semester. Can anyone think of anything bet- ter to do in the dead ofwinter than go skiing? That's what a group of Ski Club members had in mind as they embarked on the annual ski trip to Purgatory, Colorado. The group went by buses and vans and spent three days hitting the slopes. Despite a number of transportation conflicts, the trip was a tremendous success and everyone had a great time. Due to the bas- ketball game against arch-rival Bourgade that was scheduled during Sweetheart week, Student Council decided to plan something special. The Sweetheart activities were to take on the format of Homecoming, with a funfilled spirit week preced- ing the night of the game and dance. All week long, each class decked out the school with posters, decorations, etc. according to a' chosen theme on their given day. Each class put forth a lot of pride and ejlort, but the Ju- niors edged out the rest as they put on the winning spirit day. On the Friday of the game, the whole school united to show their Redcoats that they're behind them all the way. The conclusion of spirit week was topped off with a Student Council balloon sale and a pep rally. On the night of the game, the Red- coats showed the Bourgade Eagles what pride was all about. As usual, they played a first-rate game and wrapped it up with a dazzling 81-72 win. The icing on the cake was the Sweetheart dance held directly after the game. Put on by the Seniors, it was set in a more casual mood as it was a singles dance as opposed to the crruples tradition. The climax of the evening was when the twelve outstanding Juniors nominated anxiously awaited the crowning of the Sweetheart royalty. The candidates for King were: David Bresnahan, James Gourley, Mike Henry, Louis Rodriguez, Dan Smith, and Chuck Wahlheim. The Queen nominees were: Jean Ajamie, Angela Ashford, Marty Glenn, Terri Hen- zerling, Beth Sack, and Marianne Vandenberg. Although it was a dijfi- cult choice, Terri Henzerling and Dan Smith were voted by the student body as Sweetheart King and Queen. 24 5 5 ag Q' Q s M Q 2 Q . 4, wx? Mentally and physically the girls worked together to become close and understanding of each other. The summer started if early as they perfected the cheers that were to be performed at pom and cheer camp in Thatcher, Arizona. At camp they also learned new cheers, chants and spirit raising ideas, and engaged in group rap sessions that helped each squad become closer. Gerard brought back nza ny blue ribbons and enthusi- astically won the spirit award. An important part of working with any group is getting along with the other members. The girls worked to get to know each other better by having group talks which gave every- one the chance to settle any differ- ences. Once everyone had finished crying, practice could resume. 78 S-, -.1 A new thing this year that helped the cheer line out was having all the girls take advanced P.E. seventh pe- riod. This allowed more time for practice, poster-painting, work or other school activities. The cheer line also participated in a study of the abuse typ vocal chords during cheerleading. The study took place at Arizona State University. A great help to the pom and cheer was their moderator Mrs. Dertina. She attended camp with them and oversaw all their activities. Captain Mary Ann Gallagher ex- pressed this, Our cheer line is very close. Everybody is funny in their own little way. We are a very emo- tional groupg we love to cry! Tuba City officials reported the trouble began while heading for Purgatory, Colorado early Satur- day 'morning when one of the buses in the caravan collided with a snow bank, another vehicle got lost and was detoured for two hours. The third vehicle was stranded on an icy inountain where several of the travelers occupied themselves constructively. Other incidents consisted of having to pile out and push the bus up an ice covered hill, being pulled 2 . This year the society has tried to uphold all of these qualities by en- couraging the members to keep good grades and become involved in some sort of community or school service. This may be tutoring a younger stu- dent or volunteering to work with handicapped children. Money which the NHS makes through various sales or by selling concessions at the gun show may go to support projects such as a scholar- ship fund for an incoming Gerard freshman, or used to finance an ac- tivity planned by one Qf the NHS committees. In order to get members more in- volved, the club was divided into four committees. The four committees are the social committee, the field-trip committee, the service committee, and the special committee. When meetings arise every first Tuesday of the month, members divide up into their committees and plan projects for the whole group. The Juniors and Seniors who be- long to NHS have many rewards. One presentation which they enjoyed was a visit from a Devil's Advocate from Arizona State University who came to speak to those NHS members interested in college life. The NHS seal has a special mean- ing to those students who belong to the National Honor Society. They have been inducted into this society because of their character, scholar- ship, leadership and service. With these qualities being honored and promoted, the members will hold strong values long after they gradu- ate from Gerard. 1 102 2 NATION I. Gerard is proud to have these high achievers who represent some of the best qualities a student could have. Our school seal symbolizes the bas- ics of Gerard. It reflects the pride which we havejbr ourselves and those around us. The Dove of Peace is a symbollfor peace and the Holy Spirit. Thefleur de lis is a French emblem representing the French missionary, Monsignor Gerard, fir whom our school fs named. The lion represents strength and the book it is holding represents knowledge. Together they Sllglliflf the strength of knowledge. The Latin inscription translates into It is the spirit that gives life. These are all simple emblems of our school, yet they portray the character gearedjbr all Gerard students. A high honor and important part ofhigh school life is to be well liked by others. Twelve sweet Juniors were nominated for Sweetheart King and Queen by their class. The whole school then elects the king and queen. This year's King and Queen were Dan Smith and Terri Henzerling. Senior Kathy Scholz represented Gerard in a scholarship contest spon- sored by Gemco. Kathy succeeded as one of the ten finalists in an oral dis- cussion on economics. Mary Briehl and Diane Dupey were two National Honor Society members who were chosen by the club to apply for a NHS scholarship grant to the college of their choice. The ap- plication required their scholastic, leadership and service abilities. The number one and number two ranked people in each class are also deserving of recognition. Many of these top students are also involved in extra curricular activities. The Bausch Kc Lomb award, which goes to the outstanding senior science student was awarded to Dave Dippre. Along with an inscribed medal, Dave received a scholarship application to the University of Rochester in New York where the 1 What is the DAR Good Citizens Contest?
